...Save the environment Many people who use computers whether it's for their home or business are moving toward a "paperless" office. Individuals are becoming overwhelmed by scraps of paper, and unorganized file folders, we are simply looking for ways to reduce clutter. Many organizations and institutions have at least made a partial move to a paperless office. They are doing so by; using scanners instead of copying machines, sending electronic faxes instead of paper faxes, and storing information electronically instead of in filing cabinets. It would be a myth if most people believed it was possible to go completely "paperless". Technology is available now to make a paperless office a reality, but it will require a cultural change and a change in work habits to be fully realized. There are numerous obstacles and attitudes which needs to change, prior to your home office or business can go green. One major obstacle is ensuring that your files are properly backed up. In the past, we would typically make a photocopy of a document and place it in a folder so that it can be easily retrieved from a filing cabinet. Now, many businesses have developed an electronic filing system utilizing software such as Microsoft Word, or even customized programs for storing documents. Unfortunately, those files can't just be created; they are required to be backed up as well. There are numerous solutions on the market which can assist individuals and corporations to safely backup...

...Summary of documentations on paper recycling In Japan, the US, Europe and China Recycling benefits the environment much more than other waste management methods (Technical University of Denmark and the Danish Topic Centre on Waste and Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), 2006). With the environmental, economic and societal benefits, we can conclude that building an effective paper recycling system in China would be a good idea. This paper is a basic summary of paper recycling practices in Japan, the US and Europe. It is intended to be a reference for drawing up an appropriate and practical plan for school and office paper recycling projects in China. Paper Recycling Statistics Japan has an extraordinary reputation in paper recycling because of its refined and effective paper recycling system. While the volume of recovered paper grew in the 1980s, the paper recycling rate went through a stagnant period before the rate started to rise rapidly in 1997. Japan’s paper recycling rate reached 77.9% in 2011, but the volume was 21.5 million tons, which is less than the 22.7 million tons recycled in 2008, due to less consumption of paper(Paper recycling in Japan, 2012). According to the 2012 sustainability report of American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), the U.S. achieved a paper recycling rate of 66.8% (about 46 million tons of paper) in 2011, which was nearly twice the 1990 rate. In addition, the goal of the AF&PA’s “sustainability initiative - Better...

...Sexism in the Political Arena: How Gender Alters Political Representation Sarah Moore University of Pittsburgh Abstract: This paper explores the topics of sexism in politics- more specifically, how the underrepresentation of women has resulted both from differences in the genders (internal/psychological variances), and also circumstances that exist in the current political climate. It is important to note that there are two different sources of this problem, if not more. Internal characteristics that lead to the underrepresentation of women include how they perceive their environment compared to men, the fact that women believe they are less qualified than men, and that they are less competitive in a political environment than their male counterparts. In the external sphere, this paper examines how the facts that women partake in more household activities than their male spouses do and that they are less likely to receive political nominations from any of their peers affects their likelihood of campaigning for office. Sexism in the Political Arena: How Gender Alters Political Representation Since the birth of the American political system in 1789, the question of representation has always been one of the most significant topics in political discourse. This According to Gail Baitinger, Jennifer Lawless, and Richard Fox, “when the 111th Congress convened in January 2009, 83% of its members were men. Men occupy the governor’s...

...OFFICE TECHNOLOGIES REPORT 1 TERMS OF REFERENCE The company has not updated its software of hardware or software in 7 years. The company is expanding and desperately needs updating. As the company s getting bigger, problems have raised within the organisation. The company will struggle if it keeps the current software/hardware and continues to expand. In this report I will discuss issues regarding software and hardware and I will give my recommendations. This Report will be submitted on 24 October 2011 2 PROCEDURE 2.1 The project was discussed and explained by Linda White on 3 October 2011. 2.2 A deadline date was agreed for 24 October 2011. 2.3 I looked up lots of hardware and software on the internet and in catalogues. 2.4 Computer hardware and software were analysed and compared before choosing a suitable update for the currents equipment. 3 FINDINGS 3.1 Floppy disks were used to save spreadsheets. Floppy disks are not big enough to save spreadsheets and are not commonly used anymore; most laptops/computers don’t have them built in anymore although you can buy an external one. The company would need many floppy disks to save spreadsheets and they would take up a lot of space. Floppy disks are easily broken by dust or dirt. 3.2 Many files/records were duplicated because the older software did not support filter or sort. This could waste a lot of time and use up valuable space. Allowing duplicates allows more space for...

