...Jessica Mae B. Fernandez BSM21 What keeps me going? Sometimes, life can be tough. There are days that I get tired, hopeless, or that I am on the verge of giving up, but I tend not to. This is because I am surrounded with people and things that inspire me to get going. Through them, I am able to move forward. Let’s put first things first. Of course, my greatest motivating factor would be my family. They are always there to encourage and support me in my decisions. As an only child, I am the only one who will take good care of my parents when they grow older, that’s why I must be successful so that I can provide them what they need. And at the same time, I don’t want to disappoint them. So when the time comes that I have achieved my goals, I would gladly share my success with them, because success-- when you don’t have someone to share it with-- is totally worthless. Aside from my family, another thing that motivates me to keep going is my goals. It is just fascinating to know that there are still better things ahead of us, and some of our best days haven’t happened yet. Great things are bound to happen if we just choose to go on and work harder. Maybe, there would be ups and downs, but that’s a part of life. If we give up just because of a little rain, how can we enjoy the rainbow that appears after that? This college, I just made a bucketlist for all the things I want to accomplish just like places to visit, books to read, bands to watch, extreme activities to experience--...

...Castles are often pictured as enormous, magnificent stone buildings that are home to kings and queens. However, castles did not start out that way. The first castles were known as motte and bailey castles. They first appeared in England after the Norman Conquest in 1066, and they were popular in England by 1087, when William the Conqueror died. Motte and bailey castles created the basis for the hundreds of castles built in England and Wales. In the motte and bailey castles, the main building was on top of a man-made hill, which usually contained “22,000 tons of soil,” called the motte (Trueman). They were very difficult to make because there were alternating layers of soil and stone so that the structure would be stronger. However, one castle could be built in eight days if enough people assisted in the building. The castle could be accessed by either wooden stairs or a flying bridge. The bailey was below the motte, and it was surrounded by a wooden fence to protect the inhabitants. William continued to build these castles during his reign in locations where the people usually rebelled. This “[reasserted] his authority” because it gave people the impression that William’s feared army was nearby (Trueman). As soon as “the people of England had been tamed,” William began planning the production of stone castles (Trueman). These stone castles eventually evolved into the sturdy and defensive structures known as concentric castles. Concentric castles were made of stone and had...

...the poem tells about the advice of a mother to her son. In the first line shows an effort of a mother to advise her son. I imagine when I am in trouble or make mistakes; indeed, my mother will try to give me advice in order to cheer me up or encourage me. It also appears in this poem. Going to other lines explain the hardship of her life, and in the second line up to seventh of the poem attempts to portray her suffering in life. It seems she has faced very tough struggle. I can utter it because I see in the second line she describes her life as no crystal stair. I picture the words no crystal stair as though her experience in life which is not sparkling and luxurious like crystal. In addition, stair is the foothold for us to stand before we step higher to reach the top, I guess. She must have not only trouble but also bad situation. The third line adds that her life is full of tacks which mean pain. Our foot will be bloody if we tread it because tack is keen. So, the pain happens in a mother’s life. In the following lines keep talking about her troublesome life. However, in the last line she remains strong. She does not give up even though she has to face so many problems in life. She keeps going on...

...“This life is what you make it. No matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends - they'll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything - they're your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they'll come and go too. And baby, I hate to say it, most of them - actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can't give up because if you give up, you'll never find your soulmate. You'll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn't mean you're gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don't, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life's a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about.” “He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; Who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; Who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; Who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it; Who has left the world better than he found it, Whether an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued...

...never chose her boyfriends or sex partners; she let them choose her.” (Jay 101). Hearing this I take dating down to mean you’re just going for anyone that comes to you and accepting it. The phrase really does put things in perspective; you’re basically dating less than what you can really get to feel some sort of love; which I guess is dating down from what you deserve. “Her mother said she needed a different outfit or better body, her father told her she was too much, too loud- too something.”(Jay 100) This boost the title “dating down” because her parents are literally putting her down which is causing the way she is going about dating in the first place; not much relevance but just stood me out that, a girl who is being put down let it define who she is dating. This whole chapter kind of lived up to its name; circled around this 8girl’s struggle to fit in and how Jay too that and helped her “take charge of her love life” (Jay 111) and help her revise her own story. I thought it was interesting how Cathy used music to cope with these problems; I also liked how Jay used the personification of her Ipod “whispering in [Cathy’s] ear] (Jay 104) which made m picture someone sitting on her shoulder telling her she’s alone. Cathy said something that brought it all together and it was near the end of the chapter; she said “I feel like I have to keep hooking up and see what fits” (Jay 107). This really opened...

...Crystal Pena ARTO53 Professor Beechner November 19, 2011 What went well during the presentation? During the presentation was well researched and people in my group chose pictures that gave interest for the class. We did meet once to at least get some ideas to make the class interested of each topic from the chapter. A lot of pictures did draw attention to me that I didn’t even know about. We did keep contact of our time during the presentation, just so we can be one track. The activity was fun to watch the student did participated, to get a reward of candy. We try to be well talkative too few of the students in the class or at least see that they were paying attention. Overall, we did do the presentation that brought something more with meaning in each of our sections from the chapter. What went wrong during the presentation? Time management wasn’t well accurate during the presentation, and really not that pretty to see. We did do things at the last minute by posting a few more pictures for the power point. The meetings we have had were only an hour long and we never manage to meet continuously or rehearsed our presentation. Mainly, in our group felt like individuals not as a group, we never brought the unity of helping, organizing, and being a team. During the presentation, we went to over the topic of our sections. We didn’t use a lot of pictures from the book or any info about the sub-titles. Seeing, it now didn’t make sense from our group, we knew it was confusing to the...

...Birling is described at the start as "a pretty girl in her early twenties, very pleased with life and rather excited." Even though she seems very playful at the opening, we know that she has some suspicions about Gerald when she mentions "last summer, when you never came near me." This could suggest that she is not as naive as first thought. Sheila is not aware of most things her parents get up to, along with Gerald of whom she later finds out some disturbing news. At the start of the play we see that she does not really understand how things work, all she knows is that they do. But as the play goes on we watch her change, for the better? Throughout the play we watch as Sheila matures and grasps a hold of reality and actually sees whats going on behind the scenes. She finds out that even the people she knows and loves, can be manipulating and dishonest. At the end of the play, Sheila is much wiser. Her decision to wake up and confront her parents and Gerald was the transition from naive girl to mature women. The results of this were not what she expected and made her realise that not everything what it seems. At the end of...

...LET’S HOPE I wish the way I was living could stop, serving rocks, Knowing the cops is hot when I'm on the block, And I Wish my brother woulda made bail, So I won't have to travel 6 hours to see him in jail, And I Wish that my grandmother wasn't sick, Or that we would just come up on some stacks and hit a lick, And I Wish my homies wouldn't have to suffer, When the streets get the upper hand on us and we lose a brother, And I Wish I could go deep in the zone, And lift the spirits of the world with the words within this poem, And I Wish I could teach a could teach a soul to fly, Take away the pain out cha hands and help you hold them high, And I Wish My hommie Butch was still alive And on the day of his death we had never took that ride, And I Wish that God could protect us from the wrong, so all the soldiers that were sent overseas come home. we would never break, though they devastate, We shall motivate, And we gotta pray, all we got is faith. Instead of thinking about who gonna die to day, The Lord is gonna help you feel better, so you ain't gotta cry today. Sit at the light so long, ...
