...A critique of “Into the unknown” published by the economist (November 13, 2004.) Fear of losing jobs to offshoring (rise in unemployment), but computers and technology may take these jobs anyway. “Has the machines in its last furious manifestation begun to eliminate workers faster than new task can be found for them?” Article says not to worry. The United States has experienced an increase in the offshore outsourcing (offshoring) of jobs in the service industry. Although offshoring is common in the manufacturing industry, it only recently began in the service industry. The recent increase in the service industry has occurred because of new technology and the ability to access information from anywhere. Those who oppose offshoring believe it takes away American jobs, lower wages, and causes declines in America’s standard of living and any benefits from offshoring are unevenly distributed. Offshoring in the industry has not negatively affected the United States. Currently, offshore outsourcing in the service industry has a net benefit to society and there is no reason for concern. Critics charge that the information revolution (especially the Internet) has accelerated the decimation of U.S. manufacturing and facilitated the outsourcing of service sector jobs once considered safe, from backroom call centers to high level software programming. (This concern feeds into the suspicion that U.S. corporations are exploiting globalization to fatten profits at the expense of workers.)...

...You’re running through a vast field that’s filled with wheat as tall as you. Suddenly a clif appears before you. Unable to stop you feel yourself falling to your inevitable death. Closer and closer. Feet from the ground, you immediately stop. You have found that you have landed on a soft cloud. You relax into a deep serenity as the cloud soars up and floats through the sky. No longer is there a threat of death, but a land of tranquility as you drift off into the sunset for your next adventure. Unfortunately, the world in which we currently live could not provide the same experience that was just described. As humans, we are limited in our perception and our senses. But, the world is evolving and technology is starting to fill the void created...

...behavior to improve personal, job, and career effectiveness. (DuBrin) Employees must frequently work together on projects, communicate ideas and provide motivation to get things done. Developing good human relations skills adds to the organizational effectiveness of a business. Employers that challenge and engage their employees are more likely to retain and attract qualified talent and adapt to meet the needs of a changing marketplace. Human relations begin with self-understanding. This concept can be divided into two sides: public self and private self. The public self is how a person wants the outside world to see them, while the private self is how a person really is. To get an understanding of self you need to consider six sources of information. General information about human behavior, informal feedback from people, feedback from superiors, feedback from coworkers, feedback from self-assessment quizzes, and the Johari window. While the first five sources are self-explanatory, the last one may not be familiar. The Johari window is a grid showing how much information you know about yourself as well as how much other people know about you. It is divided into four regions: what is known by the person about him/herself and is also known by others (free area), what is unknown by the person about him/herself but which others know (blind area), what the person knows about him/herself that others do not know (hidden area), and what is unknown by the person about him/herself...

...Rancho Solano Preparatory School: Proposed Change for a Better Future Traditionally it is believed that you can get a better education from private school rather than public school. Private schools are smaller therefore have a better flow of communication within their network of faculty, parents, and students. Back in 2014, the Rancho Solano Preparatory School (RSPS) went about some drastic changes that affected the school board, students, teachers, and parents. Providing students private education for over sixty years, RSPS has been well established within the community. Parents and students used to look forward to attending RSPS because of how prestigious it was and the school’s well known history. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. There is no law against people who make poor decisions and the past cannot be changed, however mistakes can be learned from to make way for a better future. A change within the school board subsystem of RSPS would make room for better information flow, a better workforce structure, and for other subsystems already in place to run more efficiently. The major organizational subsystem that needs to be changes at RSPS is the school board members. On January 6, 2014, Dr. Audrey Mernard (head of RSPS) announced to her staff that they would be closing campuses in Peoria and Gilbert (Illinois) due to a “strategic direction” that is best for RSPS (Moore, 2014). This was the only explanation given to the faculty and there was no debate...

...disappointment because they feel he won’t be able to bring the change the country needs. To me and many others President Obama is a great leader and is growing into a greater one. He focuses on the issues our country has as a whole such as the economy, education and health care. I believe that Obama has a great plan for all of the issues at hand, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions. When it comes to the economy President Obama inherited a terrible mess when he came into political office; a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit, two wars, rising unemployment and unprecedented crises in our banking system. The Obama Administration has worked overtime to address our immediate problems of rising unemployment, falling home prices and limping credit markets, while taking a longer view in laying a strong foundation for future economic growth that benefits all Americans. To get the economy back on track President Obama signed legislation to jumpstart our economy, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, less than a month after his inauguration. The plan will save or create 3.5 million new jobs, make critical investments in our infrastructure and give 95 percent of working Americans a tax cut. There are many people who are appreciative of what President Obama and his Administration are doing to help our economy get back on the right path and then there are those who disagree. Education has been a problem in the United States for a long time high dropout rates and not farthing education...

...monitoring. The reason for choosing this topic is for personal understanding on how much UNIX performance monitoring differs from the monitoring of Windows based computers. This research paper is not to compare the two systems but to gain an understanding of how UNIX monitors performance. I don’t have any personal experience with working with UNIX systems, but as always eager to gain insight of different operating systems. The first thing I would like to discover is some of the common performance problems encountered caused by software, hardware and the combination of the two, the different terminologies associated with the processes via hardware or software, and finally what different utilities are used for monitoring these problems. We all know that UNIX has been around since the early 1970’s and the developments of performance tools have been around for a long time to enable system administrators in tuning systems for optimal performance. Operating systems performance problems normally involves process management, memory management, and scheduling. The object of performance on UNIX based systems is to determine the amount of time the operating system spends during scheduling and the amount of time for applications to run (Unknown, 2003). Windows based systems establish an appropriate ration between time in application mode and time in system mode (Unknown, 2003). I will get more into UNIX based systems and how these monitoring tools are used to keep our UNIX based system...

