...SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR SMALL HOTELS JESSICA MOULD OKANAGAN COLLEGE Introduction Tourism is “one of the world’s fastest-growing industries”; as of 2012, “global tourism accounts for 1.2 trillion dollars (USD) in exports annually, 9% of worldwide GDP and is responsible for one out of every 12 jobs” [ (Canadian Tourism Commission, 2013) ]. Ninety percent of hotels worldwide are small hotels, e.g. hotels with less than 50 rooms (Radwan et al., 2010, p. 179). This essay addresses the problems associated with solid waste produced by the hotel industry including the difficulties faced by small hotels in managing their solid waste and ultimately describes benefits and solutions for sustainable waste management by small hotels. Waste minimizatioin is priority area 1 on Agenda 21 for the Travel and Tourism Industry [ (Stipanuk, 2006, p. 89) ]. The objective of priority area 1 is “to minimize resource inputs, maximize product quality, and minimize waste outputs” [ (Stipanuk, 2006, p. 89) ]. Waste is defined as “unused material produced as a result of inefficient production and/or consumption practices” that “puts economic and environmental costs on society through its collection, treatment and disposal” (Radwan et al., 2012, p. 535). “Waste can be regarded as a human concept as there appears to be no such thing as waste in nature” where “waste products created by a natural process or organism quickly become the raw products used by other processes and organisms”(Full Cycle...

Riyad (2014) found out that all the environmental problems that have come into focus in Khulna, Academic Institutional Solid Waste Management has been the slowest to develop either in direction or regulatory mechanisms. The study was conducted at different educational institutions in Khulna, Bangladesh to determine the waste generation rates and identify the current situation of the Academic Institutional Solid Waste Management (ISWM). Which can be helpful to sustainably manage the institutional solid waste. It was found that the organic food waste dominates in the in the university, such as the college, the technical college and in the secondary and primary primary schools the paper and cardboard category is predominant. The results of the study wpold provide us important insight into the growing concern of academic institutional solid waste management. The study helped to find out a better alternative of the existing solution of the waste management of Academic Institutional Solid Waste in the Khulna city. W.A. Dowie et al (1998) studied the institutional solid waste environmental management system (SW-EMS) developed and implemented at the Whiteshell Laboratories of Atomic Energy Canada Limited in Pinawa, Canada. The case study demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses of a simple, low-cost SW-EMS. In 1994, the institution launched a Go Green...

...Tom Hall Carbon Offsets and Reductions Carbon offsets are actions the University can take to counteract unavoidable carbon emissions and to counteract other emissions generated off campus. Carbon reductions are actions to lower carbon emissions generated on campus. In addition to all of the individual student proposals that all offset or reduce CO2 emissions in their own unique way, there are a number of projects being proposed to the campus as well as a number of projects already in place on University grounds that offset or reduce CO2 emissions that the university is responsible for generating directly or indirectly. There is a fine line between offsets and reductions and it is important to understand the difference. In order to discuss offsets, it is important to understand why people make CO2 offsets. There are a number of various carbon emissions that are unavoidable at this point in time due to societal structure like dependence on fossil fuels for transportation and some of the University’s utility use. Until major societal change occurs, like the removal of our dependence on fossil fuel and a total jump to renewable energy for our utility and transportation needs. Students, faculty and staff that commute to campus emit unavoidable CO2 emissions on a daily. Total wind purchase from the utility company does not offset the effects of natural gas use for heating (water and living space) and cooking preparation needs. To counteract these emissions the campus can continue...

...SCAVENGERS Team 627 SCAVENGERS Team 627 1. Introduction Rapid industrialization and population explosion in India has led to the migration of people from villages to cities, which generate thousands of tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) daily. The MSW amount is expected to increase significantly in the near future as the country strives to attain an industrialized nation status by the year 2020. Poor collection and inadequate transportation are responsible for the accumulation of MSW at every nook and corner. The management of MSW is going through a critical phase, due to the unavailability of suitable facilities to treat and dispose of the larger amount of MSW generated daily in metropolitan cities. Unscientific disposal causes an adverse impact on all components of the environment and human health. The waste generated is consequently released into the nearby environment. Solid wastes arise from human and animal activities that are normally discarded as useless or unwanted. In other words, solid wastes may be defined as the organic and inorganic waste materials produced by various activities of the society and which have lost their value to the first user. As the result of rapid increase in production and consumption, urban society rejects and generates solid material regularly, which leads to considerable increase in the volume of waste generated from several sources such as, domestic wastes, commercial wastes, institutional wastes and industrial wastes of most diverse...

The goal, as a socially responsible company, is to engage in business practices that benefit the environment.” [ (Smith, 2012) ] The area in which the company is located is considered high desert; consequently the region is often in a state of drought. ... Sarah Liao Master, New College Jockey Club Student Village III 9 Lung Wah Street Kennedy Town Hong Kong Dear Dr. Liao, I am Pan Yi, a Year Two undergraduate Economics and Finance major student living in New College for 2 years. I am writing this letter to appeal my unsuccessful readmission result. This appeal letter aims to provide justifications to why I believe I am a strong applicant who deserves readmission for the coming year and why I sincerely hope the management team will reconsider my case. This is to let you know that HKU has selected me for a summer exchange programme in the US, which means I have to leave on 25 May, and come back around 23 August. If my application is dismissed without strong justified reasons, I will be homeless when I come back. At that time, it would be rather hard and difficult, even impossible for me to rent a flat before the new semester starts within a week, and I have no place to stay during that period as well. Because most of the rents and contracts start from June, and I will not be in Hong Kong, it is impossible for me to find a flat now and I am not financially capable to rent a house on my own. If you ask me why haven’t I started looking for a house earlier, that’s because I was really confident that due to my devotion to New College I will be given ...

