...interacting with the patients, they show about HIPPA laws, when you see them talking about patient confidentiality they do it in privacy. The news shows the media how hard working the nurses are in emergency situations such as hurricane Katrina, hurricane Sandy. In an article that I read people were interviewed about how they viewed RN’s. And 77% of the people interviewed stated that nurses had a positive impact in their lives, gave them a great respect for the profession, that nurses work very hard and long hours. This article also suggested that the elderly were speaking more on topics like patient safety, and lead to more respect for nurses. This article also suggested that even on the negative side of nursing such as shortage, which the public contributes to salaries, and lacks of benefits nurses were still respected. Nurses’ being on strike is a negative look, but the public still portrayed nurses as a respected profession. 81% Hispanics, 63% of whites, and 61% of blacks all have a great respect for nurses. Both Rn’s and the public were interviewed and asked if they would recommend nursing as a career. And it shows that 44% of RN’s would recommend nursing as a career. Verse the public 63% would recommend nursing as a career. The public feels that nursing is a good career to enter into by watching TV shows as Gray Anatomy, watching the news and they see act of kindness by the media, internet searches on jobs that are arising in the near future all gives the public a positive...

...The nurses should take a systematic approach when it comes to investigating a new procedure. Before you decide to implement a procedure you must ask yourself “is this task or procedure in my scope of practice”? Nurses are responsible and accountable for the quality nursing care. If a procedure has fallen beyond the nurse’s scope of practice, we would meet the MD and find out the reason why they would want nurses to implement the procedure. I would look into my board of nursing practice act and the policy and procedure of my facility. There is a 6 step decision- making model for determining the nursing scope of practice in the Texas Board of Nursing. “This decision-making flowchart was developed by the Texas Board of Nursing staff to assist nurses in making good professional judgments about nursing tasks or procedures”,(Texas Nursing Practice Act). I think this is a perfect model to use when investigating a procedure or a task. If you find “YES” to the answers for all 6 questions, you can continue the task or procedure but; any of those answers are “NO” you have to stop and go through the chain of command to make a good decision. “Change is inherent in nursing practice. However the nurse must take lead in the development of any new roles or procedures” (Trim, 2009). ...asked to investigate a new procedure that physicians would like nurses to adopt in the hospital. Discuss the process you would apply to determine whether the procedure falls within the RN scope of practice and how you would go about introducing the new procedure with physicians and fellow nurses First, I would inform my direct supervisor about the request from the physician to implement a new procedure. If the request is approved by the nursing supervisor, I would further investigate the procedure in which the physician wants the nurses to adopt in the hospital, as it is imperative to determine whether the procedure is within the nursing scope of practice before deciding to adopt or implement it. I would do this by referring to my state board of nursing decision making flow chart. | 1. Is the function commonly recognized as nursing practice? NO YES ⇒ S.P. not required ⇓ | 2. Is it the standard of practice in the community that RNs perform this function in the clinical area for which it is being considered? NO YES ⇒ S.P. not required ⇓ | 3. Does the function require the nurse to: Diagnose disease, Prescribe medicine or treatment, or Penetrate or sever tissue? NO YES ⇒ S.P. required ⇓ | 4. Does safe performance of the function require judgment based on medical knowledge beyond that usually possessed by the competent RN in the area for which it is being considered? ...When asked if I would investigate a new procedure that the physicians would like nurses to adopt into their practice, I would follow the American Nurses Association (ANA) recommendations of the decision-making process. According to the ANA’s article Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, “the nurse has three professional resources to inform their thinking and decision-making and guide their practice” (ANA, 2010, p. 7). These three resources are the Code of Ethics, Nursing’s Social Policy Statement, and Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing. I would hold meetings where staff could attend and practice the skill, if needed. This would help each staff member involved to feel comfortable with their new procedure prior to implementation. The encouragement and positive words wouldn’t end when the policy or procedure is put forth, but would continue until each person feels comfortable with the new process. It would only be fair. Hopefully, these steps would make the transition easier. When asked if I would investigate a new procedure that the physicians would like nurses to adopt into their practice, I would use a systematic, step-wise approach as follows: 1.Define the issue. I would clarify what the specific activity or task entails and obtain any additional information that I may need, such as facility policies or procedures. I would also conduct a self-assessment with regards to my own skills and abilities, and my competency to perform the task. 2. I would be sure...

...If I was asked to investigate a new procedure that physicians would like nurses to adopt into the hospital, the first step I would take is to meet with the physicians to ensure that I fully understood the procedure in question. I would find out what the procedure was for, how the procedure was performed, and what the outcome of the procedure would be. It would be important to find out if this procedure was within the nursing scope of practice. The American Nursing Association would be my first resource to determine if the procedure in question was within the nursing scope of practice. If the new procedure was within the nursing scope of practice, it would then be important to determine if the procedure is ethical. If so then we need to ask if additional training would be required for nurses to perform this procedure. If so, education would need to be arranged and competencies verified before the nurses would be able to perform the procedure. During the educational sessions of both physicians and nurses, the new procedure would be explained. It would be important to inform the learners of why this new procedure is important for our patients and how it helps both the patients and the professionals. For example; does it reduce pain, incidents of infections? Does the procedure enable the professional to complete procedures more efficiently or safely? Whatever the benefit, whether to patient or professional, it needs to be emphasized so as to bring all on board with the...

