In Dave Eggers’ Your Fathers, Where Are They, And the Prophets, Do they Live Forever?, and Robert Bly’s Iron John, both novels addressed the issue of the absent father. Egger’s character, Thomas, is a man grown up with an absent father and a distanced and cold mother; thus, he has problems building up his own masculinity and being responsible like what a mature man does. He blames everything on other people and thinks that it is none of his fault; instead, he believes he is the victim who has no guidance and is treated unfairly. Hence, he kidnaps people to seek justice and answers for his friend and himself. In face, he is a confused man who lacks the archetype of male role model while growing up, representing a result of the remote father.