...children, sheltering them from everything bad in the world, DU seems to be doing the same thing. Unfortunately, in the real world, one cannot simply write an email to the vice chancellor of inclusive excellence about problems and inequalities they are facing, and have new policies put in place and a community email sent out, saying this behavior will not be tolerated. Although it should not be the case, students do need to develop a “thick-skin” when it comes to these issues because life is not as fair in the real world as DU is currently making it in college. In the DU Impact 2025, Chancellor Chopp identifies 5 promises to students. The promise of a “Holistic Approach to your Education, including Personal Navigation Skills to Life and Work” seem to not be completely met in this year of 2018. As a senior about to graduate, I feel nothing but unprepared for life after college as it relates to obtaining a job. As a liberal arts college, DU requires different courses be taken such as AI Society, SI Society, a year of science, etc. However, none of these requirements relate to daily life. Sure, my theatre class was fun, but I have no idea how to negotiate a salary, what a 401K entails, or how to prepare for a job interview. In...

...Some of the measures LOCOG has taken to make the London Olympics sustainable include the creation of the Olympic Park on once-contaminated industrial land in east London's Lea Valley, the recycling of over 98 percent of waste during construction and the commitment to do the same in the demolition phase. Steiner listed LOCOG's accomplishments on a walk through Olympic Park. "London's clean-up of an old industrial site; the restoration of flows and habitat on the River Lea; the greening of supply chains; the low energy linked with the design and construction of the stadium, including utilizing old gas pipes for the facility's Olympic ring; and the use of temporary structures to reduce emissions are among the actions that can assist in inspiring the organizers of the Rio 2016 games and beyond," he said. This is the first time that a host city has committed to measure its carbon footprint over the entire term of the Olympic Games from construction to the finish line. UK Secretary of State for Environment Food and Rural Affairs Caroline Spelman said, "We are committed to building a future for everyone where the natural environment is not just protected, but valued as a national asset." "We are delighted to have set new standards in sustainable development, and to showcase the expertise and ingenuity of British companies in delivering a green Olympics so warmly welcomed by Mr. Steiner," she said. | Secretary Caroline Spelman, left, and other dignitaries introduce the One Planet...

...What’s So Bad About Plastic Bags? Plastic bags are not biodegradable. They clog waterways, spoil the landscape, and end up in landfills where they may take 1,000 years or more to break down into ever smaller particles that continue to pollute the soil and water. Plastic bags also pose a serious danger to birds and marine mammals that often mistake them for food. Thousands die each year after swallowing or choking on discarded plastic bags. Finally, producing plastic bags requires millions of gallons of petroleum that could be used for transportation or heating. Consider a Personal Ban on Plastic Bags Some businesses have stopped offering their customers plastic bags, and many communities are either considering a ban on plastic bags or have already implemented one. Meanwhile, here are a couple of things you can do to help: Switch to reusable shopping bags. Reusable shopping bags made from renewable materials conserve resources by replacing paper and plastic bags. Reusable bags are convenient and come in a variety of sizes, styles and materials. When not in use, some reusable bags can be rolled or folded small enough to fit easily into a pocket. Recycle your plastic bags. If you do end up using plastic bags now and then, be sure to recycle them. Many grocery stores now collect plastic bags for recycling. If yours doesn't, check with your community recycling program to learn how to recycle plastic bags in your area. ---________________________________________...

...Walmart Manages Ethics and Compliance Challenges Sanelesia Hawkins West Georgia Technical College Abstract Despite its financial success and international proliferation, Walmart and its business practices have generated controversy and divided public opinion. Supporters praise Walmart’s sales of needed household items and groceries at relatively low prices, while critics condemn the corporation’s generally low wages paid to employees and its tendency, as a big-box retailer, to put small, community-based stores out of business. As a result, Walmart is often the subject of intense social and political debates pertaining to capitalistic practices and ethical treatment of workers. Another major criticism of the company pertains to its long history of allegedly “invading” smaller towns and communities, establishing stores, and thereby driving small, family-owned and -operated stores out of business because they were unable to compete financially. Walmart Manages Ethics and Compliance Challenges Walmart has been criticized by many groups and individuals, including labor unions and other groups. It has been accused of selling merchandise at such low costs that competitors have tried to sue it for predatory pricing (intentionally selling a product at low cost in order to drive competitors out of the market). Over the last decade or so Walmart has become involved in numerous lawsuits for a variety of reasons. The majority of the suits are class action lawsuits in which employees...

...environment (Kaufman, 2009). Because of the repercussions of wastefulness, recycling is essential. As a student at Pierce College I care about my school’s environmental impact. Pierce College should implement a systematic recycling program that separates paper, plastic, and non-recyclable waste. Programs that recycle materials such as paper, glass, plastic, and metal are one way to decrease the amount of resources (especially non-renewable ones) needed to produce a given amount of products. What is less obvious is whether such programs save more money than they cost, or more energy than they consume. Recycling programs can in fact be worth their cost, but only if the programs are run efficiently, with sufficient education for those involved. In Washington State 60 to 80 percent of waste is recoverable through recycling (Recycling Saves Money). If Pierce College enforced a recycling program and reduced their waste by just 60 percent they could save thousands of dollars each year by avoiding landfill costs. The only costs to account for are recycling bins and time spent educating staff and students on the program. For the program to be as effective as possible people need to be educated. I recommend that an email be sent out to all staff and students informing them on the new recycling program and how it works. There should also be a new page created on the Pierce College website dedicated to the recycling program. A total budget of $14,210 is enough to cover the cost of a new webpage...
