...What learning style will I use to finish college, and why? AMU It has always been a goal of mine to go to college get my degree however, sometimes goals change or get pushed down the list as you get older just as our learning styles may change. I attended Austin Peay University in Clarksville, TN from 2003 to end of 2004 while playing football for the university. Unfortunately I did not finish and now 9 years later my goal to get my degree is on its way to coming true. The military has helped financially by paying for school with Tuition Assistance and the GI Bill. I will achieve these goals by overcoming adversity and the tasks that are presented to me. As I go through this journey, I will use and learn different learning styles to achieve this goal but what styles are you most commonly using every day? I asked myself and considered this too. Firstly, when I look back to when I was a child I remember in class having to read material over and also asking the teacher to repeat directions for the assignment. I also notice today that I am not a good auditory listener based on past experiences in school and the different jobs I have worked at. Besides this, I am excellent in the visual and hands on learning styles. I can usually see something done once and be able to do it. I took a quiz from the website https://www.learning-styles-online.com/inverntory and answered a number of questions. As a result of these questions, it showed all the different learning...

...VARK Analysis Paper Learning styles do not dictate a person’s intelligence or their abilities to learn; instead it explains why some learner’s process information acquired differently than others. How a student retains knowledge depends on how that learner comprehends and process the information. VARK learning analysis quiz and learning style is a study to determine one’s learning style. VARK is an acronym for visual learning style, auditory learning style, reading/writing learning style and kinesthetic learning style. This paper discuses all the different learning styles but focuses on the Kinesthetic learning style and strategies that may offer an easier way to retain and enjoy any learning experience After taking the VARK learning analysis quiz it was determined that this authors learning style is more kinesthetic with a score of 14. “Kinesthetic learning is a learning style in which learning takes place by the students carrying out physical activities, rather than listening to a lecture or watching demonstrations,”("Kinesthetic learning," 2010, para. 1). Kinesthetic intelligence makes up about five percent of the population and was originally coupled with having tactile abilities or using the body to do something. According to the theory of learning styles, termed as “discovery learners”, kinesthetic learners struggle with reading or listening and have realization through doing rather than thinking before initiating an action.("Kinesthetic learning," 2010, para. 4) Using...

Williams, Ph.D. Associate Professor All professors at: Northern Arizona University The W. A. Franke College of Business PO Box 15066 Flagstaff, AZ 86011.5066   The Effect of Learning Styles on Course Performance: A Quantile Regression Analysis Introduction Students have different learning styles. “They preferentially focus on different types of information, tend to operate on perceived information in different ways, and achieve understanding at different rates” (Felder, 1993, p. 286). In this study, we investigated the relationship between student performance and learning styles for students enrolled in a basic business statistics course. This course was recently redesigned in order to facilitate learning for students of all learning styles. A learner-centered approach that incorporated multiple teaching styles such as student responsibility via mastery and co-operative learning that used teams in several course components was adopted. In addition, the focus of the redesigned course was on interpretation and implications of statistical results instead of the mechanics of computation (Lockwood, Ng, & Pinto, 2007). To assess our success in designing a course that facilitates learning for all learning styles, we evaluated the impact of students’ learning style on their...

...Investigation into My Learning Style Ben Thiel COLL100 American Military University Professor Corey Tutor Investigation into My Learning Style Throughout life the term “learning style” is used, each individual has a different assumption of the definition mostly the individual takes on a personal stance and states, “I’m an auditory learner, if you say it once I will remember,” whereas others refer to themselves as most commonly visual or kinesthetic students. However, for one to limit themselves to possessing one type of learning style is quite a limitation. I have always considered my learning style to be predominately visual learner. According to Felder & Soloman, (n.d.) there are multiple learning styles aside from the traditional visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Felder & Soloman (n.d) present eight different learning styles which include; active, reflective, sensing, intuitive, visual, verbal, sequential, and global. Although these styles tend to pull from the traditional three; their definitions give more depth to the characteristics associated with one’s preferred learning style. Felder & Soloman developed a personal questionnaire which allows an individual to answer a series of forty-four questions. Results are given to the individual based on their responses; the scales range from one to eleven in one direction or the other these values compare two learning styles. The numerical value represents the individual’s preference for one learning style verse the opposing...

...Learning Styles Learning style is the way an individual learns best. There are several different learning styles, and ways to determine your learning style. VARK is one tool used to determine your learning style or styles. VARK, developed by Neil Fleming in 1987("Learning," n.d.), suggested that there are four different categories of how individuals learn best. Fleming called these modalities. This questionnaire is to help individuals have an idea of their preferences for learning. Preferences may be different than strengths. This questionnaire is about how an individual learns best, not how they behave doing things of leisure. The acronym VARK stands for the four modalities that students learn best by, which is Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic sensory. The two learning styles VARK identified for this student is Aural and Read/write. They had equal numbers. Aural is learning best by hearing and speaking. This can include any form of listening and speaking including email, on the phone, texting, listening to lectures or speakers, discussion. These individuals like to hear the information first, and then talk it out, ask questions, have a discussion. The learning style Read/write is learning best by words, and any form of words. These learners love dictionaries, quotes reports, and power point to name a few. No only do they like lists, they make lists also. They like using manuals. This student found the VARK questionnaire to be extremely correct. The type of...

...Learning Styles and Strategies  My learning style is generally well balanced between active, reflective, sensing and intuitive learning. However, I have a more moderate preference toward the visual learning over verbal and the sequential over global learning.  The results of my test did not surprise me. I realize that I comprehend better when shown how to do something over reading directions from a text. I feel the assessment of my test was very valid and the questions that were asked were relative to the process. I believe that my test results were very accurate.  As a learner the instructional strategies that work best for me are the visual along with sequential and I would use these in a classroom with games, graphs, pictures, charts, films, and other tools.  To help students that do not learn in the same way, an instructor must incorporate other strategies in the classroom to accommodate each of the different learning styles. This would include using the reflective learning style by giving the student a chance to think about a subject and come to a conclusion to bring to class a discussion. It would also include addressing the verbal learning style by assigning reading material of different types the student could address in class.  An evaluation quiz could be used in the classroom utilizing each learning style to access the different learning styles of the students, giving the instructor information about her students learning skills. This information could...

