Lens of Hunger Games

In The Hunger Games there is a constant battle between life and death. There are twelve separate districts, in other words states, and a place called the Capital. These places make up their country known as Phanem. Every year there is an event called the Hunger Games that take place in the Capital. For the game, there is a boy and a girl from each district that represent their own district. Each of them trains and represents themselves to the people living in the Capital for a week, and then fight and kill all of the other tributes from every other district. The last person, whether it is a boy or a girl, wins the game. Phanem has the Hunger Games to scare all of the districts into never having another war and to never rebel against the Capital ever again. During the selection process in District Twelve, called the reaping, a little girl named Prim gets called for District Twelve’s tribute. Her older sister, Katniss, did not want her little sister to get killed in the games, so she volunteered as the tribute and got sent in for her. After going through the pre-game activities, Katniss was thrown into the game to fight for her life. Through all of the tough and unbelievable circumstances that she was put through, she battled her way to the end of the games until she was standing with Petea, the other tribute from District Twelve, and threatened the Capital’s power by standing up to them. Katniss and Peeta held poisonous berries and were going to eat them so they can die together to defeat the purpose of the games, and when doing this the game leader decided that they could both win the games (The Hunger Games, 2012).
When assessing Gender Women’s Studies in the The Hunger Games one would examine the consequences of gender and address the norms of gender, race, and class of people. Also, another way to say this is, seeing if who we are puts us at an advantage or disadvantage to have any kind of power. There is a different kind of depiction of the main girl character, Katness. Instead of Katness being portrayed as the sex kitten or a looking for love character, she is shown as having more manly characteristics. The movie shows this by making Katniss hunt, wear dark manly clothes, boots and show her as a very aggressive person (The Hunger Games, 2012). By having her portray manly ways and having her as a powerful figure, this also shows that women can only have power when they act like men. Even though this is a false representation of women, at least there is a woman in a film that is not shown as a sex figure. There is actually a part in the movie where the Capital’s Glam Squad for Katness changes her and makes her feel like she lost her power. They take her and wax her whole body, bathe her, do her hair, and makeup because they want to present her in a feminine way in front of the members of the Capital so Katness complies to women in her society. She makes the comment, “So you’re here to make me look pretty” right when she sees her glam squad (The Hunger Games, 2012). Even though Katness is shown as a tough girl in the movie, there is many times that the people in the Capital try to change her to appeal to their people so she would be supported more in the games. This shows how a woman that follow all of the norms and expectations of being a stereotypical woman it will make her more powerful.
During The Hunger Games there are many parts that followed the pattern of certain groups having power throughout the whole film. One part in particular was just the overall concept of the Hunger Games. The Capital was obviously the hierarchy and the twelve districts were also categorized into hierarchical groups within themselves. The viewer can see that power and wealth goes from highest to lowest when moving from District One to District Twelve. The Capital does not have to participate in the games; rather they actually watch it for enjoyment and entertainment. They also have more than enough food, water, clothes, and money while most of the districts struggle to survive and often die of starvation. This shows that all of the power lies within the Capital as it serves as the group with the most wealth and power (The Hunger Games, 2012). One specific scene that shows this is when Katness was showing her talent to the game leader. She came in and they did not even pay attention to her because she was from District Twelve, the most powerless district. When they continued to not pay attention to her, she shoots her arrow into the apple in the pig’s mouth that the game leader was eating. After this she said, “Thanks for your consideration” (The Hunger Games, 2012). By Katniss saying this, it shows that even she notices the social divide between the Capital and her district. There is a special grouping/divide of power throughout the film that is very important in how the Capital keeps power over the districts.
The difference between the power of groups and women in this film are eye opening and obvious, as there were many examples not even mentioned that can relate to Gender Women’s Studies and Sociology. We went into depth for these two lenses because there is not one way to define power and there is always a depiction of power presented in film.

...Read the selection and answer the questions that follow. From “The Most Dangerous Game” – Richard Connell (In this short story, the protagonist Rainsford (a celebrated hunter) falls overboard from a yacht that is sailing through the Caribbean Sea. He manages to swim to a nearby island where walks to a large mansion and meets General Zaroff, and his servant Ivan, who make a past time of hunting human men on the island. As a game, Zaroff gives each man minimal supplies and the opportunity to evade him for 3 days. If he cannot find and kill the man by the end of the third day, then he allows the man to leave the island. It is the end of the third day and Rainsford has managed so far to evade Zaroff, but now he is closing in on him…) “At daybreak Rainsford, lying near the swamp, was awakened by the sound that made him know that he had new things to learn about fear. It was a distant sound, faint and wavering, but he knew it. It was the baying of a pack of hounds. Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was and wait. That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable. For a moment he stood there, thinking. An idea that held a wild chance came to him, and, tightening his belt, he headed away from the swamp. The baying of the hounds grew nearer, nearer, ever nearer. On a ridge Rainsford climbed a tree. Down a watercourse, not a quarter of a mile off, he could see the bush moving. Straining his eyes, he saw the lean figure...

Value of Literature

...The Value of Literature Literature can be used to place value on a wide span of topics. From books that may break our hearts to one’s that make us laugh uncontrollably. Even though literature is only written in words, it is our imagination that makes those words come to reality, by the way we see the words in our imaginations. Whatever literature that is read, it is in the perspective of the author and you are reading through the lens of the writer. Philip Marchand said “Not to understand the disposition of things is the fate of children or slaves. Imaginative literature is the race's best tool for acquiring such understanding. This is the childishness and slavishness in the soul of someone who cannot respond to great literature.” Marchand talks about how our imagination is one of the most important tools that an individual can have. Ultimately, with the way literature uses up the creativity side of the brain, it truly helps expand our imagination. From a very young age, many of us were introduced to books with big pictures and little words. These simple little books were meant to teach us the names of colours, the alphabet and what noise animals made. While continuing to grow older, individuals starts to explore more genres of literature to find what they enjoy. For example, in the last couple years of high school, I have really gotten into the horror/mystery genres of book which is the reason I chose The Shining as my ISU novel. The fact that I had read The Shining before...

