Love is Hard to Find in L.A.
After reading Love in LA and A Food Man is Hard to Find, it becomes clear at first that the stories are very different, though, with a deeper look you can start to see a few subtle similarities. Love in LA tells the story of a young man named Jake, who ironically only seems to love himself. Jake has a very brief encounter with a woman named Marina after the two have a fender-bender while navigating through LA traffic. A Good Man is Hard to Find tells the story of a family that is going on vacation which goes horribly awry after what seems to be a major accident, and the ironic run-in with the worst man possible known as “The Misfit”.
Characters and Their Morals
In “Love in LA”, every step of the way it seems that Jake’s decisions were all selfish and inconsiderate. From giving fake information after the accident to claiming to have “been in a few movies” in hopes of getting a phone number, it is apparent that Jake’s outlook on life is heavily revolved around his own well-being without the consideration of others. We are given very little information about Marina’s point of view on things. She is portrayed as innocent and even considerate when she talks about her dad being disappointed if she didn’t report the accident. Her final words make her seem almost gullible for falling for Jake’s charm when she says “call me” before departing.
In “A good Man is Hard to Find” the main character is the grandmother of the family. In the first page of the story she can be seeing trying to manipulate the family into going to her choice of vacation by using newspaper article about The Misfit saying, “You don’t even want to hear the things he has done” which leads me to believe that like Jake In “Love in LA”, she is also a little selfish. The children and the baby, filled the roles of children perfectly, with no filter for politeness and doing

Litr201Literature: a Reflection of Life

...LITR201Literature: A Reflection of Life Phase 1 Individual Project Short Stories Prof. Lambert Colorado Technical University Gayla Burow Comparison Contrast Essay of Short Stories This paper is to analysis two short stories “A Good Man is hard to find” and “Love in LA”. Both of these stories have some common similarities, however, seem to be different eras in time. It seems that both were summer when the stories took place, both mention too of course be on a highway at some point in the stories. In both of the stories, there are accidents, one being much harsher than the other, one being a fender bender the other left the family bleeding with broken bones. I felt that most of the characters seemed to be very selfish with only thoughts of themselves. The setting for Love in La is Jake daydreaming about a better car than the one he owns and is why he hits the other character in the stories in the first place. The setting in “A Good Man is Hard” to find, takes place in Georgia mostly told through the grandmother's eyes. It seems she wants to go to Tennessee and her son wanted to go to Florida. She did not get her way even with all the whining about the misfits on the loose. After the cat causes a car crash the family comes across the Misfits, and the grandmother seems to use her faith to save herself and her family from death Characters Jake seems to be a very lazy self-centered nature, he is most defiantly a protagonist in this story. Jake is a dishonest man...

Viva La Vida

...Viva la Vida! by Frida Kahlo Introduction Painting has always been a way for artists to display the reality in which they live, regardless of whether it is an inner reality, consisting of personal experiences, emotions and feelings, or external reality formed by other people, animals, nature, or other thing. Frida Kahlo is an artist whose work is the result of a reflection of her inner reality, woven from her feelings and emotions. The pain and suffering, which she endured in her life, not only hardened her character, but also largely determined the features of her work. Frida Kahlo's creativity is unique due to the fact that it reflects not only the unique life story of the artist, full of mental and physical sufferings, but also demonstrates the spiritual qualities of Frida, such as fortitude, endurance, willingness to fight for life. For this reason, the study of the creativity of the Mexican artist involves an appeal to the facts of her biography. It helps to understand and grasp the specifics of her creations, each of which is capable to communicate with the audience in the language of love, suffering, and hopes of life. In this paper, one of my favorite artworks, namely Viva la Vida! (1954) by Frida Kahlo in connection with the life of the artist will be analyzed. The Facts from the Biography of Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo (1907-1953) is known worldwide as one of the most dramatic figures in the history of art: at the age of 18 she got in a terrible car accident that...

Into Thin Air

...Place Academy “And the 2013 state runner up is…La Salle Academy”. My entire senior year, award ceremonies always seemed to turn out that way. It was the running joke of our senior class; we had taken on the title of Second Place Academy. First place kept escaping our sports team’s grasps, including my own. As a cheerleader and avid sports fan, I attended basically every game, match, and meet during my senior year. That year some of the recipients of those second place medals included the hockey team, cheerleaders, boys soccer, boys basketball, girls lacrosse, volleyball, gymnastics, football, and so on. Through the tears, disappointment and many upsets, I learned bitter sweetly how much my high school community really means to me. La Salle Academy is a large, private Catholic high school located in the heart of Providence, Rhode Island. We are known for our sports, our arts, and of course the education you receive while in private school. With private schools, come a variety of unwanted factors. One is the hate you receive from public school students, I learned quickly that it doesn’t matter who you are, and they just love to see you fail. Another is the rich group of students who have all been friends since kindergarten, and have climbed the ladder of private schools together. This group’s bubble is almost impossible to break into. Now, don’t get me wrong I learned to love this school. I transferred from a public school La Salle after my freshman year, and this was anything...