...three different learning styles I have come to the conclusion that the one that best fits who I am is a tactile/kinesthetic learner. A tactile/kinesthetic learner is someone who learns best by moving around, by being hands on, and they may even have a hard to time sitting or standing in one place for a long period of time. I know that personally I find it hard to stay alert when someone is lecturing to me. However, when I am able to touch something, or put something together, or physically move around, I am more apt to stay alert and actually remember what I am supposed to be learning. Because I am taking online classes it is sometimes hard for me to figure out exactly what I am supposed to do on certain assignments. I came up with a strategy to help me figure out how I was going to learn by taking online classes. I found that the best thing for me was to print out everything so that I had a hard copy. I make several notes on them and I physically write down almost everything so that it gets beaten into my head. When I make notes I am able to use the physical part of my learning and is has helped tremendously. Also, because it is hard for me to sit still at the computer for a long period of time, I write my assignments down on paper and then transfer them to the computer. Another big thing that helps me is taking breaks when I have a hard time figuring something out or when I have a hard time concentrating. On Wednesday February 10, 2010 the seminar two quiz is due. ...situation. Although they attempt to generalize how people learn and understand, one can see through real world experiences that the information we communicate isn’t always universally understood. During some circumstances studies and actual learning experiences will tend to vary. From my earliest years in the military I’ve always wanted to earn my college degree. I felt that finishing my education would be a personal milestone in my life and that it would better prepare me for the future beyond the military. Although it has taken nearly eight years to complete, a degree in Criminal Justice will certainly be an advantage moving forward. In any type of academic, one must identify different learning styles in order to properly retain the information presented in a course. This will help to prepare for different methods of teaching and how to represent information in a way that will be most effectively understood. According to Felder and Soloman “active learners tend to retain and understand information best by doing something active with it.” (Felder & Soloman, n.d., para. 1) I have always found this to be the best way for me to learn and retain information. Although I have established that this was the best way that I learn, the NC State learning style inventory revealed that I was more of a sensing and visual learner. Furthermore, upon completion of the Penn State inventory I was shown to have characteristics of an auditory and visual learner. When the results were presented to...

...What is a learning style? A learning style is based on the person and how they take in information. Every one of us are place in a few different categories, such as, visual, aural, verbal, physical, logical, social, and solitary. After taken two tests I was placed in three categories, aural, solitary, and visual learning style. I don’t agree with most of the information that was provided but I did a little insight on how we as individuals learn. A visual style of learning is based on images, colors, maps and communicating with others. Also, aural learning style is working with sound or music. Solitary is being more private or independent. Overall, the article did shed some light on a few things that I do in life, past and present. In the article: attributeadvanogy.com, (2009), stated that I have an aural and solitary learning style. Based on the results of the test I scored the highest in solitary learning style which is intrapersonal. Solitary learning style means that I prefer to work alone and self-study. I find it very interesting because I am a very private person. Based on past relationships and friendships I find it hard to trust people. Beside my close family members I have no friends because I find it hard for me to open up to people. Also, a solitary learner is an independent person which that is me. I plan on opening up a group home for abuse children or a safe haven for foster children. ...

...Learning with Style: Defining Yourself as a Student Mark LeCouter COLL100 American Public University System Heidi McNally Learning with Style: Defining Yourself as a Student Many students have a certain way of learning that comes easiest to them but may not know how to identify and use it to their educational advantage. Some may have trouble with lectures while others may have trouble remembering diagrams. So in theory, whichever learning technique suits you, that undoubtedly is your learning style. I personally believe this to be true. Growing up as mostly a visual but also auditory learner, it made most classes easier to excel in than other students. On another hand, it made the classes that focused more on reading assignments or written instruction much more difficult. If those learning styles were identified earlier in life, it would have affected my studying habits and support foundation leading to a higher success rate in the classes where I struggled. The way a student learns also defines them as a person and has a strong influence on their personality, character, and morals. Students should embrace their learning style but also find ways to strengthen their weaknesses to enhance their overall learning ability. According to the Learning Styles Inventory from The Center for New Discoveries in Learning, visual learning suits me best (The Center for New Discoveries in Learning, 2012). Seeing pictures or a movie in your mind to recall certain...

...Developing Academic Competencies Essay Title: “Reflection on your learning in Semester 1” Submitted by Wayne Kenny Student Number: 11271868 Lecturer: Oonagh Sweeney Submission Date: 16th March 2012 Word count: 1,544 Introduction Learning is further developing the skills and knowledge you have already bringing with it the opportunity to acquire new skills and gain more knowledge. The way in which one person learns can differ from one to the next as we experienced in semester 1. When we got together as a class to discuss how we prepared for assignments and exams we discovered many different approaches, the student’s opinions of what was best practice varied from student to student. Part A Learning Style This was the first time I had looked at different learning styles as thought to define them in a group or category i.e. Visual, Auditory, Reading & Writing and Kinaesthetic learners. I wasn’t sure what category I fell into and if known was going to even benefit me in anyway. In order to understand the first exercise I needed to do was reflect on my prior learning experience of semester 1 to help me understand my own preferred learning style. It became clear as to why this exercise was beneficial to me as a student; I started to understand what style suited me best and as equally important what style I didn’t using when learning. The definition of a learning style is described by (McMillan and Wayers, 2007) as the way an individual...
