The Introduction of John Philip Sousa The composer that I chose for this project was John Philip Sousa. The time period is Romantic era, 1820-1910. When the Romantic era started they began breaking out of the strict rule of the classic. The French Revolution was going on when he was composing. When he started composing he was 23.
The Early Life of John Philip Sousa John Philip Sousa was born November 6, 1854 in Washington D.C. In his childhood he started to play the violin at age 6 eventually he learned all the wind instruments. He was very interested in being in a band so at age 13 he tried to join a circus but before he could leave his father figured out and stuck him in a marine band for 8 years in Washington DC. He was one out of nine kids. He had 4 brothers, Ferdinand M. Sousa, George Williams Sousa, Louis Marion Sousa, and Antonio Augustus Sousa. His five sisters were Annie Francis Sousa, Josephine Sousa, Mary Elisabeth Sousa, Catherine Margaret Sousa, and Rosina Sousa. His parents were John Antonio Sousa and Maria Elisabeth Sousa.

He composed because since he was 6 he wanted to be in a band. John Philip Sousa and his 100 musicians went on tour in 1928. He traveled to Europe, Africa, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Honolulu, and the Fiji Islands. When they were traveling over 60,000 people visited him and his 100 musicians each week. After that John Philip Sousa led the the marine band in a new composition, the “Royal Welsh Fusiliers March,” at the dinner of the Gridiron club in Washington on April 26, 1930. He composed that night in honor of the cooperation of the famous Welsh regiment with the american marines in the relief of Tientsin in the Boxer uprising. He composed over 300 musicals in his life. Most of them was when he was composing “Stars and Stripes Forever.” One of his other songs was “The Fairest of the
