Huselid Rutgers University Brian E. Becker State University of New York at Buffalo In this article, the authors focus on the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating the macro and macro domains of the strategic human resource (HR) management literature. Their specific focus is on the development of a differentiated HR architecture in support of strategy execution as a key organizing theme. A focus on strategic capabilities and strategic jobs as the focal point of workforce management system design represents a significant potential source of value creation for most firms. But, also, differentiation by strategic capability instead of hierarchical organizational level represents potential implementation challenges for managers, and theoretical and empirical challenges for academics. Keywords: high-performance work systems; workforce differentiation; strategic human resource management; strategic capabilities A significant divide between the micro and macro levels of theory and analysis is evident in many areas of the organizational sciences. While increasing levels of specialization are often associated...

...Written Report MACRO COMPUTER SCIENCE What is a Macro Computer? A macro (short for "macroinstruction", from Greek μακρο- 'long') in computer science is a rule or pattern that specifies how a certain input sequence (often a sequence of characters) should be mapped to a replacement output sequence (also often a sequence of characters) according to a defined procedure. The mappings process that instantiates (transforms) a macro use into a specific sequence is known as macro expansion. A facility for writing macros may be provided as part of a software application or as a part of a programming language. In the former case, macros are used to make tasks using the application less repetitive. In the latter case, they are a tool that allows a programmer to enable code reuse or even to design domain-specific languages. Macros are used to make a sequence of computing instructions available to the programmer as a single program statement, making the programming task less tedious and less error-prone. (Thus, they are called "macros" because a big block of code can be expanded from a small sequence of characters). Macros often allow positional or keyword parameters that dictate what the conditional assembler program generates and have been used to create entire programs or program suites according to such variables as operating system, platform or other factors. The term derives from "macro instruction", and such expansions were originally used in generating assembly language code...

NGUYEN SUMMARY Macro-Leadership: Vision Macro-Leadership: Vision • Focuses on vision, long-term strategy and future planning. • Enables and encourages transformational change. • Is ready to take big risk in favor of the strategy & vision. • Innovative approach & willingness for disruptive change • Extrovert generalist favoring a broad-based leadership Micro-Leadership: Control Micro-Leadership: Control • Willing to take actions with respect to current reality. • Control & keep things in balance. • Adheres to mission & incremental changes. • Expert attitude with tendency to be extremely critical to deviation / divergence. • Manages & mitigates risk. • Continuity-based and transactional management approach. Vision versus Control Vision-Control-Matrix (Vander Ark, 2015) Vision versus Control • Vision alone does not enable change. • Vision neglecting the micro-focus on realities in business management leads to failure. • Vision without practical leadership results in empty dreams. • Control alone demotivates, does not benefit from diversity & prevents individual growth. • Control without keeping the “big picture” in mind leads to control obsession. • Control obsession is toxic for any organization. ...The four contemporary approaches to management are: systems theory, organizational behavior, quantitative management and sociotechnical systems. Each contemporary approach is influenced by an environment factor. These impacts are macro-environment, competitive environment and internal environment. The macro-environment of an organization involves variables such as political, social, legal and technological. Competitive environment of an organization involves the organization and professional players whom compete in the market place. Internal environment of an organization are components and processes within, such as employees, managers and resources. Each environment is relevant to the contemporary approaches however the approaches are unique in their own way. To elaborate more, the systems theory demonstrates that the organization’s execution relies on how efficient it is administering goods and services utilizing inputs from the external environment, in a matter that changes inputs to outputs. An open system is associations that would influenced by, and that affect, their surroundings, continually interacting with its environment (Bateman & Snell, 2012, p. 42). Internal, competitive and macro-environment are relevant to the systems theory because this approach to management deals with circumstances inside and outside of the organization. Quantitative management organizes scientific or measurable data as premise for choices...

...Zoom In Zoom Out Page 1 of 2 Business Management Essay COMPANY: Starbucks Subject; “Discuss the impact macro factors may place upon your chosen organisation in the future (1-5 years) and how the organisation may positively manage this”. When speak from macro and micro perspective we must bear in mind that these are two different phenomenon’s. Micro factors can be described as factors that people and businesses keep in mind when making decisions concerning the allocation of resources, whereas macro factors can be described as the factors that are kept in mind when making decisions regarding not only specific companies but industries as a whole and economies, more over micro environmental factors are the one’s over which the business has control for example price, product and promotion whereas macro environmental factors are the one’s over which the business has no control as such as social, cultural, technological and political factors. Businesses operate in markets keeping in mind changing situations not only of their market conditions but also the trends of the economies that they operate in, so that they can adjust and survive in accordance with new situations because adaptation is a must for a business to survive and prosper otherwise a business might be forced to cease operations and shut down. Starbucks is one of top five(Caribou coffee, Tully’s ,Coffee bean and tea leaf, Peet’s Coffee) businesses in a $11 billion industry. The coffee house industry grew from merely...

