The Effect of Overpopulated Deer on the Environment

...deer, many changes have occurred to the habitat of the deer which has caused changes to the habitat of other species, as well. These changes cause concern regarding the impact the overpopulation has on the environment and other species of animals. There is also an increased human health and safety issue with the increase of deer. Deer overpopulation is causing many concerns, including human health and safety concerns, ecological impacts, and economic losses. The human health and safety issues associated with deer are primarily deer-vehicle collisions and transmission of Lyme disease. “It is estimated that 29,000 people are injured and 211 lose their lives annually in deer-vehicle collisions in the United States.” (Curtis) This number continues to rise as the overpopulation of deer continues to increase. Deer are coming out of the woods for food and water which causes an increase in the number of deer in human populated areas and highways. Deer-vehicle collisions is also one of the many economic losses that is associated with the overpopulation of deer. The expense of vehicle repairs and, sometimes, medical bills, due to vehicle-deer collisions is very high. There is also the human health and safety issue associated with the deer and the concern of the transmission of Lyme disease, as well as other more serious diseases by the “Black Legged” or “deer tick”. Lyme disease can cause arthritis or joint pain in humans and permanent damage if left untreated or a long period...

Global Climate Change

...Global Climate Change Global Climate Change I’m sure that everyone has noticed that the Earth has been heating up over the years. In fact, the planet is warming up rather quickly. Scientific evidence reflects this change. However, not only has there been a change in temperature, but also precipitation patterns and storms. This is said to be a result of global climate change. What is global climate change? Global climate refers to the average climate over the entire Earth. The term climate is used to describe weather conditions of a certain area over a long term period, almost like the normal weather. Do we care about global climate change? Yes, it is very important to be aware because everything that happens with the planet directly affects something else. Finally, what is causing this global climate change? Actually, scientists have yet to come up with a concrete answer on this, but for the most part, they agree that people are causing the Earth’s climate to change. How might people be the cause of global climate change? Well, scientists have concluded that most of the observed warming is very likely due to the burning of coal, oil, and gas. About two hundred years ago, technology led to an increase in population which led to an increase in the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. This increased consumption of fossil fuel led to huge amounts of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. (Hardy, 2003). The burning of fossil fuels causes greenhouse gases...

Landscape and Resources Memo

...Landscape and Resources Memo Laura M. Davis GEO/215 February 10, 2014 Renee Tan Landscape and Resources Memo The agriculture areas close to UrCity has, until recently, contributed to the reduction in overall city temperatures. Because of the significant growth of UrCity, this expansion has pushed agriculture further out into the desert basin. UrCity has experienced a rise in temperatures and changing weather patterns that are directly related to urban sprawl. UrCity’s expansion has also demanded an increase in water usage which has become a burden on existing water supplies. Many citizens have also noted the decrease in wildlife that has been typical of the city. This memo will address these concerns and offer viable solutions to the above noted issues. Agricultural Practices The farms surrounding UrCity have taken advantage of traditional farming practices. Monocropping, heavy use of pesticides, and large amounts of water have been keeping these farms operational and profitable for many years but at a high cost to their immediate environment. According to Sustainable Table (n.d.), “Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are derivatives of fossil fuels, including oil and natural gas. The use of fossil fuels is the reason the Earth is experiencing dangerous climate change (Climate Change). The overuse of chemicals has directly contributed to the problem of rising temperatures in and around UrCity. As UrCity becomes larger, the demand for land increases. This has pushed...

Global Warming

...Global warming is a severe problem facing the world today. Based on the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report (AR4 2007) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), as Earth’s climate began to change due to the rise of global temperature, there will be an increased tendency for drought, melting of ice sheets in Greenland or Antarctica and this will pose a major threat to human existence. The greenhouse effect is much to be blamed for global warming as carbon dioxide accumulated at the atmosphere will prevent most of the outgoing infrared radiation at the atmosphere from escaping into outer space. The main source of carbon dioxide emission is the burning of fossil fuels to generate energy in order to meet our daily requirements. Although the dependable energy supply by fossil fuel is essential in our every day life, because of its adverse effect is why the government should implement policies to encourage the use of renewable energy resources to conserve the environment. Fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, uranium, natural gases are non-renewable energy sources, which mean these resources cannot be re-made or regenerated. In contrast to that, renewable energy resources like hydroelectric energy, solar energy, wind energy, and geothermal energy do not deplete, or it will take a substantially long time to deplete them as it can be replenished by nature. Statistics has shown that there is an increase in the investment of renewable energy over the pass few years, in 2007 more...
