When does Leadership turn to Bullying?

Leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead your team by example. Being a leader, you must have an honest understanding of who your team is and what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience. The leader is the one who has an idea of where he wants to take the team. This approach is non-manipulative and seeks to find solutions that are good for both the leader and those he leads.
But too often, the person who is chosen to be a leader settles for being a boss or bully who unilaterally makes decisions to drive the team where he wants it to go. Often the leader uses coercion or manipulation to get people in line with his vision. This type of leader ends up becoming a bully who consumes the weak to fuel his own ideas. This can cause all sorts of problems with thin the team. Bullies often have several warning signs. Some of the warning signs you might witness is a bully uses their power in negative ways like screaming, shouting out negative gestures, threating body language. Bullies in most cases will try to bring a person or persons of the team self-esteem too its lowest. The best thing to do in response to a bully is to look for ways to stop his behavior like confront the bully and let them know their behavior won’t be tolerated in the team. I will determine that one of the main responsibilities lies with management, but that other factors such as personalities, workplace ethic, policies, working culture, organizational behaviour and industrial nature have their own roles to play. In his article Gerald Nachman recounts how years ago it was a part of being a kid in school to be teased at some point and it made you a stronger person to come through school surviving the process. There has been an increase in the sensational media coverage of violence attributed to bullying. Almost weekly, there are headline news items concerning acts of violence committed on school grounds, which involve shootings of innocent students by disgruntled gunmen. The underlying cause is portrayed to be a result of some sort of bullying at the hands of peers. One such incident which occurred in an Ohio High School resulted in the death of three students. The gunman’s motives were not clear but, “Yet even as police worked to secure the crime scene, one word quickly attached to the unfolding drama: bullying.” (Cloud, 2012). Further investigation discovered a connection to one of the victims through a former girlfriend of the shooter. The gunman had a troubled family situation which may have contributed to his resorting to violence as a solution.
