...Steve Jobs' Leadership Legacy: Focus On Strategy By Margaret Heffernan Poor Steve Jobs. Not only has ill health forced him to relinquish the job and the company that he loves, but he must also suffer the Twain-like horror of reading his own obituaries. No doubt many will laud his design sense, his presentational skills, cool advertising, obsession with details and maniacal oversight. But many business leaders have had these talents and few have fared as well. What Jobs has had, par excellence, has been something less romantic but extremely rare: strategic coherence. Few CEOs these days have a strategy. That's the conclusion Richard Rummelt draws in his new book Good Strategy/Bad Strategy. But once of Jobs' many strengths has been his profound understanding of, and sensitivity to, externalities. When Apple roared back to market dominance and outstanding profitability in 2005, it wasn't just because iPods were cool. It was because, at the beginning of the century, Jobs had put in place a product plan aimed at one great external future event: the moment that broadband penetration in the U.S. exceeded 50%. Once that occurred, digital entertainment became technically and commercially feasible. In the period 2002-5, Jobs assembled and owned all the components he'd need to take advantage of the new broadband market: WebObjects, Safari, iTunes, QuickTime and the MacOS itself. He also threw a vast proportion of the company's cash at a retail strategy that experts said was extravagant...

...Kristine Prais MGT210 W01/Case #1 3/29/2016 Tanglewood: Staffing Levels and Staffing Quality 1. Staffing Levels a. Acquire vs. Develop Talent i. Whether a company chooses to acquire or develop talent within the organization both options have positive and negative outcomes. Developing existing talent within the organization would be a way for the company to slow down and concentrate on making sure they hold on to their strong company culture. Tanglewood stores want to keep their culture in focus and are proud of their high employee morale and participation, and I recommend developing existing talent within the company. b. Hire yourself vs. Outsource ii. Tanglewood is focusing its attention on centralizing its human resource department and has recently hired two educated individuals to help with reinforcing and improving the human resource function. Therefore, it would be beneficial to utilize these new additions to Tanglewood and not let the hiring be done by an outsource agency. Since Mr. Perrone and Mrs. Gonzalez have been informed of the weaknesses of the staffing process they are knowledgeable on what type of employees would be valuable for Tanglewood. c. External vs. Internal Hiring iii. Tanglewood is committed to providing maximum values and a strong culture for its employees. Tanglewood also wants their customers to experience a unique and personable shopping experience. Consequently, internal hiring will be...

...with authority, there could be many challenges. Challenges refer to some different thoughts which are happened between the superiors and the subordinates. The dilemma is whether do as what the boss told or follow the original heart. This dilemma is the main focus of Tom and Frank’s case study, ‘Challenge the boss or stand down?’ (2011). ‘Challenge the boss or stand down?’ concerns a general issue in the company D7 Displays. A rising star Tom challenged his new boss Frank in the public, and they have different opinions. Tom is facing the dilemma which may lose his job, and he has to choose a better method to solve this issue. As a diligent employee, Tom wants to do his best and gain reliance from his boss. He argues that the airline kiosk business is hurting by the web service and the only way to compete is developing the kiosk-based services which could make profit or provide more benefits. However, Frank, who is his new boss, is firmly holding the different opinion. Frank points out that the airline kiosk business presents a mature market and clients will not resign it. In addition, the hotels and car rental markets are wide open, and the company should develop these areas. Frank asserts that Tom was out of line and focus on the part not belongs to him. Advice about this dilemma is given by two experts, Jeffrey Pfeffer, a professor from Stanford University and Paul Falcone, president of human resources at Time Warner Cable. Both of these experts consider that Tom should...

...generation is different from the generation 20 years ago in terms of spending education for the young people. Parents today are exerting more efforts than before, looking for extra job if possible just to sustain the basic needs or physiological needs of their family. Education sometimes compromised by some parents for their young children to work just to support their family. But still there are young people who are determined and motivated to continue their studies despite of their undesirable situation. They are trying hard in their studies for them to avail scholarships available in different colleges and universities programmed for deserving students but others unluckily did not avail due to limited slots given. How these students continue with their quest living with quality of life? Are there any options available for them? The most common phrase we heard from common people is: we can continue with our studies later but this time we have to work first, let’s be practical. The focus of today’s students is to enroll for one or two years then apply for work because the minimum requirements is college level but soon they will realize how important is education and most probably the realization came in late of their lives, that’s the real thing. People spend too much in shorter plans and they did not focus on the longer one. Parents also lacks of motivation for them to encourage their students to continue. ...Conflict Resolution Cherie Whipple LDR/531 April 6, 2015 Ronald Baker Conflict Resolution Knowing how to handle various situations in the workplace can determine success or failure within an organization. In the following, we will discuss three storybook situations where issues exist among employees. The discussion will look at communication styles and barriers and then look at the conflict and negotiation process involved in handling the situations. The first situation centers on communication challenges among employees. Storybook 1: Communication Challenges In storybook one, we have a communication barrier called filtering. The employee tries to put a spin on things to make the news look good to management when it truly is not. In this situation, I would let the individual know that it is acceptable for him to provide the bad as it has happened. I would go on to tell him that it would benefit him and other staff to provide exact facts, good or bad. This would be much more helpful to be able to resolve the problem effectively. In the case of the employee that did not want to voice her opinion, I would encourage her to voice her opinion even if she is hesitant. I would inform her that her opinion is as valuable as the opinion of all team members. I would also reiterate that no member would be chastised for his or her thoughts or opinions. All team members will be respectful of what each member has to say. I would also reiterate the purpose of a team is to work together...

