...------------------------------------------------- Live Like a Dog, Alone. 1. Give a summary of Live Like a Dog, Alone. ‘’Live Like a Dog’’ is a story that takes place in a cab in the middle of London. In this cab we meet two persons with very different opinions on how to observe life. We meet the cabdriver who is a refugee and Miriam who is a fifty-five year old stressed British woman. The cabdriver admits that he is as lonely as a dog, but Miriam tries to cheer him up. Miriam had just been picked up at the hospital. She suffers from heart attacks because of her stress and work. As we gets deeper into the mind of Miriam, we get to know the true story of her. She is lonely just like the cabdriver and that is why she decides to offer him a cup of coffee and see where it will lead. Despite the fact that she has an idea about it. 2. Characterize Miriam and the life she lives. Miriam as person can be described quite accurate with two quotes: * ‘’Thoughts are the shadows of our feelings – always darker, emptier and simpler.’’ (Friedrich Nietzsche) * ‘’Do not give in too much to feelings – A overly sensitive heart is an unhappy possession on this shaky earth.’’ (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) The reason why this describes Miriam quite well is because of the fact that she has two sides. She has the confident and positive side and the more darken, lonely side. When in public, she tries to show the positive way of living and actually tries to make it better to...

...Live Like a Dog, Alone By Fay Weldon. Summary. It is about two persons, who both live alone. The woman Miriam is fifty-five years old and lives alone. She is running a successful nursing agency. She suffers from heart trouble, so sometimes she has to go to the hospital. The story takes place inside a taxi. Miriam is on her way home after a visit at the hospital. The taxi driver and Miriam talks. It is not a normal conversation between a driver and his costumer, but instead they talk about their personal life. He seems depressed and unhappy with his life. He tells Miriam how he feels about living alone and his thoughts about it collides with the way Miriam feels. During the ride, they both get aware of their different perspectives on their, in some point, similar life. That does somehow widen their horizons, and gives them a new awareness about the way they live. Miriam and the way she lives Miriam is fifty-five years old and lives alone, with no husband and children. She has been married once, but they did not have any children. She has a great career, within stress. Ironically, she is very stressed herself. That affects that she has to go to the hospital where her heart is stopped and then started over again, and that happens a lot. I think that she basically is happy about her life, even though she lives alone. Miriam is also an extremely caring person who needs to make sure that everybody is happy and satisfied, as you can see in the text "She felt duty-bound...

Why or how was the thought of using dogs in labor a good idea in the first place? It all leads to one simple statement, because dogs, k-nines if you will have the ability to do them. If you think about it people are able to do many things for example being able to build things, being able to process information at a higher velocity but are we built to last in the cold or anything outside our usual environment? That’s mainly how dogs came into the picture, they are animals known to live in the cold, being able to survive, travel far distances than a person because it is in their nature due to the environment that they were born into. ...narrator of this novel. David Lurie is a 52 year old divorced man, who lives in Cape Town, South Africa, as a respected romantic poetry professor at a university. His life is full of sexual, non-committed relationships. After being accused of inappropriate behavior with a student, Lurie loses his job at the university and must move in with his daughter, Lucy, in the country. Throughout the novel we see many references to animals, especially in relation to Lurie. Because he is the narrator of the novel, these animal references lead the reader to believe Lurie is describing himself through these animals. Lurie uses descriptions of animals as a way to describe how he feels about himself. We see Lurie go from a sexually charged predator, to a strange beast who has been hunter, to a dog-man, and then finally to a helpless dog who is ready to be put out of his misery. David Lurie is a predator at the beginning of the novel. He is a man searching for sex, and for the most part he is successful at it. His first sexual interest he introduces us to is Soraya, a prostitute who he has been going to see for a long time. Lurie describes them having sex by comparing them to snakes engaged in intercourse, "lengthy, absorbed, but rather abstract, rather dry, even at its hottest" (Coetzee 5 ). Being the narrator, this shows the reader how David views himself, as well as Soraya, as cold, scary, almost evil, creatures, like snakes. Snakes give off a very negative emotion because they are dangerous...

