...Analysis 3.1 Dan Brown ITT-Technical Institute Problem Solving Theory-GS1140 Mr. Wood April 23rd, 2015 i. Making a telephone call in the year 2020. In the year 2020 making a telephone call will be very similar as it is today. But I believe that there will be some major advancements in the technology involved with phone calls. Some of those advancements I can foresee is totally hands-free calling by using the dwellings Wi-Fi and entertainment devices to accept the incoming call and be able to broadcast it over speakers in the entertainment systems of the home. There would be small microphones located in each room so that no headset would need to be worn to take the call. Also there would have to be a way to screen the calls and the phone system would actually vocalize who is calling. Kind of like caller id but a lot better in the fact that there would be no looking at a small screen telling you who called. Also making a call will be simpler as well since the microphones would let you dial via voice command. And with the phone system interlinked with the home entertainment system and computer systems it would have the customers contact list available at just the command of the user’s voice. ii. Eating a meal with your family in the year 2050. Eating a family meal in the year 2050 will be very different than it is 2015. I truly believe that there will be advancements in the technology around how we eat and how the food is prepared. Eating the meal will...

...can not merely be measured by how much homework a student does. I believe that most high schools assign an excessive amount of homework and that limiting the amount of independent work assigned to be completed out of school would vastly improve the quality of high schoolers and their education. The abundance of work required to be done outside of the classroom often hurts students more than it helps. Most high school students juggle school, extracurricular activities, and a job, making it difficult to have time for homework and an adequate amount of sleep. Homework would be more effective if there was time allotted in the school day to work on it. Students often come across almost all of their problems with homework when they...

...In middle school a lot of students, mostly my “friends”, didn’t care about their grades. This being said I didn’t try hard academically because I wanted to fit in with the crowd. It was already hard enough to fit in at school and making myself even more different wouldn't have helped. It was also very hard to keep up with all the homework my teachers were giving me. My previous middle school was very laid back about homework. When I transferred it was like a huge surprise with the amount of homework they were giving out. I had so much homework every night that I would have no time to do anything else after school. I was so stressed out that on most nights I decided to not do most of my homework so I could do other enjoyable activities. Once I graduated 8th grade I felt a sense of relief because I knew that I would finally have a clean slate starting high school. In general more students care about their grades in high school than in middle school. This has to do with the fact that colleges only look at your high school grades, not your middle school grades. So when I entered high school it was like my whole attitude towards grades changed. I realized that having good grades in high school is very important...

...Homework #2 – Excel Charts and Pivot Tables Overview and Learning Objectives This homework assignment asks you to use Microsoft Excel to use the VLookup function in a report, and also to generate charts and pivot tables. These are all useful skills. VLookup simplifies spreadsheet logic in many situations, and charts offer a visual perspective that can help people to see trends and data relationships. And once you get the idea of pivot tables, they are extremely useful in summarizing data “on the fly” in a variety of formats. This assignment is related to course objective #4 (“Design and implement Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Access databases to support business decision making”). Quality Furniture Enterprises, Continued This homework assignment continues the scenario from Homework #1, about Quality Furniture Enterprises. Caitlin’s uncle (and boss) was pleased with the sales forecast report she created. “I guess I should learn Excel,” he says. “I’ve been using the calculator on my laptop to compute the totals, and then copying and pasting things into a Word document.” Caitlin did her best not to appear smug, but it was nice to be appreciated, especially since this was still her first month on the job. But before she had any time to bask in her success, her uncle said, “And since you did so well on that report, I have another project for you.” So much for taking an early lunch break today. “Sure,” she said. “What do you need?” “First off, remember how I told...

...Steven Pinker in “Mind Over Mass Media” writes, “Technologies are the only thing that will keep us smart.” Moreover, Steven Pinker states his claim that electronic media is making us smarter rather than impacting our intelligence in a negative way. I think I would have to agree with him as I rely on electronic media while getting an education. Higher Education depends on electronic media allowing us to be able to gain knowledge easier inside and outside of the classroom. The internet provides search browsers as a helpful resource for when the material that was given is not being understood. Most times I am given certain pages to read for a class and I get overwhelmed when I open the textbook to read the many words, paragraphs, and pages. It...

...also, reward students for better grades. However, never forget that making learning fun so children discover learning is fun will create the most return over the long term, as far as learning and better grades are concerned. For more information pertaining to good grades, click here. Although effective study skills and study habits result in better grades, do you know what effective study habits and study skills are? They are regular, consistent study habits that good students use every time they prepare for a test or do homework. In this section, effective study habits and study skills that help primary school students get good grades will be emphasized. Effective study habits are learned at home. Parenting means teaching our children these skills and making them habits. Study skills are so important to improving grades that some think grades really measure how well parents teach their children to study, particularly in the primary grades. The purpose of this section is to help parents teach their children effective study habits, not only to improve good grades, but to make education easier and, even, enjoyable. Despite the fact effective study habits are, largely, a discipline we instill in our children, we must always bear in mind that learning through play inspires children to learn more. So, any opportunity to mix play and learning together should be taken. Hence, making learning play is a study skill for getting good grades. Note TV...

