...Maxine Kumin’s “Woodchucks” is a genuinely shocking poem about a farmer or gardener who is rightfully irritated at these woodchucks, also known as groundhogs, that have invaded their garden. In the beginning of the poem, the speaker is trying to get rid of them in the most peaceful manner, while later on they become increasingly frustrated towards them and eventually plan to do anything in their power to get rid of these wild creatures. Throughout the poem, clues are given little by little about this speakers true identity. I have come to the conclusion that the speaker is a middle aged woman who may or may not be poor, but certainly views her garden as a necessity. As I did some research on this poem, I quickly found that Maxine Kumin, the...

...Running head: Golden Mean Golden Mean: Mathematical and Real-World Analysis Abstract The following document studies the importance of the mathematical Golden Mean and how it relates to real-world applications, and its importance in mathematics for solving problems. Team C first puts the Golden Mean to use in real-world application solving a problem, and follows up with a brief history of the Golden Mean, what it does, where it applies, and how it works. Researched findings on the Golden Mean have been collaborated and discussed in an attempt to fully understand its importance and function. The Golden Mean a=1 b=? Length =1 1b=1+ 61 Multiply by LCD (b) to remove fractions, and you get 1=b2+b b2+b-1=0 (Isolate zero by moving one to the other side of the equation) b=-b±b2-4ac2a Where ab2+bb+c=0 b=-1±(1)2-41(-1)2(10 b=-1+52 b=.618034 1+.6180341= 1.618034 a=1.618034. The Golden Ratio has been used throughout history. Discovered in 1200 AD, this equation can be found in art, architecture, nature, geometry, and the human body. “The Golden Ratio, also known as the divine proportion, Golden Mean, or golden section, is a number produced when taking the ratios of distances in simple geometric figures such as the pentagon, pentagram, decagon, and dodecahedron. The Golden Ratio also happens to be denoted using the symbol, or sometimes using the symbol ” (Golden Mean/Ratio, 2013, p. 1). “Leonardo Fibonacci discovered a simple mathematical sequence that...

...Pepper Seed DNA Extraction Biochem lab: CHE 452L marisol gomez Pepper Seed DNA Extraction Biochem lab: CHE 452L marisol gomez 2015 2015 INTRODUCTION The jalapeno is a member of the capsicum family, along with many other peppers. The usual methods for characterization of different pepper species are based on their morphological and physiological traits, however this many not always be enough. For peppers, their traits are influenced by things like their genotype or their specific environment. Genomic markers can allow for a more direct comparison of closely related individuals (Ansari and Khan, 2012). In our case we focus on DNA extraction. The two basic parts of a DNA extraction procedure include the breaking of the cell walls to expose the DNA and the use of enzymes to remove contaminants. The DNA is analyzed for purity by taking the absorbance. The pure DNA is then visualized by gel electrophoresis. The DNA extraction of plant seeds is difficult because of their cell wall. The method used to break the cell wall includes grinding the seeds with liquid nitrogen. The addition of DNAzol is used to isolate genomic DNA (Chomczynski et al. 1997). Restriction enzymes are necessary to fragment patterns of the DNA and in turn making it easier to analyze the DNA through gel electrophoresis. BACKGROUND The purpose of our experiment is to extract the DNA from pepper seeds to be able to compare and contrast the similarities in their DNA. The extraction of DNA from a plant...

...FIBONACCI SEQUENCE Shafira Chairunnisa | 11 Blue INTRODUCTION Before we get into the details of Fibonacci sequence, let us go back to the basic definition of a sequence in Mathematics. According to The Free Dictionary by Farlex, a sequence is an ordered set of mathematical quantities called terms. There are two types of sequence: arithmetic and geometric sequence. An arithmetic sequence is a sequence of numbers that has a constant difference between every two consecutive terms. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9,…. The numbers in the sequence are called terms. Thus, 1 is the first term, 3 is the second term, 5 is the third term, and so forth. The symbol Un denotes the first term of a sequence. Since the first term is 1, we can express it as Un= 1. Each consecutive terms has a difference (denoted as d). Meanwhile, a geometric sequence is a sequence in which the same number is multiplied or divided by each term to get the next term in the sequence. 3, 9, 27, 81, 243,…. This is an example of geometric sequence. The quotient of a term with its previous term is called ratio. In geometric sequence, the ratio between each successive terms is constant. What is a Fibonacci sequence? Fibonacci sequence is a special sequence. It is founded by an Italian mathematician named Leonardo Pisano Bigollo, known commonly as Fibonacci. According to WhatIs.com, it is a set of numbers that starts with a one or a zero, followed by a one, and proceeds based on the rule that each number (called...

...‘At the Bay’ largely utilizes natural images as a means of expression, focusing heavily on landscape and setting in order to create the foundation for the establishment of themes integral to the characterization and plot development. The story instantly commences with the light shed on scenery and environment, “The sun had not yet risen and the whole of crescent bay was hidden under a white sea-mist” followed closely by ,”Drenched were the cold fuchsias, round pearls of dew lay on the flat nasturtium leaves”. References to ‘paddocks’, ‘bungalows’ and ‘a flock of sheep came pattering’ provide evidence of a rural, New Zealand setting and the usage of seasonal images of “the marigolds and the pink” indicate a Spring backdrop. Phrases such as ,” It looked as though the sea had beaten up softly in the darkness, as though one immense wave had come rippling” foreshadow the darker aspect this story is to follow as it progresses. The rural setting is further reinforced by the personification of the ‘gum-tree’, “An enormous shock haired giant with his arms stretched out” Mansfield’s composition follows an abundance of paragraphs, each of a constant length allowing for the build-up of a slow paced, tranquil atmosphere to grow at the base of the narrative, in line with the expanse of description. The first hint of one of the recurring motifs comes with the encounter with the Cat and the Sheep-Dog. Mansfield gives the Cat a metaphorical voice, “Ugh! What a course, revolting, creature...

