Since the circumstances and setting in this book are unconventional, the things that occur are even more strange. The characters- Ma and Jack- have specific routines they do everyday, and because they are stuck in a room and have nothing else to do. This is from when Jack is describing how they do their laundry.
Monday is a laundry day, we get into Bath with socks, underwears, my gray pants that ketchup squirted on, the sheets and dish towels, and we squish all the dirt out. Ma hots Thermostat way up for the drying, she pulls Clothes Horse out from beside Door and stands him open and I tell him to be strong… When we’ve twisted the water out of everything and hanged them up, Ma and me have to rip off out T-shirts and take turns pushing ourselves into Refrigerator to cool down. …show more content…
Very often, Jack describes what they are doing throughout the book in great detail, but not the spaces around him, which, at times, leaves holes in the setting.
There isn’t really much detailed imagery because the story is told from the point of view of a five-year-old. Most of the imagery present in the book is Jack explaining his actions, and not describing the world around him. This stems from the fact that he’s been in the same place for his whole life and doesn't need to acknowledge the room. If the author would’ve out in more detailed descriptions of the room, it would’ve added to the story and made it easier to visualize.
When Jack becomes more curious and aware that they are stuck in a room, Ma has no choice but to tell him everything about how she ended up in the room and what the room actually is. When she starts telling Jack about how she ended up in the room, she finally gives a better description than Jack