So when we were asked to great a piece of artwork in tribute to our artist, we thought about out artists’ works of art and we decided on the best way to pay a tribute to them. The group that I feel did the best job in paying a tribute was the group that had Gertrude Goldschmidt as an artist. I observed during their presentation that they created one of the best pieces of artwork that resembled their artists work without copying it. During the groups presentation, I felt like they met the requirements in the rubric and they did a great job with describing their art and also all the Principles and Elements of Art. The group stated...

And then, he continued to say that to teach and work with students is his favorite work. He also said to spend a lot of time on research is not his will, and he would like to be with his family if there are 48 hours a day. When he said this I felt a man who has sense of responsibility and loves his family deeply. .To answer the central point of this interview, his response is that business students focus specific problems on their business, and the essential focus of science students is how to combine the theory with practice. At the beginning, I feel a little nervous; however, from the whole interview I find Dr. Jimmy is a friendly and approachable person. Thanks for his time and patient. ...The main focus of this article was on two different types of cheating. The 2 types were planned cheating and the panic cheating; they compared and tested both in online learning and Traditional classroom setting. They also listed the differences between the online classroom and the traditional classroom. The steps one would take to prevent planned cheating are to have more confidence in oneself when writing papers, also having enough time to complete the assignments on time. As for steps for the panic cheating it was concluded that this form of cheating did exist in online learning as this practice is more reserved for the classroom setting For the second article I used academic honesty as the keyword in my article search. The title of the second article was: The culture of cheating: from the classroom to the exam room. The authors were Danielsen RD; Simon AF; Pavlick R. This article was published in March of 2006. ...Methods of the Ssu-Ma (author unknown) both focus a lot on a sort of “code” for warriors during warfare. My question is what is the best way to raise troops? These two readings explain different answers to my question, but to answer it myself I would say the best way to raise troops would be to not focus solely on things such as strength or marksmanship, but to focus also on the mindset of a troop and how to pull through in times of difficulty and how to respect warfare and their unit and how to face fear and overcome obstacles. Taira Shigesuke writes about how, first and foremost, a warrior should consider it his first concern to keep death in mind at all times. But you don’t just have a duty to the military; you have to fulfill your loyalty to your family as well. Unlike the warrior ways described in the Ssu-Ma, Samurai warriors focused day and night on their duties as a warrior, whether they were a farmer, or merchant, etc. They always carried a sword with them as to always be prepared and keep death in mind at all times. Education was not important early on, and even 12 and 13 year olds were learning martial arts instead of focusing on becoming literate. Their sole focus was the way of a warrior. Now, however, those born in the present era focus on literature and reading and writing from the time they are seven or eight in times of peace. A big difference between the Ssu-Ma and the code of the Samurai is how much the Samurai focus on their familial duties. They are taught...

...accumulated overtime (mostly through habit), in part two, (here on working with a ‘liberated’ voice); to go through a developmental process which focuses on range and power (viz. the ‘resonating ladder’), in part three; to turn focus to the breathing apparatus and thereby develop an awareness and sensitivity to different ‘areas of breath’ in the body and, in part four; to bridge the connection of this work to text and acting. Through this approach, Linklater states that the general aim of the book is to “present a lucid view of the voice in the general context of human communication and to provide a series of exercises to free, develop and strengthen the voice – first as a human instrument, then as the human actor’s instrument” (Linklater, p 1). This essay will summarize some of the major points of the book, offer briefs descriptions of some of the exercises and determine whether this book could be useful to the aspiring actor who is interested in learning more about the craft of voice and speech. Linklater claims that the particular approach of this book is something that has evolved over a number of years and is largely the result of the work of Iris Warren; a pioneer in the science of voice production because of his emphasis on turning the focus of voice work from external physiological knowledge to internal psychological understanding. Though heavily influenced by Warren, Linklater’s book also draws...
