...Effective managers that apply leadership theories and motivation theories can create productive employees to reach organizational goals. In the case study “A Question of Motivation” Robbins and Judge (2007) have created two managers for this scenario; Jonathan is the more effective manager who is liked by his employees while Dan is a less effective manager that is not well liked. They also introduce two employees; Stephanie who works for Jonathan she is very happy with her job and has a high respect for Jonathan as her manager. Alex is very unhappy with his job and has no respect for his manager Dan. Our team has chosen to analyze this case study by applying the motivational theories of “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” and the “Equity Theory of Motivation”; the leadership theories of “The Path-Goal Theory of Leadership” and “The Hershey-Blanchard Life Cycle Theory of Leadership” (Certo & Certo, 2009). Motivation Motivation is very important in understanding employee’s behavior and can influence this behavior to accomplish goals and objectives. Managers need to understand their employee’s needs, roles and perceptions in order to motivate (Certo & Certo, 2009). In the case study by Robbins and Judge (2007), “A Question of Motivation” the two managers (Dan & Jonathan) have two totally different ideas of motivation. The motivation theories that can be applied to this situation are Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the Equity Theory of Motivation. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs...

...Leadership and Motivation in High Performance Teams Debbie Boyle Wilmington University MOL7500 High Performance Teams Dr. Nicole Evans June 28, 2015 Abstract The two main articles that I chose address the motivational process and leadership in high performance teams. A team is a group of people with different views and knowledge who join together to achieve a common goal. Using incentives to motivate team participation will increase team effort. Good leadership skills is having the ability to motivate, bring people together, have an open mind and put your personal biases aside. A true leader must have a vision of the future for the organization and its members. In the article Motivating Interdependent Teams: Individual Rewards, Shared Rewards, or Something in Between? talks about how the motivation process in teams does not receive much attention. To motivate team members, managers need to find ways to motivate both the individual effort and the skillfulness of the individuals various expertise. This article suggests that when managers increase effort in one area that other areas the attention may be reduced. The use of incentives is the most commonly used tool to motivate team participation. When team members are rewarded you will see more effort put into the attainable goals. This article conducted a study and focused on hybrid rewards as a secondary bonus. “In teams with high levels of task...

The main issue with this concept is that it can not be measured, and at the same time is very hard to observe. Bryan Schaffer (2008) identified two principles in link with motivation: it is a function of the individual and the situation, and performance is a function of ability and motivation (which he also links to effort). Donna J. Plonczynski (2000) defined motivation as an “intrinsic determination toward goal attainment”, which is also composed of “components of personality and personal habits that indicate performance”. Humphreys and Einstein (2004) state that most motivation definitions focus on “the notion of enhancing and sustaining effort toward some desired goal-directed behaviour”. According to these findings, we could identify two important dimensions of motivation: individuality and goal. Individuality refers to the diversity of factors affecting...

...Motivation and Leadership in the Workplace Chasity Roush PSYCH/570 September 1, 2014 Instructor: Michelle Seyfarth Motivating and Leading the Impossible Motivation and leadership skills are fundamental aspects in achieving organizational goals. Organizations that motivate and lead are more likely to employ individuals who understand the values and vision of the organization. Latham and Ernst (2006) suggest that motivation affects personal choices, effort provided in the workforce, and how persistent employees are to provide outstanding work efforts. Applying proper motivational theories to employee’s, results in great leadership. Retention and productivity in organizations prosper when employees are loyal and dedicated. Loyalty and dedication is formed through the proper application of motivational and leadership theories and improve customer service as well as employee relations. Leaders must be aware of employee strengths and weaknesses and must inspire their employees to achieve great things. Great leaders, while powerful and influential, should possess skills to gauge each employee and what motivates them. Leadership theories, like motivational theories, may differ per employee. Understanding a variety of wants and needs in the workforce will enable a great leader to motivate each person for the common goal; organizational success. Although leaders exert a certain level of power with the organization they must ensure...

