Leadership Approach XXXXXXXX LDR531 September 5, 2011 John Schobin Leadership Approach The purpose of this paper is to explore the situational leadership theory as an approach to studying leadership. We will also explore the participative style of leadership as well as discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this type of leadership. Finally we will examine an organizational example where participative leadership was used effectively. Situational Leadership Theory The situational leadership theory is a contingency approach to studying leadership. It helps to identify appropriate leadership behaviors when dealing with subordinates who are at different levels of maturity in relation to the task at hand. The level of maturity of the subordinate will determine the actions taken by the leader. The theory categorizes subordinates’ maturity level into four quadrants, M1, M2, M3, and M4. For a subordinate who is low in maturity (M1) the leader should use primarily task-oriented behavior and be very directive with outlining policies and procedures. The leader will also maintain close supervision to monitor the subordinate’s progress. As a subordinate matures (M2, M3) the leader can use less task-oriented behavior and incorporate some relations-oriented behaviors. These relations-oriented behaviors include support, consultation, and praise. For subordinates with high maturity (M4) the leader should use low task and relations-oriented behavior. These subordinates can perform without much direction or support from the leader. The leader can influence the subordinate’s maturity level by increasing the subordinate’s responsibility

There have been many studies devised by researchers in order to come up with the definition of leadership. The behavior approach is one of many used in those studies. Description The behavior research approach came about when researchers, discouraged with the lack of results of other research approaches, started paying more attention to the behavior of managers, what did they actually do when at work. Richard was a great leader whom I looked up to since I was in my early teens. Richard understood life in general and did nothing to take advantage of it. He respected all people and never under estimated their capacity to shine. I watched this man personally give each person regardless of who they were, his undivided attention and he remembered everyone by name. He even showed interest in each of his employee’s families and asked often as to their condition and if there were anything he could do for them.
