...Employers are demanding their nurses to have more than just the knowledge to care for patients. They want the nurse who is placed in a management role to have the knowledge to be a leader. Nurses are returning to school to gain more knowledge in their career field, increase effective communication skills, have a higher potential for promotion, and to have a greater earning power. When deciding to return to graduate school, a student must have a strategy that is going to get them through the next two-four challenging years of their life. Personal and Professional Goals My reason for pursuing a graduate degree is to gain more knowledge in the healthcare industry, become a more effective communicator, advancement of career, and have a greater earning power. The healthcare field has changed considerably in the past 20 years and in the past nurses did not need a graduate degree to become managers; however, employers are now requiring nurses to have graduate degrees to become managers. Gaining a graduate degree will give me a sense of accomplishment in knowing that it was a goal...

...Historical Transitioning and Growth of the U.S. Health Care Systems Strayer University Historical Transitioning and Growth of the U.S. Health Care Systems Abstract I found four articles that talked about the milestones in healthcare, financial and technical structure, changing demographics and the baby boom generation. Some of the authors include James Kirkman, Emily Snell, Rick Ratliff, S. Smith and the European Commission Decision. As time moves forward, health care continues to change and evolve in order to keep up with the growing population. If we did not constantly analyze each health care system to see where we need improvements, we would not be able to successfully fulfill our patient’s needs. First we must examine the key milestones involved in the past and present shaping and transitional dynamics behind changes in the present health care industry. Ratliff et al. (2012) stated that “Where central governments have traditionally implemented whole-system change, we also can see similar attempts to connect healthcare providers as part of a single system. A national culture and the relationship between government and its citizens are also influencing factors. Accenture’s previous research into citizen perspectives on healthcare quality has shown that the balance of trust, confidence and communication between citizens and government can vary tremendously across nations”. By having this type of arrangement and effective communication, when it is time to move to something...

...Health care and everything that it surrounds is continuously changing on a daily basis. There are many milestones that helped shape the health care industry. Some of these milestones of past and present are the substantial growth of uninsured Americans, the rising cost of health insurance and premiums, and The Health Care Reform Act. The financial aspect and technology has also changed healthcare. More money is being spent on technology which allows better treatment for patients. Advanced technology has led to better health care quality and the reduction of medical errors. There are social dynamics that also helped shape healthcare. The changes in demographic across the country play a major role in the type of health care that is needed and available for a specific group of people depending on where they stay and their income. Some of the major fluctuating and daunting challenges in health care management are operating cost, government mandate and regulation, and the new system put in place to comply with the ICD-10 diagnosis code system. All of these things play a major role in health care and the changes that are happening everyday. The amount of people who are uninsured in the United States is substantial. Most people who do not have insurance are low income working families. In most instances, the adults are the ones who are not insured but the children are. The reason for the rise of uninsured Americans is the high price of health insurance and the loss of jobs...

...Introduction The world is a cold place these days for businesses seeking profitable international growth. In a few industries, firms have to be global if they are to achieve leadership. Implementing a global expansion strategy is crucial to the growth of a business from small start-up to international brand name. Companies such as McDonald's, Home Depot, Starbucks and more have made their presence known around the world over the past few decades. However, each global expansion presents its own set of obstacles which the parent company must tackle, in order to be successful in their global expansion. In a borderless world, companies need to compete on a global level in order to succeed. In today's world of financial uncertainty, it is important for businesses to have a clear idea of what stability involves for their company. One concept that more and more businesses are exploring is one of taking their business to a global level. Using an international strategy is not for every company, but with the availability of the Internet it is becoming easier to take your business to that next level. ...Rockefeller Foundation entered China with the objective of building modern, westernized medical schools in both Peking and Shanghai. It purchased the Union Medical College from the London Missionary Society in 1915 and built a faculty of over fifty professors and upgraded facilities after which it was renamed to the Peking Union Medical College (The Rockefeller Foundation). Both John D. Rockefeller, Sr and his son considered China to be of significant interest, especially after Frederick Gates, their advisor, propelled them to give more attention to that region. The 1914 China Medical Commission, dispatched by the Rockefeller Foundation, carried out a medical education survey which found awfully low standards in medicine education and healthcare throughout the nation. The report concluded that the need for external assistance was great due to scarce resources within the nation (Ninkovich). Thus the China Medical Board, one of the first operating divisions of the Rockefeller Foundation, was...