The Cross and the Sword

...World: Bartolomé De Las Casas and Hernán Cortés 1). How would you compare Las Casa’s and Cortés’s attitude about Native Americans, their cultures, and their conversion to Christianity? What assumptions shaped their conclusions? Which sources are the most revealing of those attitudes and assumptions? Hernán Cortès felt that the Natives intelligence was far greater than those of the islands and that they provided sufficient intelligence to conduct themselves as reasonable beings. By proviong themselves intelligent, Cortès found it very important to compel them to serve the Spaniards in the same way the Natives in the Islands. Cortès believed that the conquerors and settlers would not be able to maintain themselves. He believed in increasing his Majesties revenues rather than diminish them after the long battles against the natives and the hardships and loss they may have been put to. Las Casas attitude was the opposite as he tried many things to end the Encomiendas system. In 1510, Las Casa had no disagreements with the mistreatment of the Indians until 1512, when he joined an expedition led by Diego Velásquez and witnessed the slaughter of the Indians. The turning point came when he was preparing a sermon after discussing with some Dominicans who shared the same concerns. As he read through the bible he stumbled across a passage that he couldn’t let go of and it read, “Tainted his gifts who offers in sacrifice ill-gotten goods.” After reading that, Las Casas determined that...

Hotel-Mngement

...Hotels I Love: Rosewood Mayakoba, Mexico Larry Olmsted ,    CONTRIBUTOR I travel to learn, eat, golf and ski, but mostly for travel’s sake   Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. I firmly believe that Mexico’s Riviera Maya (or Mayan Riviera), is one of the world’s great travel destinations. I have been to the region many times, and stayed in a lot of different resorts, and I think the best luxury hotel is the Rosewood Mayakoba. For readers unfamiliar with this recurring column, here is the three sentence lowdown: I travel a great deal and stay in many exceptional hotels worldwide, but only the very best make the cut for Hotels I Love. In almost every case these are properties I have visited multiple times over a period of years, so I know great service was not a fluke. It’s not “Hotels I Like,” or even “Hotels I Really Like,” and I only manage to find a few each year that qualify – they have to be that good. With most of the country caught in an exceptionally bitter winter of much lower than normal temperatures and storm after storm, sunny Mexico has never looked better. But the Riviera Maya, on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, is especially appealing, and truly offers something for every taste. This 80-mile stretch of gorgeous coastline is situated immediately south of the excellent and easy to reach Cancun airport, away from often tacky Cancun itself, stretching south to the world famous ancient ruins of Tulum – the only Mayan city built on...

Love in the Time of Visitors Study

...mercoledì scendo dalla circum e sono determinata: oggi finalizziamo la bozza del questionario! Sì si! E poi subito lo traduciamo. Inglese, francese, spagnolo e – perché no – pure tedesco.

French Affair with London

...The French love affair with London Will the British and the French ever understand each other? “Rosbifs” are well known as the discoverer of binge drinking, they are awful cook and hypocritical. On the other side of the Channel, the “Froggies” are uppity, unclean and always on strike. Both keep clichés going and issues of dispute are not lacking as the debate between Sarkozy and Cameron at one of the last European convention demonstrated. Jean Guiffan has supported in Histoire de l’anglophonie en France (2004) that almost 15% of the French people declared not to trust their neighbours across the Channel. On the other hand, they demonstrate respect for each other when they walked hand-in-hand through les Champs-Elysées to celebrate the centenary of the Entente Cordiale in 2004. Part of our common history would make us think that French and English people do not get along but the French community in London is one of the most extensive and well established around Great Britain. At first sight, some cultural differences may simply be too wide to bridge. It is not easy to ignore the ancient rivalry when the station of the Eurostar in London is called Waterloo. William the Conqueror, Jean of Arc, the Hundred Years’ War, the Napoleonic Wars, and the race for colonies: from the cradle, French and English people feed their hard feelings. For example, “Son of British” was a common insult in Middle Ages in France (Zeldin, 2002). Anglophobia was an heirloom handed down from generation...