George wants to complete his Bachelor’s degree in nursing and the needed courses are only offered in the evenings. George 's supervisor informs the staff of an upcoming opening in the morning shift and advises them of the application deadline. Based on some of the rumors that have circulated regarding past practices of his supervisor, George knows that his supervisor has already filled the position with one of her closest friends and that George's completing an application and interviewing for the position is nothing more than an exercise in futility. George brings his concerns to you, the HR supervisor. He claims that his gender and sexual orientation has affected his nursing supervisor's decision and that any complaint from him to the nursing supervisor will result in retaliation or termination. ...cannot blindly follow the physician’s orders. They must ensure that they are practicing within their scope of practice. If asked to investigate a new procedure with the view of implementing it, certain questions need to be asked. First of all, one must ascertain the details of the procedure. What are the therapeutic benefits to the patient and are there researches to back up the claim? Is it cost effective and safe? Is this procedure new to the institution and is it being done elsewhere? If so, then I would speak with the charge person about how the procedure is done in his/her facility. Importantly, does this procedure falls within the nurses’ scope of practice? One has to consult the state board of nursing practice act to ensure that the procedure is permitted. Does the procedure meets the standards of American Nurses Association, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare organization, or the Association of periOperative Registered Nurse? Research has to be done to ascertain compliance. The institution’s policy and procedure manual should also be consulted, to see if this procedure falls within the nurses scope of practice and if there any clause prohibiting it. Is he procedure consistent with the nurse’s basic training, or is there a need for additional training? If training is need then a resource person must be identified. If a new equipment and or supplies are involved, then the vendor must be a part of the commissioning. First of all, the supply and or equipment...

...adopt to ensure the safety of employees as well as the protection from liability. At PBJK Burgers there is an absence of a work refusal policy and procedure, essentially making the company not in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation of BC,(“OHSR”). As a result of this from a human resource professional perspective the following key issues were identified that PBJK Burgers needs to ensure: • Supervisors are equipped with the knowledge and skills to deal with unsafe work refusals. • Employees are trained on identifying unsafe hazards. • PBJK Burgers must have a work environment culture that cultivates support regarding refusals. With this in mind the reference manual aims to ensure the above is achieved and answered. Through research with Worksafe BC and a risk assessment it was identified that the following were common hazards at PBJK Burgers: slips, trips, falls, burns musculoskeletal Injuries, improper lifting/use of equipment and cleaning agents. This creates a medium to low risk, but without a policy or procedure leaves the company susceptible to loss. The loss could include negative impacts such as, brand damage, penalties, low employee morale, low productivity, higher injury rates and thus increased premiums. Building on this our analysis highlights the importance of section 3.12 of the OHSR procedures for work refusal. This section outlines the specific basic steps that should be completed to ensure the due diligence of PBJK Burgers. Appendix...

Discuss the process you would apply to determine whether the procedure falls within the RN scope of practice and how you would go about introducing the new procedure with physicians and fellow nurses. When it comes to investigating a new procedure, a systematic approach should be applied. It is imperative to determine whether a given procedure is within the nursing scope of practice before deciding to adopt or implement it. Some standard steps that must always be followed are based on the Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Standards of Practice, rights of patients, and safe nursing practice. According to Anderson (2013), determining if a new procedure is within the scope of nursing practice can be accomplished in three steps. First, define the issue, which means clarifying what exactly is being asked and what the new procedure entails. This step also includes gathering any additional information such as conducting a competency assessment to perform the task, as well as any previous experience, current knowledge and skill. Evidence-based practice and nursing research must also support the adoption of any new procedure. Secondly, since evidence is not the only component, the Nurse Practice Act and the policies of the workplace must also be considered. Nurses may be limited by the facility policies/standards to perform certain tasks even though the tasks...

...and tarnishes the public image of law enforcement. Furthermore, corruption protects other criminal activity such as drug dealing and prostitution. Protected criminal activities are a huge threat to the community because they are able to operate with the help of law enforcement. This paper will explore the efforts put forth by the Government to control police corruption with the hopes of ridding it from society. The Knapp Commission In the spring of 1970, then New York City Mayor John V. Lindsay placed a call to Federal Judge Percy Whitman Knapp. This phone call led to Knapp’s most visible role: chairman of a five-member commission that uncovered, after many months of investigating, a pattern of corruption familiar in precinct houses throughout the five boroughs of New York. This corruption included shakedowns at bars and construction sites to accepting payoffs from gamblers and drug dealers to ignore their criminal operations. The major catalyst for the inquiry came from a series of articles in The New York Times by David Burnham, an investigative reporter who had passion to expose police corruption (Burnham). The series of police corruption articles started when The Times was approached by two disgruntled police detectives, Frank Serpico and David Durk. It was later found that both detectives first voiced their concerns and disgust to various officials in the Lindsay administration, including Jay Kriegel, a top aide to the mayor, and Arnold...