Roche, the company has grown to add regional offices in Las Vegas, Nevada (established in 1986) and Westminster, Colorado (established in 2001). My current title is a Project Engineer. I have held that position for approximately 1yr. I started with the company 1 year ago with the title of Project Engineer which can also stand for Assistant Superintendent. The first project I worked on was the construction of a Tom Thumb grocery store in Flower Mound, TX which had its grand opening on October 31 2012. Since then I have had the chance to help with project development and to oversee small projects in the Dallas and Houston markets. In commercial construction there is a different organizational structure than most other...

...are department managers, customer service associates, and cashiers, which are all usually the hourly employees. Often in retail organizations, the upper managers are considered the leaders in the company. They tend to make sure that all of the employees are punctual and that the employees are finishing their tasks in a timely manner. Sometimes employees are late for work or absent. This usually is the point where management may have to warn or possibly write-up employees who are continuously late or absent. Typically, if an employee is late or absent consistently, they will be terminated by management. I am going to examine and discuss how motivational theories could be applied to absenteeism, while analyzing the role of organizational leadership in absenteeism as well as evaluating the role of power and influence in absenteeism. Motivational Theories There are four general areas of motivational theory: need-based theories, job-based...

...The Expectancy Theory of Motivation explains the factors or the levels of which employees are motivated. There is a direct correlation of an employee’s trend to act in a scenario is dependent on the expectation the act will render. There are three key components and relationships in the expectancy theory. Effort-performance, Performance-reward, and Rewards-personal goals relationship are the three factors that define this correlation. These three will be discussed in detail accompanied by a proposed application for the given scenario. First of all in the Effort-performance relationship deals with “sweat equity” or how much effort must the employee invest in the position. The amount of effort is directly related to the amount of the reward in return. The employee takes the amount of time and calculates the required effort to ensure delivery of the expected level of performance. If the response to this calculation is negative there will be a decline in performance or meeting the goals outlined by the performance assessment. Secondly, the Performance-reward relationship means that the employee is performing at a particular level that will to obtain the reward. Meaning that the action required is no longer calculated based on effort, the employee now has decided to take on more tasks to render the reward. It deals with the question of how long must the employee work at a higher level to be rewarded accordingly. This relationship, has been consider a weak point in a lot of...

...Leadership Scenario BMGT364 March 28, 2014 Abstract This paper explores two leadership theories and two motivational theories and applies each to the case study of Alex and Stephanie. Alex and Stephanie are employees at the same company that has different attitudes about his and her employment. This attitude is directly related to his and her respective managers who practice different styles of leadership and motivation. The paper is a compellation of four students and each student's perspective of the case study as it applies to his or her theory. Each student is given an individual theory and asked to explain the theory in detail and input his or her personal thought regarding the theory and how it applies to the case study of Alex and Stephanie. The theories discussed are the situation and path-goal leadership and expectancy and reinforcement motivation theories. While these are four of the many theories, these are the four which the writers felt applied to the case study. Keywords: leadership theory, motivation theory Leadership Scenario Leadership and motivation are integral parts of management. The successful observations of management to assess or modify his or her style of motivating and leading is the key to reaching the mission and vision statement of the organization. ...LEADERSHIP, MOTIVATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL CONFLICT MOST PRESSING TOPICS IN ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR Organization behavior is the study of behaviors and attitudes of people in an organization. After all human behaviors and attitudes determine effectiveness of any organization. The approach used in studying OB is the system approach. In other words, this approach interprets people-organization relationships in terms of the whole person, whole group, whole organization, and whole social system. Its purpose is to build better relationships by achieving human objectives, organizational objectives, and social objectives. In this paper we propose to study leadership, motivation and organizational conflict, as among the most pressing issues in organizational behavior. Further, we shall discuss how these issues can be addressed. 1. Critical role of motivation It is critical for managers to understand why and how employees are motivated if they are to make full use of a worker’s capacity to learn and perform. For a manager, motivating employees to learn and perform at their best is a complex and difficult challenge. No two individuals, that is, no two employees including the two who are doing the same job are alike. At any time two different individuals will have two distinct needs and desires. Moreover, what motivates an employee to perform well today may not motivate him the next year, or next week, or even next hour. However, a motivated set of employees represent tremendous...