...busiTAFE NSW Higher Education A student’s basic guide to bibliographies and referencing: Harvard Style Version: February 2012 www.highered.tafensw.edu.au TAFE NSW - Technical and Further Education Commission CRICOS Provider Code 00591E Last revised: February 2012 Page 1 of 10 Why reference Most of the work you produce requires referencing to demonstrate that you have researched and considered the ideas of others in researching your topic or presenting your argument. Referencing is also necessary because it prevents you from ‘plagiarising’ which can lead to an automatic fail result. Plagiarism is using someone else’s thoughts, words or ideas and writing them as if they were your own. It is technically stealing and is a breach of ethics. Referencing tells the reader where the original idea can be found. What should be referenced? Anything that you have read or heard that has influenced your writing: • A concept or idea • A paraphrased quote • A direct quote • Personal communication • Class notes • Script or screenplay • A contestable argument General knowledge does not need to be referenced, for example: Canberra is the capital of Australia. But if you read that ‘The Yass – Canberra plains were chosen because of the snow in Dalgety …’ this would have to be referenced. A contestable argument that would need to be referenced may be: It is a fact that Lady Denman, rather than the Surveyor Scrivener actually proclaimed the name Canberra. In-text...

...according to Elon Musk (2016), the cost per person could be “close to $200,000” (pg.1). In order to save money, a plan needs to be made and used. Such as the Obama plan. “ What’s really missing from the Obama plan is any sense of urgency or vision about where the whole human spaceflight enterprise is headed” (Thompson, 2012, p.2). Aside from planning, humans need to come together in order to achieve the mission to Mars. The U.S. had to rely on Russia after the impending retirement of the Space Shuttle but even with relying on the Russians didn’t get popular support from the U.S. citizens (Thompson, 2012). Although the US and Russia have tried to retire the Space Shuttle, which limits space control, there is only one problem. The only real problem about starting the mission to get people to Mars is that the U.S. relies on them (Russia) for too -much for pricy space exploration vehicles (Thompson, 2012). Mars may be tricky to get to but in fall of 2015, NASA stated that they had taken pictures that prove that flowing water once existed on Mars (Ross, 2016), so it might be easier to colonize. But first we must come up with a plan to colonize Mars. How to Colonize Mars Humans will only be able to colonize another planet once they get there, and that will take time. According to NASA (2016), the mission to Mars for a crew of four would take a two to three year round-trip (p.2). The crew will have to do many things, such as “recycle their water because they’ll need more than 25...

...AND then, after six years, she saw him again. He was seated at one of those little bamboo tables decorated with a Japanese vase of paper daffodils. There was a tall plate of fruit in front of him, and very carefully, in a way she recog way, he was peeling an orange. He must have felt that shock of recognition in her for he looked up and met her eyes. Incredible! He didn't know her! She smiled; he frowned. She came towards him. He closed his eyes an instant, but opening them his face lit up as though he had struck a match in a dark room. He laid down the orange and pushed back his chair, and she took her little warm hand out of her muff and gave it to him. "Vera!" he exclaimed. "How strange. Really, for sit down? You've had lunch? Won't you have some coffee?" She hesitated, but of course she meant to. "Yes, I'd like some coffee." And she sat down opposite him. "You've changed. You've changed very much," he said, s lighted look. "You look so well. I've never seen you look so well before." "Really?" She raised her veil and unbuttoned her high fur collar. "I don't feel very well. I can't bear this weather, you know." "Ah, no. You hate the cold. . . . " "Loathe it." She shuddered. "And the worst of it is that the older one grows . . . " He interrupted her. "Excuse me," and tapped on the table for the waitress. "Please bring some coffee and cream." To her: "You are sure you won't eat any perhaps. The fruit here is very good." ...“It's delightful when your imaginations come true, isn't it?”(M. Montgomery, 15). Anne of Green Gables written by Lucy Maud Montgomery is a novel which focuses on the theme of conflict between imagination and social expectations. Montgomery represents her passionate sense of creativity and imagination through the unique yet queer character of Anne Shirley whom is present in a series of her novels. Montgomery develops this character in her written work by making many connections and similarities relative to significant memories of her own childhood. As a Canadian author, Montgomery uses a variety of Canadian landmarks in her writing which contributed greatly to Canadian literature. It has also been recognized that a wide collection of writing devices are used within the author’s work to enhance the development of the novel. The theme of this novel presents significance to the character of Anne whom continuously struggles to subside her unique imagination and submit to social expectations. There are endless examples within Anne of Green Gables that demonstrate the similarities between herself and the beloved character of Anne. To conclude, the character of Anne Shirley is merely a reflection of Montgomery herself. A Canadian with roots in Scotland, Lucy M. Montgomery was a regional romantic novelist best known for Anne of Green Gables (1908)( Castriota, Lucy). Montgomery was born in 1874 in PEI where she was raised by her maternal grandparents after her mother passed away due...
