Love The Doctor Analysis On November 3rd, 2013 I watched a production of Love the Doctor in the Black Box Theater at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Love the Doctor is a play by Tirso de Molina; it surrounds the story of a girl Dona Jeronima and how she becomes a doctor and finds love. Jeronima falls in love with a man whom does not realize she exists and then she makes it her mission to make him love her and also to become a doctor. For this production of Love the Doctor I believe that the playwright and creative team was trying to get across the fact that women should always feel empowered. The leading lady did not want to do either of the socially acceptable options for a lady during that time, marry a man that was picked for her or join a nunnery, she wanted to practice medicine. I really believe that this play was trying to show that it is possible to break the metaphorical glass ceiling that women encounter in the work force. The director of this production of Love the Doctor was Erin Freeman. Because I have never seen a different production of this particular play, I do not have anything to compare the particular directing style to. I believe that the director wanted the concept of this play to be that glass ceilings can be broken and that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to. This concept did make the play meaningful to me, being a female and completely understanding that there are “ceilings” in place that make it difficult or impossible to advance in the work force. There were many production elements in this play. The production team had very nice sets and costumes that were coordinated together very smoothly. The director’s use of the platform type set was varied nicely; it was used for a different place in each scene. The director used the entirety of the black box theatre, even having the actors run through and behind the audience. Even though it was the particular theater utilized and not the director I enjoyed the set up. The audience sat on the same floor that the “stage” was on, which really put us into the action. The pace of this play was very appropriate. Unlike Othello I was not checking my phone constantly to see the time, it flowed from scene to scene, and by the time intermission happened I was surprised it was time for it already. I do not think the director spent too much time on any aspect of the plot, yet she also did not spend too little time. Going along with this I believe that the audience enjoyed the pace also. As I mentioned above when it was time for intermission I, along with the rest of the audience, was surprised that it was already time. Overall I believe that the director did a very nice job leading this production. This production of Love the Doctor employed nine actors, two of which played multiple parts. The actors in this production did a very fine job at portraying their characters. The setting of this play was in Spain or its surrounding areas; therefore one would have expected accents to be used. This was not the case, the actors talked in their own voices, but still showed that the play was set in another country very well. The acting all of the actors produced was that of which I did not expect from university students; I expected something of the high school drama club variety, I was very surprised. The actors spoke clearly and showed all of their feelings truthfully really convincing me that I was watching this story in real life not on a stage in the Black Box Theater. One of the funny parts of this production was when Tello kept fighting the musician; the fighting seemed very real and seemed to draw in the audience even more. Thus I was completely able to suspend my disbelief during this performance. The design of this production was different that most I have viewed. There was one central set that stayed for the entire production and a group of benches that the actors moved according to what the next scene entailed. The central set was the structure with stairs that was used as mostly different houses. The bench was made up of multiple small benches that the characters would move as the scene changed, for example the bench was moved into the middle of the staging area to serve as a sort of courtyard during one scene. The sets really helped contribute to the world of the world of the play because, with them you did not have to imagine what the surrounding area was like, like one had to in Othello. Lighting just like in Othello was exposed to the audiences’ eyes, so it did not per se take away from the world of the play but it also did not add. All sound was provided by the character of the musician, he would play his guitar during the scenes, this added to the world of the play for me because it added a sense of warmth to the stage. All in all the world of the play was very real and like I said above it allowed me to suspend my disbelief nicely. My personal opinion of the production was that I really enjoyed it. I loved the plot and I found myself to be really invested in the affairs of the heart for Jeronima. I believe that the Black Box Theater was a smart place to house this production because of the warm feeling of the theater. The warm feeling of the theater coupled with the audience placed on the “stage” allowed for a more real suspension of disbelief than I experienced with the production of Othello. I would most definitely return to watch another production at this theater because; I loved the way that the audience felt as if they were a part of the action. I would also go and see another play written by Tirso de Molina. This is because Love the Doctor really captured my interest, and I want to see if any of his other plays entice me like that. Love the Doctor was by far a favorite among the plays that I have ever viewed. Whether the particular theater used had any affect on this, I am unsure, but I do know that overall I would not change a thing about this production.

The Story of Andrea Fields

...the song Girl At Home by Taylor Swift. This song is one of my favorites. Its bridge struck me most. Because of this song I remember a story of a beautiful, young, and respected woman doctor who’s in love. It is entitled The Story of Andrea Fields written by Elizabeth Seifert, who wrote more than 80 novels about doctors after quitting medical school and died at the age of eighty-four years old. The book was published by The New American Library, Inc. in 1950. It is a book of fiction that has 272 pages and divided into 13 chapters. It has no ISBN. It was purchased in the Books & Mags Bookstore for fifteen pesos in the year 2001. Someone once told Elizabeth Seifert that women did not belong to medicine and that was the reason why she quitted medical school after a year and a half. In this story, she will let us – the readers – realize that no matter what gender we have, if we really love that work even though it is not suitable for our gender, if it is all we wanted to do, if it is what we had dreamed of doing, we can fulfill that by giving our best in succeeding that dream for us to be able to work with those people without hesitations. We must face all the circumstances behind that path. We must show them that we belong. When it comes about love, she also showed that we must marry the one we love for us not to regret something in the end. The author wrote this book in a formal style and that’s good for the readers to read it clearly but because of...