...Introduction Leadership plays one of the vital roles in any organization. Emerging successful organizations are true examples of the strong leadership foundation. The term, leadership has the management scope and their communications has a tremendous effect on the performance of the employees. Eventually, this further gets identified as a strong leadership foundation to manage organization communications effectively. An effective leader is an inspiring person who focuses strategically (Richmond, 2011), analyze problems and honor customer commitments on time. Many people believe that leaders are born to be strong and influential. Good leaders are made, not born. However, anyone can be a strong leader as long as determination, open-mindedness, and optimism are learned and developed. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience (Jago, 1982). To inspire your workers into higher levels of teamwork, there are certain things you must be, know, and, do. These do not come naturally, but are acquired through continual work and study. Good leaders are continually working and studying to improve their leadership skills; they are not resting on their laurels. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. This definition is similar to Northouse's...

...The Southwest Way: Leadership, Power, and Motivation When Herb Kelleher and Rollin King founded Southwest Airlines in 1971, their mission stated the “dedication of the highest quality of customer service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit” (Smith, 2012). With that mission in mind, Herb Keller and Rollin King managed to make Southwest the only profitable airline in the United States (Smith, 2012). Southwest’s mission is not the only reason why the airline continues to grow. Without the way, Herb Kelleher former CEO of Southwest, had developed a particular leadership style, power base, and a set way the organization motivates its’ work force, the company would not be as successful as it is today. Leadership is “the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 377). When examining Kelleher’s leadership, he possesses two different leadership styles which both have similar characteristics. The first leadership style that Kelleher posses is a transformational leadership style. A transformational leader is a “leader who inspires followers to transcend their own self-interests and who are capable of having a profound and extraordinary effect on followers” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p 391). Transformational leaders tend to communicate high expectations, promote intelligence, and give personal attention by coaching. The second leadership style Kelleher possesses...

...|Summary Motivation, Leadership and management and human resource management are important factors in the working of any organization. Each of them have certain theories or principles founded by various researchers and scholars. These theories have gained some criticisms over time. Under motivation there are two types of theories: content and process theories. Content theories include Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene theory. Process theories include equity theory and expectancy theory. The organizational example is that of a robotics’ manufacturing firm. Leadership and management includes trait theory of leadership, leader behavior theories which focuses on the Michigan Studies and The Ohio state studies and contingency theories of leadership which includes Fiedler’s Contingency theory and the |Path – Goal theory of leadership. This is followed by the fourteen principles of management. The organizational example is that of Continental |Airlines. Lastly, there are three models mentioned under human resource management, the Harvard model, the Michigan model and the Fombrun, Tichy and Devanna model. ...Types of Power Which type of power do you find most effective? Which type of power do you think you have? Do you use it? If so, in what situations? How could you improve your leadership and management skills now that you have a better understanding of the types of power and how they are applied? Remember to always add the "whys" with the "whats." I believe that most of these different types of power can be effective given the situation in which they are used. If I were to choose which of these I would find the most effective in a general setting I would choose charisma power. The reason I would choose charisma power is because of the effect it has on large groups of people. A good example of this would be Obama’s speeches and how his charisma got nearly the entire nation behind him during his first run for presidency. Thinking about the different types of power, I would probably say that I have a rational type of power. I use rational power during normal social settings on a regular basis. Normally when I am at work I use my reasoning and problem-solving skills to influence the situation. Let’s say that me and some of my co-workers have been given an assignment and told we need to have it done by a specific time. One of the co-workers are convinced that we should do it a specific way, but I noticed a problem with the way in which they want to do the assignment. I will approach my co-worker and in the most respective way that I can I will explain to them the flaw that I see...