...Jacob Binkley Problem Solving Module 3 Analysis Futuring Exercises Making a telephone call in the year 2020 I see people in the year 2020 using telephone to make calls in new ways. By that year, I expect people to completely redesign the hardware and interface of cellphones. I see the physical devices being reduced to projection instruments placed in certain devices, like a wristband, that projects the user interface onto the subjects arm. The user could the control the device with voice commands or physically touching the area the image is displayed. This would allow devices to be used while swimming or any situation that involves water. I also see them beginning to tweak the software that Stephen Hawking uses to control his computer, and implementing it into cellular devices. This would allow people with physical disabilities to use and operate a cell phone by subtle gestures of the face, eyes, and neck. This would give them the ability to communicate with words if they cannot already. Eating a family meal in 2050 I see families in 2050 eating and enjoying healthy, natural, and organic foods. I see todays American youth realizing how unhealthy we are as a society, and how malnourished our foods actually are. They will realize the things we can do to take care of our bodies, and the benefits of healthy eating. Todays youth is tomorrows parents and leaders, and they will change the ways of American society very drastically as soon as they take power. I see them starting...

...I think high schools should start later in the day and end later in the day, to improve high school students lives. Now that research proves this idea. Many students have a hard time waking up on time and tend to perform poorly in class without the correct amount of sleep. So lets talk about some of the benefits of starting school later on in the day. Firstly and most importantly students will come to class alert and ready to learn. Many teachers struggle with getting students to be active in class and it is not their fault but the school's fault. The reason why students are not being active in class is because school starts too early and causing students to get a lack of sleep making them sleep deprived. If students got a good night...

...Homework brings feelings of dread, anxiety, and stress to many students. Successful students often sacrifice their health and well-being for the sake of their academic future. Students can end up sleep deprived if overloaded with homework and can even resort to self-harm and illegal activities to cope with the stress. To avoid having students burn themselves out, teachers should assign no more than fifteen minutes of homework to high school students a day and only assign homework with obvious value. Parents often hear the begrudging complaints from their children about having to sit down for hours of homework after school. These students aren’t focused and engaged in learning; they’re mindlessly completing a given task. In reality, this is not helping the student at all, and only creating an unhealthy attitude toward school. The article “Success with Less Stress” discusses a study...

...the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one to come to terms with what the youth have thrown at them on the daily. It seems to be that teachers do not realize the amount of workload students have on a daily basis. The typical day of a student is as follows: wake up, go to school for seven hours, (usually) go to practice for two hours, go home, and then do homework until they can no longer keep their eyes open. When walking through the halls, many fatigued students can be seen. Recently, students have been putting homework over their own health, which is utterly astonishing. Teachers expect their homework to be done for the next day the night that it is assigned. Yet, teachers fail to realize that students are not robots; students have practices to go to, games to play, and family to visit....

...At the after school program Angelyn and I would review what classes I needed the most improvement in, and we would talk about the things I could do to improve. I began to prepare myself for school exams and things seemed to become easier. I hadn’t begun to think about college, careers, but I had made up my mind that I was actually going to try in school and that I was going to at least graduate from high school and not drop out like I had planned. As a result of me doing the best I could in school I started making the grades I wanted and I wasn’t struggling as much. Before I met Angelyn I was such a pessimistic person, I always looked at things as complicated, and as if I was just not good at doing anything. I saw myself as pretty much a failure and even thought my parents moved to a different country so that I could have a much better education I hated going to school and I didn’t care about it at all. I was very unappreciative. After I met Angelyn I became more of an optimistic person who likes to try new things and likes to see herself succeed. I graduated from high school with honors and I’m now in college...

...stuck or as soon afterwards as possible. * Make your questions as specific as possible. It is easier for your instructor to answer a question such as, “I don’t understand how to solve for x when the equation begins with a fraction” than “I just don’t understand this section. Can you help me?” In addition, by making your questions as specific as possible, you can sometimes find the answer on your own. * Even if you do not understand what the textbook explains yet, read it over before class. When you have some knowledge about the concepts before they are presented, you will find them easier to understand. * Embrace word problems. Although they are sometimes corny, word problems are the gateway to using your math in real life. * If you are taking a math class at your local campus, sit near the front of the class. * Take advantage of your campus’s help sessions and the CME online coaching. Studying for Exams * Study everyday instead of cramming for exams. Review previous materials everyday for about a half hour to help you retain skills. * Do not multitask when you are studying. Cognitive psychologists find that multitasking makes you less efficient at everything you are working on. For some people, even playing music in the background can hurt their ability to focus. Find a place to work that is free of distractions while you study your math homework. * Get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods, and exercise prior to taking your exams. * Take...