...The Relationship between Privet and Public Police William Propst CJS/ 250 12/08/2013 Michael Crumpler The Relationship between Privet and Public Police When it comes down to it both privet and public police are important to society as a whole. They are both provided security and protection, whether it’s to a company or to the public at large. They are also both responsible for deterring crime in their own areas. Now the relationship between the two has been the topic of a lot of discussions over the years, some good but mostly it is viewed in a negative light. These are some of the topics that I will be looking into farther in this paper. As law enforcement agencies are charge with protecting the public, you could say that they focus more on arrest then they do on preventing the crime from happening in the first place. This would be wrong. After taking my policing class I know that there are models set in place that are for preventing crime as well as arresting criminals. Now we have to keep in mind that there are three different levels to law enforcement agencies. They range from local counties all the way up to state and federal levels. Communities are dependent of these agencies to conduct and perform many different roles and functions. Now it is important to note that all law enforcement agencies perform the same basic duties and responsibilities, which are, maintain law and order, provide community assistance, and investigate crimes. There are also agencies...

...Simmons, is a family-run company. In 1875, Simmons decided to change their business from wood products to woven wire mattresses, which contributed great profits to the company. During 1920s, Simmons had been an international firm with factories in Mexico City, London, and Paris, unusual for the era. But in 1978, Simmons ceased to be a family-run business. Following this switch came a succession of many owners, leaving Simmons unstable and without a long-term vision. In late 1999, Fenway Partners, who bought Simmons from Investcorp in 1998, decided to pick Charlie Eitel as the CEO of Simmons. Now headquartered in Atlanta, Simmons has 18 bedding manufacturing facilities that made mattresses across the U.S. The Simmons Situation Charlie Eitel, the fairly new CEO of Simmons, has a lot on his plate. His company is struggling, and he needs to rebound. There are many contributing factors that could lead to the demise of Simmons. These factors mostly branch off of the country wide economic struggle following 9/11. In addition to 9/11 backlash, he is also faced with the recall of a product from a supplier. While these issues are quite harmful, they are external characteristics and he can do very little to affect them. What he can effect is his within his organization, specifically, the workers. When analyzing the company he has noticed that there is a large divide in production coming from certain plants, and the culture observed at certain plants. For a large company such...

...possible. Police officers are faced with many dangers in their daily jobs. Police officers are constantly faced with the unknown and the unpredictable. A routine call could turn out to be deadly or contamination of infectious disease. The Internet has changed how police officers can complete their daily jobs; the Internet has opened doors to so many technological advancements and if all departments are updating their processes and up with technology their jobs could be much more adequate and less room for error or delays. Major technological advancements include database technology, computer aid dispatch, record keeping, and mobile computing. What was once known as the card file index is now known as databases or COMPSTAT, these databases hold criminal information, management information, reports that can be used for statistics or analytical information, trends in crimes, and also can be used for staffing based on geographic crime history. All of this information is at the fingertips of an officers or management personnel to quickly make a decision when necessary. Computer Aided Dispatch is much more efficient then dispatch verbally giving the officer the information allowing room for error. By using the computer aid the dispatcher will type the information on her/his end, and it will immediately be available for the officer on the other end, it will be shared with him both visually, and he can hear it from the dispatcher, no need to take...

...This means that probably the biggest part of education system is there to prepare you for a job. The job however, is a job that will let you earn your life in a very basic sense. It is understood as some kind of a security, a buffer that is provided by your education so that you have something you can use, even if it is not something you are passionate about. This gives me the impression that the education system prepares you for “survival” or for being a “worker” as we have discussed in the class. This is not really ideal in a world where almost our entire knowledge can be changed by a new invention or discovery at any given minute. Creativity, exploration, discovery, invention are the things that move us forward. Repeating the same thing over and over again does not get us anywhere. Most jobs are however still algorithmic and require certain skills instead of interdisciplinary education or creative ideas. How is one to pursue creativity as a cashier who is repeating the same process all the time? Since, as Robinson puts it forth, education system is based on preparing you for the current environment, the change can only radically come from the work environment. As jobs and work environment require more and more creative and diversely talented people, and interdisciplinary education so will the education follow-up to meet the need of generating such people. It will most likely come from the source of the need as it has always been. Humanity moves forward by first realizing and...

...Shanika Spencer ENG 112 Short Story Analysis Grief and Relief “The Story of an Hour” authored by Kate Chopin doesn’t actually take an hour to read. From Mrs. Mallard’s diagnosis of heart trouble to her death, “The Story of an Hour” is a conversation between the narrator and the reader. The narrator tells us things about Mrs. Mallard that Mrs. Mallard herself is not aware of. The conversation that the narrator presents to us is so vividly and dramatically written, it makes the lesson of “The Story of an Hour” obvious to whomever is reading it. In the late 1800s there was not yet such a thing as women’s rights or the independence of women. At the sound of keys at the front door, Mrs. Mallard made the ultimate sacrifice for her freedom. In “The Story of an Hour” the narrator is unknown. The narrator is playing the part of the guide, so to speak. The narrator is the guide that clearly presents every detail of Mrs. Mallard’s final moments to the reader. The narrator carefully starts out by telling us about Mrs. Mallard’s heart trouble and the fragility of informing her of her husband’s untimely death. One would expect a great amount of grief after being told that your loved one has passed but it was slightly different in this case. The narrator tells us that “she did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance” (Chopin Page#). Mrs. Mallard did not immediately understand the importance of the news she had just heard...
