...returning to the brigade after commanding a battalion in Europe for the last two and half years. I will experience many challenges as the brigade attempt to restore its old reputation, but the most critical challenge I will experience is building an effective and cohesive unit in a time constraint environment filled with many leadership challenges. I must ensure the readiness of the unit as we prepare for our next deployment. There are several challenges affecting the brigade that must be addressed, if left unattended, they will negatively hamper my ability to build a cohesive team. Some of the issues I am currently facing is a new staff with key personnel still due to arrive, the unit has a negative command climate as emphasize by many of the junior officers and senior non-commissioned officers, and the unit is experiencing re-deployment stress as a result of a high-OPTEMPO. There are many other challenges corroding the morale and command climate of the brigade. Some of the soldiers assigned to the unit have complained about not having the time to reintegrate into family life since their return from a recent deployment. Due to an undocumented and unreported incident while the unit was deployed to Iraq, I have to deal with the negative implication of a sniper shooting and killing an Iraqi civilian. ...Introduction Colligan and Higgins (2006) define workplace stress as the “change in one’s physical or mental state in response to workplaces that have an appraised challenge or threat to that employee.” The authors divide stress into two categories: eustress and distress. In eustress, the positive stress, the associated stressor has been cognitively appraised as positive; distress is the negative kind of stress, such as that experienced by employees who feel frustrated by a pressure to perform. All employees respond cognitively, behaviourally, emotionally, and physically to both eustress and distress. Moreover, the authors identify three levels of stress—acute, episodic, and chronic—each level of which has associated emotional and physiological symptoms. The authors point out that several factors contribute to workplace stress, such as a toxic work environment, an unmanageable workload, and challenging working hours, while adding that training can help alleviate workplace stress. Shuttleworth (2004) argues that training in workplace management can help employees become more resilient in the face of stress and better able to tackle the root causes of stress-related problems. Key Assumptions Colligan and Higgins (2006) make the following key points about workplace stress: * Workplace stress can lower productivity, increase absenteeism, and create pervasive patterns of dysfunction in the workplace. Workplace stress will also lead to changes in employees’ work habits and...

...The definition of personal responsibility is not one you can just look up in a dictionary and expect to find, but there is no denying a clear definition does exist. Personal Responsibility is taking responsibility for your actions, accepting the consequences that come from those actions and understanding that what you do impacts those around you. In order to be successful in anything in life it is important to understand this definition and live by it. More specifically when it comes to success in the college environment it is important to realize that personal responsibility is key in making it to the end of a degree program. While many college students belief is, as long as you’re staying focused you don’t need a plan, I believe that a plan is necessary and by setting clear goals, having uninterrupted work time, and managing stress levels succeeding in any course will be a breeze. The first thing I feel that is extremely important as a personal responsibility in order to succeed in school is to set clear goals. By setting goals that are on point with your schoolwork I am holding myself accountable and making sure I meet the deadlines not only set by my instructor but by my own standards. Personally, I hate the feeling of letting myself down just as much or more than letting an instructor down so it works as a double check system. Some goals I will have in participation are being active in discussion boards and doing my part in my group projects. Some other personal...

...development has become of more importance in recent years as organisations utilise the investment of human resource development to an advantage (McCarthy & Garavan, 1999). Career or professional development for the purposes of this report can be defined as an attempt to help the individual analyse their abilities and interests to guide their placement, progression, and development through various assessment activities (Gunnigle & Flood, 1990, p. 172). Literature suggests that the effectiveness of several management and professional development activities can be enhanced by paying attention to managerial self-awareness and variables related to self-awareness like self-efficacy (McCarthy & Garavan, 1999). ...Activity 9.3 The extent to which you experience stress and how you cope with it may depend on your resilience and your ability to cope with the stressors you encounter. 1. Examine a stressful situation that you encountered in the past 12 months. 2. How did you manage the situation? You may want to refer to your study guide (Figures 1 & 2) 3. Could this be managed more effectively if you confront the same problem again? 1. Antai-Otong (2001, p.35) states ‘Stress often emanates from negative or positive feelings or situations.’ Prior to going on maternity leave, my working environment was really busy and chaotic and management really wanted our team to meet our stretched financial targets. As I only had a few months of work remaining before I took maternity leave, my manager was insistent that achieving the numbers would be beneficial for my remuneration should I wish to return to the organisation. I became extremely stressed and obsessed over achieving these numbers. Cryer, McCraty and Childre (2003) assert that stress consists of an external stimulus called a stressor and the emotional and physical responses to that stimulus. In retrospect, the irrational and unrealistic demands I placed on myself resulted in the following perceived stressors: time stressor: trying to achieve six months of work into three months interpersonal stressors: “I am not dependable, if I don’t deliver these results.’ career/life stressors: “If I don’t achieve the results then...
