Is Gatsby Really Great? Or is he Another Tom?
Jay Gatsby, also known as the Great Gatsby, is a well known, filthy rich man who lives in giant mansion. Jay is so friendly with the other characters, such as his party goers, Nick and Daisy. Gatsby is the mysterious and devilishly handsome protagonist in the story The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. On the contrary, we have Tom Buchanan, the husband of Gatsby’s lover, Daisy. Tom is very different that Gatsby looking from the outside in. What makes Gatsby. so mysterious? You might ask. Well, no one knows about Gatsby. No one knows Gatsby except Gatsby (Great). If you knew him, you might even say he’s more like Tom Buchanan on the inside it is almost as if, what Gatsby is hiding inside, is …show more content…
We have an idea of these facts because Gatsby told Nick a wide and varied story of himself one afternoon. The audience is also told that Gatsby is “the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West - all dead now…brought up in America but educated at Oxford” (65). Another known fact, is that Gatsby moved where he is now, so that he could watch the love of his life, Daisy, across the bay. Some people might say, “oh, that’s all wonderful.” It’s not. At first yes, Gatsby really does seem great, but in reality. He is far from great. Great. Ability, or intensity considerably above the normal. That’s the definition of great. When it comes to Gatsby, it’s understandable that he could be presented as being great in several senses, such as being a romantic, the way he is perceived, his potential. He has the wealth above average. He lives in an above average house. His love for Daisy is above average. Jay is very much great when it comes to persistence. He never gives up on the woman he loves. He bought a mansion for this girl, and he even took the blame for her by saying he was driving when Myrtle was ran over. However, this is just the audience on the outside looking in. The way we see him acting is not at all how he really is behind the closed doors of his elaborate castle. How about maybe he is more like Tom …show more content…
He attended the same college as Nick Carraway. He is a big star when it comes to playing polo. Tom is also very wealthy, and that is part of the reason that Daisy even married him. She couldn’t be with Gatsby because he was poor and didn’t have the kind of money she was looking into. It’s sad though because Tom ended up running around on his wife anyway, “Tom’s got some woman in New York.” (15). He would emotionally destroy Daisy when he had to leave the dinner table because of a telephone call and “Daisy shook her head decisively at Tom…” (15) Not only did Tom abuse his wife, but he was abusing his mistress in the city. Not in the same demeanor though. With Daisy it was just emotional, but with his mistress (Myrtle), it was physical. One night, at his hotel in Manhattan, Tom and Myrtle were throwing a party. During the party, Tom heard Myrtle speak ok Daisy’s name, and “Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand. Then there were bloody towels upon the bathroom floor…” (37) Now, the abusiveness is not the only funny business that Tom was up to.Everyone else could even see what was really going on with this man. He is described as “a body capable of enormous leverage - a cruel body.” (7) He is condescending (study.com)The fact that he was cheating on his wife, makes him a liar. I mean, who knows what else he lied about if he would do something such as have an affair. This is more along the lines

Daisy Buchanan symbolizes the failed attempt at finding ultimate happiness through money: ”For Daisy was young and her artificial world was redolent of orchids and pleasant, cheerful snobbery and orchestras which set the rhythm of the year, summing up the sadness and suggestiveness of life in new tunes” (143). Gatsby Greatness

...that some people might think he was great, but others might’ve not, but there are three people whose judgement is positive in all ways; those people are Nick Carroway (thinking that he is a very lavish, luxurious man), Daisy Buchanan (seeing him as her escape to happiness from Tom Buchanan), and F. Scott Fitzgerald himself (portraying himself as the protagonist of the story). The first example would have to be Nick’s perspective. Since the beginning of the book, Nick believed that Gatsby was a very lavish and materialistic man because of all the things that he had, especially his giant mansion. Nick goes on describing Gatsby’s luxury and his formality when he states, in chapter three, that a man formerly came and invited Nick to one of...

The Great Gatsby

...THE GREAT GATSBY The Great Gatsby is a tale of luxury, lust, deceit, and murder. In Long Island, New York, Nick Carraway lives next door to the mysterious Jay Gatsby, the owner of a huge mansion and host of frequent and lavish parties. Although prohibition has made alcohol illegal, Gatsby always has a surplus available at his wild social gatherings. As Nick starts to spend more time with Gatsby, he begins to learn about Gatsby’s past, his strange profession, and his love for Nick’s cousin, Daisy. The story that unfolds truly highlights the scandalous and risky nature of the Roaring Twenties. Fitzgerald had encompassed many literary devices in order to make this novel effective and more appealing. He has used techniques such as imagery, similes and the strongest one is symbolism. Fitzgerald has very smartly constructed his novel. "And only let me leave it in the soap dish when she saw that it was coming to pieces like snow.”(page 76) is an example of simile used in the text. This sentence suggests that Daisy was holding onto that letter until there wasn't really anything left of it. The letter obviously meant a whole lot to her if she took a bath with it. A representative of imagery used in the novel is "Gatsby, pale as death, with his hands plunged like weights in his coat pockets, was standing in a puddle of water glaring tragically into my eyes.” This sentence paints a picture in our heads of Gatsby feeling cold with his hands in his pockets, while standing in a puddle...

Gatsbys Greatness

...Daisy and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes” (97). This quote from Nick says a lot about how much Gatsby really cares about Daisy. Everything Gatsby had ever done was to impress Daisy and give her a reason to be with him. When he saw that Daisy was really impressed with his things, he knew he deserved her now. The only thing he needed to do after that was convince Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him. With the look in Daisy’s eyes, he knew she still loved him and he finally won her. This makes Gatsby really great because Nick knew that everything was for Daisy and this made him respect Gatsby. He had a goal and didn’t stop until he had gotten his dream. His determination alone made Gatsby “great” to Nick. “He did it without smashing up things and creatures and retreating back to the money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made” (9). Nick thinks Gatsby is so great because everything he has, has been earned without hurting anyone. Tom and Daisy both don’t take responsibility for the things they do. To Nick, if you don’t earn what you have, you will never be a great person, no matter how much money you have. Gatsby was able to take the blame for Daisy’s murder, and she would not do the same for him. Daisy would not even attend his funeral. She just left with no explanation to Nick or anyone...
