“We gon’ be alright Do you hear me do you feel me? We gon’ be alright.” To an outsider just looking at these words they don’t know what it actually means. What it really means is that no matter what, people who are facing heavy discrimination, specifically African Americans, will be alright no matter what’s thrown at them. Kendrick Lamar is known for the music he has released, the grammy’s he has won, but what he should be better known for is the advances he has made for civil rights. Kendrick Lamar is able to give a voice to all the people out there who don’t have a voice through songs like “Alright,” “The Blacker The Berry,” and “I”. On that night an innocent 17 year old black male, Trayvon Martin, was murdered by George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman who killed an innocent young adult was charged with 2nd degree murder and eventually, by 2015, acquitted of all charges. The news of this sparked countless protests, infinite heartache, and most importantly justice was not served. On February 9, 2015 close to 3 years after this incident, “The Blacker the Berry,” was released by Kendrick Lamar looking to guide people and provide them with hope. The people needed it; Trayvon Martin’s death was not even close to the only incident where an African American is found dead and the killer is not held to justice. In “The Blacker the Berry,” Kendrick describes the struggles that African Americans face everyday in today's modern society as well as the frustration that comes with wanting and deserving more than you have. Kendrick describes many problems with modern society's views on what it means to be black, specifically saying that Black History Month is not a true celebration but more of a political necessity. In his final words Kendrick Lamar finally lets it all out, “So why did I weep when Trayvon Martin was in the street when gang banging made me kill a n**** blacker than me?