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Success Conrad Cordova HCS/504 January 24, 2013 Kathy Watson Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Success I have made three monumental decisions in my life. The first was to join the military, which led to a very rewarding and exciting military career, where I refined the core values I live by today. The second life-changing decision, and greatest accomplishment, was getting married and starting a family, which I value most in my life. My decision to return to graduate school and pursue my Master’s degree and become an advanced practice nurse is the third most challenging decision of my life. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Do one thing every day that scares you” (Moncur, 2012). Starting graduate school, I felt the same fear, nervousness, and excitement I experienced with my other major decisions. Interestingly, I feel more nervousness going into this program than when I volunteered for a tour in Iraq. After 15-years as a nurse, I feel compelled to make a greater difference. I am very passionate about nursing and feel a “calling” to make a difference in my patients’ lives. As a critical care nurse, I can help save patients’ lives and make an immediate difference in their acute medical crisis, but once they leave my unit, they disappear, and I never know their long-term outcome. I yearn to develop the knowledge, skill, and expertise not to just care for them, but their whole family as a unit, and promote...

...Reform Target There has been much addressed about the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA). The law was passed to allow preventive care more accessible and affordable to the population. Today, most health care payments are made on a fee-for-service basis, which rewards overuse, promotes waste and inefficiency, and pays little attention to accountability for quality of care. The ACA offered the opportunity to test alternative payment models that pay health providers based on the value of care rather than volume. This change in the law of health care allows payments to healthcare providers on the quality of care, rather than the quantity of care. The models implemented under the ACA rewards health providers who can improve patient outcomes and reduce costs through a variety of approaches, including shared savings, financial risk, and enhanced payments for care coordination and service integration. Some key examples of these new models are patient-centered medical homes, bundled payments, and accountable care organizations. These alternative models are close to meeting the goals of improved quality and reduced cost. The models are also looking to have some promise when it comes to meeting the goal of requiring providers to reduce hospital readmissions and rewarding meaningful use of health information technology (Zeke Emanuel, 2015). Today is the crucial time to apply these new payment models on a more widespread to improve American health care. This helps by utilizing the...

...Health Promotion: A More Detailed Look at Health Promotion and Nursing Nayeli Luna Grand Canyon University August 18, 2013 Health Promotion: A More Detailed Look at Health Promotion and Nursing A vital part of nursing care involves the care of patient’s in all stages of health. This includes the concept of health promotion, which can be defined as the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health (Edelman and Mandle, 2010). Health promotion is an important concept in nursing because it encompasses concepts that nursing is concerned with today (Edelman and Mandle, 2010). Today much of the nursing role is involved in health teaching as a form of health promotion. However, we will look at the three levels of health promotion prevention, describe the purpose of health promotion in nursing practice, explore nursing roles and responsibilities evolving in health promotion, and explore implementation methods for health promotion that incorporates areas of nursing. Three Levels of Health Promotion Primary Prevention Level According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health promotion can be defined as “the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health.” (WHO, 2009). Health is reaching a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, by an individual or group. In the primary prevention level, health promotion is focused on preventing or delaying onset of chronic disease (Edelman...

According to "Nursing Theory" (2011), The nursing theory was named “The Adaptation Model,” and includes a “six step nursing process: 1) The first level of assessment, which addresses the patient's behavior, 2)The second level of assessment, which addresses the patient's stimuli, 3)Diagnosis of the patient, 4)Setting goals for the patient's health, 5)Intervention to take actions in order to meet those goals, and 6)Evaluation of the result to determine if goals were met.” Theory’s Historical background: Sister Callista Roy is considered a living legend as she has been awarded various acknowledgements for her contributions to nursing. Sr. Roy developed the Adaptation Model in 1976, and for the past 36 years, she has been researching and updating her work, literally adapting to the ever-changing world and social needs. She has based her works upon a holistic approach that incorporates the patient’s needs that are “individualized in accordance to the patients’ religion, background, education, family, and society as a whole” (Boston College William F. Connell School of Nursing, 2012). The patient outcome, good, bad,...
