The whole paranoia style that surrounds Cold War films stems from the idea that the Russians had the ultimate doomsday device that would destroy the world in the press of a button. No film depicts this idea better than Dr. Strangelove. We only watched the clips from the film, but you could tell the idea that the Russians had such a device was a real fear. The film Manchurian Candidate is interesting to say the least it does a great job of depicting the paranoid style. A few particular scenes that could be used are the dream sequences that the men who were captured experienced. At the time of Green Berets the Vietnam War was still ongoing so anything to zany or controversial as shown in Tropic Thunder might have drawn the ire of critics and audiences alike. The Vietnam War films would depict certain theories that were drawn up as to why we were involved or how much we were involved in the Vietnam war. For example, Green Berets (1968) focused on the use of the containment theory where the premise of this theory was to stop the spread of communism into other countries. The film Apocalypse Now (1979) focused on the Economic Imperialism Theory and the premise of this theory was that we had so much interest in Southeast Asia for possible economic endeavors they we possibly could not lose this area to communism. Specifically, that the war was a result of American greed and destroyed lives of soldiers involved. Rambo First Blood (1982) focused on the Revisionist theory, this theory entailed that we did not focus on the Vietnam War to our capabilities and if we had devoted our attention to the war efforts we would have come out victorious. One of the characteristics it displays throughout the film is the irony, playfulness or black humor nature of the film. There are some serious moments of the film such as trying to free the citizens and allowing them to cross the border again rather than letting them continue to be prisoners. The film for the most part is a screw ball comedy that features Historiographic metafiction. While there was a war to try and over throw Saddam Hussein, I am almost certain it would be heavily frowned upon if three soldiers took it upon themselves to seek out gold on their own for their own benefit. The emotion of the film is very playful in nature and little to no seriousness besides the combat scenes. The amount of gore such as the cow exploding due to a land mine or when Wahlberg’s character is shot and seeing the inside of his body cavity. I do not think you would see this in movies before the postmodern era due to the fact some might view it as disrespectful or may a little traumatizing. The paranoia style also comes into play when the soldiers are trying to flee with the gold and prisoners and Iraqi soldiers begin shooting off gas in an attempt to stop them.