New England Patriots

...Assignment 2 – Final Project 1. Please explain the similarities and differences between the framework of the Leadership Challenge (A1) and How NASA Builds TEAMS (A2)? Please use as example the Case Study: New England PATRIOTS: Making the Team. Use your creativity. Model the way is the first of the five practices of exemplary leadership. In this practice, a leader needs to ensure that their audience understands and believes in something strongly. Leaders are expected to speak on and stand for matters of conscience and value to the organization. In order to do this, a leader needs to Find Their Voice. In other words, the leader needs to discover what they are passionate about. This practice is analogues to the Express Authentic Appreciation behavior in NASA’s 4-D team building methodology. In order to be able to express authentic appreciation towards their audience, a leader needs to be in tune with what drives the members of his audience. Listening to the audience, asking clarifying questions, and expressing expectations can accomplish this. The second subcomponent of model the way is Affirm Shared Values. This subcomponent is vital to the success of any team, group, or organization because as individuals, we each have different motivators, but if we share core values then building quality relationships can be accomplished. Address Shared Values is the 4-D behavior that when practiced aids in building strong and genuine relationships, which is a fundamental element...

Personal Narrative: The Greek Gods

...afraid of how much I thought about the photo that night "will there ever be a light at the end of the tunnel?" I had a melancholy heart, no sensation in my bones, and a hunger for relief. I was a troubled child with no motives and nothing to love. I no longer had wanted to live, live with the fact that I couldn’t feel a dam thing but sadness. The next morning I looked at the same page trying to analyze who this person had been. There was no name and only a picture of a dark room with a shadow of a man’s face. I wrote to this mysterious man behind the camera lens asking about his work and where the picture was taken. “Would you like me to take you there some time, you’re Sandi right?" I was skeptical right then until I had realized that this man or boy had went to my school. There was pictures of the schools hall way and of people I've seen in other classes. "What’s your name" I asked completely ignoring his offer. "Roger..." I swear nothing was ever the same since. It was like he had forgotten about that day he sat on my seat and spoke to me rudely. It was like I had forgotten as well. Day after day he'd write to me and showed me new photos he had taken. I was so interested in his work I didn’t even ask him why he had disappeared from school. It was baseball season now and I wasn’t watching any of the games on TV. I was lying on my bed listening to my record albums and my room slightly a mess. I had exchanged numbers with Roger two weeks ago and had been texting since. It was...

...The Sony Corporation: A Case Study in Transnational Media Management by Richard A. Gershon, Western Michigan University, U.S.A. and Tsutomu Kanayama, Sophia University, Japan The transnational corporation is a nationally based company with overseas operations in two or more countries. What distinguishes the transnational media corporation (TNMC) from other types of TNCs, is that the principle product being sold is information and entertainment. The following paper is a case study analysis of the Sony Corporation; a leading TNMC in the production and sale of consumer electronics, music and film entertainment and videogame technology. There are two main parts to this study. Part I. examines the history and development of the Sony Corporation. It builds on the theoretical work of Schein, (1984, 1983), Morley, Shockley-Zalabak (1991) and Gershon (2002, 1997) who argue that the business strategies and corporate culture of a company are often a direct reflection of the person (or persons) who were responsible for developing the organization and its business mission. Second Part examines the Sony Corporation from the standpoint of business strategy. Special attention is given to the subject of organizational culture and strategic decision-making. A second argu- ment of this paper is that while Sony is a TNMC, the organization is decidedly Japanese in its business values. This is beginning to change in the face of global competition and the need to improve business performance. This...

Remarkable Creatures Essay

...The Remarkable Tale of Mary Anning: An Analysis of Remarkable Creatures and its Merit as Historical Fiction Novels can do more that simply tell stories. Novels can enhance or emphasize thoughts and ideas. They can excite a wide variety of emotions. They can be the product of imagination, or they can be influenced by historical fact. Whether or not the events in a novel are true is left entirely up to the author, but it is truly an incredible feat to take a piece of history and turn it into a work of fiction that is plausible and logical. For our Senior Seminar, we have studied the aspects of fiction that have a basis in historical fact. They do so by applying certain literary devices that are necessary to the historical fiction genre. The novel I chose to research and present on is entitled Remarkable Creatures, by Tracy Chevalier, author of Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Last Runaway. This work of historical fiction tells the story of Mary Anning, one of the first recognized female paleontologists whose discoveries changed many views on the world and how it began. Remarkable Creatures is a biographical novel, as it concentrates on the experiences that Mary Anning had during her lifetime, the people she meets, and the incidents that occur in her life. This essay will evaluate Chevalier’s work on the basis of its merit as historical fiction. Remarkable Creatures belongs in this category because it Chevalier implements the critical terms of the genre in numerous and intricate...

A. * The title is a pun or is having a go at the generals. * Generals die in bed while the soldiers die on the front lines. * Generals don’t fight. Instead they command soldiers from a safe distance behind the frontlines * The title suggests that there is a total lack of respect for generals or for people in positions of power/ authority. If this happens in war then there is a breakdown in the chain of command, therefore making it difficult to win the war itself.