...Assessment 1 Develop workplace sustainability Questions What are the sustainability issues? Unsustainable activities have led to changes in our environment, or have been identified as having the potential to lead to future changes. The types of changes that are occurring or are predicted to occur form the key issues for sustainability. The following Table 1 provides a summary of the key issues. They are related to changes to the physical and cultural (being the way we live) environments, which in turn relate to the economic environment. What does sustainability mean? Every day we hear the term ‘sustainable’ or ‘sustainability’ being used to describe a large number of issues and news items. There is the ‘sustainable economy’, ‘sustainable agriculture’, ‘economically sustainable’, ‘the need to be sustainable’, ‘sustainable work practices’ and ‘sustainable water supply’ to name a few. The Brundtland Report, Our Common Future, is seen by many as one of the first global reports to address sustainable development. This report defined sustainable development as: “…development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Brundtland (1987) National strategy for ecologically sustainable development Sustainable Development is defined by the Australian Government’s National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development as: “…using, conserving and enhancing the community’s resources...

... HCS/320 Communication Theory Communication is the exchange of ideas and/or information. There are many ways that people can communicate with one another. Different types of communication can include body language, verbal communication, and written communication. An individual working in a law office needs to demonstrate the ability to communicate with co-workers and clients effectively in many different ways. An important aspect of communication is the ability to interact with a variety of people. According to du Pré, (2005), attempting a conversation with someone who does not understand you is not productive. Legal fees are expensive and usually billed by the hour, which makes effective communication between the law office and the client all the more important. A client is not going to hire a law office that does not communicate efficiently. Most client communications are written. Written communication provides a paper trail for the law office to keep track of what was said and when it was said. This type of communication is helpful for example; an attorney would need to reference information relayed to the client. Office managers generally will also write most communications between management and staff, again providing documentation of the information delivered. Co-workers utilize face-to-face communication, telephones, and electronic mail for internal communications amongst themselves. While communicating with co-workers and clients...

...introduce one of the essential environmentally friendly—going green in our workplace. The basic concepts for performing the movements of environmentally friendly in workplace are reuse, reduce, and recycle. The biggest waste in office is the paper waste. There is a statistic showed, 71.6 million tons of paper which up to 40% of total waste produced in the U.S having been wasted each year (statspotting.com, 2012). If we can flip the paper for reusing the blank parts to write or to be printed, it will reduce more than 20 million tons of paper waste. Finally, collect those papers could save more than 15% trees been cut. Next part for green in the workplace is controlling the electricity. Inside the office, we can change light switch into sensor switch. This kind of sensor will automatically turn off the light when there is no employee inside. There is another thing inside the office we have to pay much attention as well—the temperature adjustment. The most comfortable temperature is five more or less degrees of outside temperature. Controlling the temperature not only can save the electricity payment but also increase the life of air condition and heater. ...Allied Office Products Case Write-up Allied office products have two different divisions, each of these were treated as profit centers. One of them is the Form Manufacturing division, which basically involved with producing business forms and specialty paper products. The other one is Total Forms Control activity division, which is a program of business forms inventory management services. The industry value chain is: TreesPulpPaperForms manufacturing Forms salesTFC Customer Purchasing Manager Customer receiving Forms end users The TCF chain is: Storage and inventory financing Requisitioning Stock selection and pick-pack Order entry—billing Desk top delivery Freight In terms of the profitability performance, the Business Forms Division in 1988 earned a 20 percent ROI, but returns have been dropping for several years. In 1992, Allied Office Products has annual sales of $900 million and sales from TFC were only about $60 million. ...Computer Based Medical Records Abstract In the medical field there have been a lot of technological advances and making health records electronic is one of them. The days of having a paper health record are almost obsolete. An electronic health record keeps a patient’s medical information and history on a computer which is accessible to more people in less time. I will explain how the continuity, communication, coordination and accountability of the electronic health record can help the medical office. I will explain what can be included in the electronic health record. As an advocate of the electronic health record I will also explain some disadvantages to the electronic system. Computer Based Medical Records Electronic health records are taking over the paper medical records in doctors’ offices and hospitals everywhere. Electronic health records will help physicians with the continuity of care of their patients. The communication between different doctors and hospitals and also within the office is much faster and easier. Coordinating the electronic health record is much easier.