...Explain how the four contemporary approaches to management are different from one another. • The contemporary approaches to management include: sociotechnical system theory, quantitative management, organizational behavior, and system theory. The sociotechnical system theory is an approach to understanding the relationship between technology, individuals, organizations and society in work place design. "The sociotechnical systems approach says that a change in one part means there will have to be corresponding changes in other parts. “The sociotechnical systems approach says that a change in one part, means there will have to be a corresponding change in other parts. “The quantitative management approach involves the use of mathematical modeling to find the best solutions to problems. One important component of the quantitative management approach is an ability to objectively collect information about a problem and possible solutions to develop appropriate, and useful, mathematical models. Organizational behavior theory usually represents concepts that help a company create better management practices. Concepts such as leadership, decision making, team building, motivation, and job satisfaction are all facets of organizational behavior and responsibilities of management. Systems theory is a broad perspective that allows managers to examine patterns and events in the workplace. This helps managers to coordinate programs to work as a collective whole for the overall goal or mission...

...Contemporary Approaches to Management and their Environments The different approaches to management have been changed, fine tuned and discarded over the years. In the coming paragraphs we will take a look at the contemporary approaches. We will examine how they compare to each other as well as if they can be utilized in the three types of environments; internal, competitive and macro environment. The first approach to management would be the sociotechnical systems theory. Researchers believed that for an organization to be successful it would need the social system and the technical system to work together in harmony. The social system consists of the employees, their knowledge, skills, attitude and their understanding of their job. Whereas the technical system consists of the items the employee need to complete the job like tools, devices or even techniques. Both systems would work together to create an outcome that would be beneficial to the organization. The second approach is the quantitative management approach. This approach uses mathematical or numeric techniques to calculate an organization’s issues so the manager can make an informed decision. Some techniques used are the linear equations, forecasting, simulation and breakeven analysis. This method is not used as much due to the fact an organization would need to find people that are very knowledgeable about quantitative mathematics. The third approach is the organizational behavior approach in which...

...This week’s reading discusses four contemporary management approaches. One of those approaches is the Sociotechnical System. This system approach revolves around the social aspects of people. Quantitative management is a system in which the primary focus is to have specific formulas where the best answers to common management questions can be answered by plugging in information. Organization behavior, which is very common in my workplace, focuses on bettering specific work group safety and performance. Lastly, the System’s Theory is the interdisciplinary study of systems in general with the goal of elucidating principals that can be applied to all types of systems (Bateman, 2013). Sociotechnical, also known as STS, is defined as the social aspects of people and society. This sociotechnical approach is commonly used when managing complex projects. While dealing with complex projects, people tend to let their difference in opinion get in the way and they begin to lose sight of the situation at hand. To successfully use the sociotechnical approach, one must be able to keep a those being manage focused and on track to accomplish the task at hand without downplaying the ideas and suggestions of others. When I think of the Quantitative Management, the first thing that comes to mind is quantity and numbers. As I mentioned earlier, the Quantitative approach is to formulate an answer to managerial questions by plugging in information. Organizational behavior surrounds one’s ability...

...Learning Activities from Chapter 1 Master in health information management Healthcare information leadership Millennia Atlantic University Mariana Viloria 1. Differences between micro and macro perspective of healthcare. MACRO-PERSPECTIVE: Macro perspective is a form of analysis which focuses on the structure of society and provides a way of seeing society as a unified whole. In this macro perspective minimal attention is given to the individual or the subjectivity of actors - the structures of society are thought to be primary and responsible for shaping the individual. MICRO- PERSPECTIVE: A micro perspective focuses on the individual level, while a macro perspective focuses more broadly on society. Ethics is a major concern in the health care field. Health care professionals must ensure that they are benefitting patients and meeting ethical and moral guidelines in the provision of care. There are two types of ethical issues facing the health care community: micro issues and macro issues. Micro issues cover issues that arise on a daily basis, and they involve such factors as technological change and dealing with a diverse population. Macro issues concern the allocation, use, and management of health care resources. Macro issues are of major importance as the amount of resources being consumed by health care continues to rise. At the macro level there is a political issue, allegedly somewhere between 25 and 50 million persons who are "uninsured," by which the...

...Antonio Wilson Unit 2 Assignment MT140: Introduction to Management Kaplan University In this paper and assignment the four contemporary approaches to management will be explained. And the definition of open systems and the outline of internal, competitive, and macro environments of an organization. The contemporary approaches to management are sociotechnical system theory, quantitative management, organizational behavior, and systems theory. Sociotechnical system theory is a theory of management that believes technology merely constrains human action instead of rigidly determining behavioral outcomes. This can build good human relations into the technology workflow. Quantitative management relies on solely technology. The quantitative management approach involves the use of math modeling to find the right solutions to problems. Applied to workplace challenges, going from making decisions during product development to fix employee conflicts. Organizational behavior is like sociotechnical system theory when the focus is on people rather than technology. Organizational behavior is the study and knowledge of how people act in organizations. The goal is to build better relationships by achieving human objectives, organizational objectives, and social objectives. Similar the system theory does not look at individuals but the flow of business as a whole. It focuses on subdivisions within the organization and how it ties in with the big picture, the business. An open...