...the characters become animal-like characters. It also reflects the struggles that they go through in the post-colonial era. Animals are significant in the novel Disgrace become metaphorical to the people in the novel and how their situations that they find themselves in change them to become the animals. A certain situation can make them result into a certain animal, but they also change from one animal to another animal, depending on what curve ball life troughs at them. According to Patton (2009) it is clear that from the beginning of the novel David Lurie has a strong distinction between humans and animals. He believes that “We are from different order of creation from the animals.” (Coetzee: 1999, 74). Humans are not equal to animals in any way, humans have a soul that is not bound to them, before we are born we were already a soul, and when a person dies his soul leaves his body, where as an animal’s “souls are tied to their bodies and die with them.” (Coetzee, 1999, 78).David believes that animals do not have a proper soul, but his seeing changes and by the end of the novel, he finds that humans are equal to animals. He is in the room, the room where he and Bev organize the death of the animals, and David comes to a realisation and he thinks to himself “here the soul is yanked out of the body…” (Coetzee: 1999, 219). According to Meier (2006): David Lurie explains in the beginning of the novel that his sexual intercourse with Soraya is like snakes, which can be seen as...

...whether it is for an animal or family member. A Dog's Death talks about the death of a dog. They were not sure as to what had happened with the dog, they think that he may have been kicked or brushed by a car. They took the dog to the vet and the autopsy showed that she had a rupture in her liver. The dog had apparently been young and just learning to go potty on the newspaper. They tried to take the dog to the vet the next morning and in the car ride, she tried to bit her owner and had tied. The dog was only learning to live and yet she was already dying. The last act this dog had made was try and hide the diarrhea she didn't have any control over, she covered it with her newspaper. What I found very intriguing about this poem, is that the dog was treated as if it were one of the family members. It is evident that the family who owned the dog, had no idea what had happened, but you can almost feel their pain (Sherwood, 2001). And that is exactly how the author wants you to feel. I can tell that the author wanted me to feel empathy for the family's loss. I felt myself really connecting to this story because, we owned a husky and we had to put him down because he was getting so old, he couldn't control his bladder anymore. The themes that they used in this poem was Love and Grief. Love, for the dog, because it was so young and had so much ahead of it's precious life, and it's life was cut, just like that. Grief is something the was portrayed very well in this poem. You can't help but...

...Dogs are those kinds of animals who have supernatural ability to determine if we feel sad or stress, happy or angry, and instead of staying away from it or ignore it, they look more attracted to it. Dogs do not keep notes and they are good listeners, and they help humans in many ways that humans themselves fail to do so. Dogs have the ability to connect to humans on emotional and spiritual levels. Now we can find dogs in everywhere, in hospitals, airports, police departments and schools, and they refer to us as service dogs. Comfort dogs and search and rescue dogs are two kinds of service dogs that I will write about, and I will focus on three main points in my discussion which is the differences and similarities between these two kinds, the purpose of each one them, the importance of the job for both of them....

...call by a mother and her son, they have a dog that he needs to shoot. His reaction to the suffering dog or absence of it towards the ending of the story raises the themes, stagnation, indifference and emotional absence in one’s own life. The main character’s life are at still. When you read the text one of the first thing you notice is the narrative view the effect of it. Written in second person, present tense, and it’s like the police officer are the narrator of the story. When he is refering to himself as ”you” it has the same effect if it was told in third person. You have the feeling that it’s a stamp on how life is if you walked in his shoes, and everybody else whould feel the same: monotous. At the same time there is a feeling that the story is written in spoken language. And that contributes to the point of view that he is the narrator ”was toward the end of your shift” When he faces the music to kill the dog, he isn’t trown away by it, he is always aware what goes around him ”she’ll asked if you’d like some water or lemonade” He insn’t touched by the whole situation like many others would be in simillar situation and looking on a sad and grieving mother ans son. But still he in respect he emulates interrest “God knows you don't mean to try to chatter this kid into feeling better, but when he turns, you press your lips into a line and smile and ask him what her name is." So when it comes to killing the dog the officer takes a stand "You bend at...
