...A time I left a lasting impression on a patients family is about a year ago. I had an older gentleman who was brought into the Emergency Department by ambulance for abdominal pain. Report also included that he was pale and had a low blood pressure and a very distended abdomen. Upon arrival to the ED, the patient was placed on the heart monitor, had multiple IV’s established, blood work drawn, medications verified, and multiple tests ordered. My assessment which was initially focused on the patient who’s blood pressure was low, was having a hard time staying awake, and much pain in his abdomen. The issue not only was to stabilize the patient, while figuring out what was causing the pain & distention in his abdomen, but also to try to get the patients pain under control without further lowering the patients blood pressure. The labs showed low blood counts, with the patient needing blood transfusions on top of the IV fluids and medications being used to raise his blood pressure. The imaging studies showed a twisted bowel, with a large area of potentially dead gut. With this, the patient in his stay then needed to be prepared for emergency surgery. While this was all going on, it was also keeping in mind that the patients spouse was in the room. She needed to be comforted to, listened to so she new she had a voice and was being heard.