Also, I have to study English very hard because most of the medical terms are in English. In order to become a doctor, I have to make a constant effort. There are few things for me to work on. First, I have to love and serve for those who are sick. Doctors need to give extra care for their patients because they need to know well about each patient. Second, all doctors have to be diligent. If the doctors are lazy, and do not care to know about the patients, they cannot help them to become healthier. There are many other things for me to work on, but I think these two are the most important things for me to become a good doctor. Healing Hospital

...Healing Hospital is a concept where a continuous chain of loving care is carried throughout the organization with kindness and skill from every caregiver (including leaders) to every patient and to one another” (Chapman, 2003, p. 10). The workers need to envelope the spirit and integrate compassion, real love, and selflessness when they are with each individual patient as well as with their co-workers. Caring needs not only be from staff to patients, but also between staff members themselves and so forth. As far as spirituality goes in a healing hospital it begins with the top dog and continues down to upper management, then middle management, then lower management, and down to employees. To give patient care you must possess passion for each patient and their care. To me passion for patient care is having passion for that person fully from their mind, body, and spirit. To also help provide any patient needs whether it be spiritual, physical, or emotional. It is always important to provide the best care as possible for all individual patients. Chapman (2007), states that the Healing Hospital is a concept that more than anything else, supports culture of caring. Therefore, love is the center of healing. “Hospitals need to be more than just a place of physical care of robotic repair” (Chapman, 2010). I also believe that spirituality influences patient’s health in a positive manner,...

Euthanasia

...euthanasia, such as active and passive. The passive euthanasia is the act of letting a terminal patient die in a natural way. It means that the doctor will not interfere by giving the patient any kind drug. The patients request the doctor to stop the treatment that is keeping them alive. The author of our text book gives us a few arguments in pro to passive euthanasia. First, the individual rights over bodies and lives, it means that all human being have the freedom to do whatever they want with their lives. Individuals have the right to do whatever they think if better for them. They can get tattoos; they can pierce parts of their body that even God would not believe; they can jump out of a roof when they are depressed, so why not ask for a doctor pull the cord? The second argument is shortening the period of suffering, is this case a terminal patient with no quality of life should not suffer any longer. The doctors and the family should let the patient go if they know that is no chance of recovery. They have to understand that prolonging this patient’s life will just bring them more pain and suffer. The health care professionals and the families should make decisions based on the patient’s best interest. Last but not least the patients’ right to die with dignity, it means that human being have the right of dying distinction. The doctors have to respect the patient’s decision of not to deteriorate on a bed waiting for death to take his life away. A terminal patient wishes not...

Magic Realist Elements in ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ by G.G. Marquez

...Magic realist elements in ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ by G.G. Marquez. Paradoxically enough, a reception of a book starts even before it is taken to reader’s hands and opened. When one only hears the name of the author or the title of the novel, some associations appear almost automatically. These associations can later on influence the reader’s impressions or even – to some degree – the analysis of a chosen literary work. Thus, when the name of Marquez is evoked, the very first thing to come to one’s mind is probably ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ and – for some readers – the term of ‘magic realism’. Every other Marquez’s work must ‘take into an account’ such inevitable context. Then, the title also determines reader’s expectations. In the case of ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ – the subject of this essay – all enormous tradition of love literature passes in the background, due to the novel’s title. To what degree these associations help in the understanding of Marquez’s famous book it is to be discovered. To begin with, obviously not all of the Colombian writer’s works have been created in the magic realist mode. In ‘In Evil Hour’ (1961) or ‘The General in His Labyrinth” (1989) there are hardly any magic realist elements. On the other hand, ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ still functions as the main and most eminent example of magic realism in the world literature, and the one best recognised by an average reader, too. As to ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’, it seems...

Living with Cancer

...call to say hi. Don’t feel sorry or pity the person. Instead do things that can cheer them up asking how they’re doing and ask if you can do anything for them. Many find going to support groups helpful to accept the fact they have or lost someone to cancer. The awareness does show favoritism toward to certain cancers rather than all. It covers the ones with higher rates and more known killers. Doing your own research helps in many ways; if there are areas you don’t understand you can look to see if you can understand better before you ask your doctor questions. Doing research on different stages and about the cancer itself makes it easier to understand what you’re going or will be going through. Whenever you get a chance always ask your doctor questions. If you are the family, you also may find the need to ask the doctor question to put your own mind at ease. Become aware of all of treatments that may interest you than ask your doctor if that treatment could be better. Just because you went through something like a loved one or friend does not mean you know what it’s like. Every person is different and so is their body.
