Joseph Raymond McCarthy was born on November 14th,1908 in Grand Chute Wisconsin. He was the fifth child of nine and grew up shy and awkward. By the age of 14 he finished grade school at Underhill School. After graduating the eighth grade he decided to start a chicken business, as a teenager, but lost his flock due to disease. By the age of twenty he decided to work at a grocery store in Appleton, and quickly rose to the position of manager. In 1929 he was transferred to a different store in Manawa,Wisconsin. The next year Mr.McCarthy ran against Robert M. LaFollete Jr. for a seat in the Senate, and won being the youngest Senate member. McCarthy's early years in Congress were relatively uneventful, mostly dealing with housing legislation and sugar rationing. As troubling past events began to come up, on January 7,1950, Senator McCarthy sat down with some colleagues to discuss what to do next in his future campaign. They brought up communism, which became McCarthy's new enemy. Communism was a very good issue to deal with as there was a rising fear of communism, making it easy to rally support behind it. On February 9,1950 Senator McCarthy claimed that Secretary of State Dean Acheson held a list of 250 people in the State Department that are affiliated with the American Communist Party, although this figure changed every time it was brought up with Mr.McCarthy based on his mood. On February 20,1950 Senator McCarthy delivered a six hour speech to the Senate while they attempted to extrapolate any solid facts or information from the Senator.
