“A tree is known for its fruit; alcoholism by its problems”.(Goodwin 1981 p.31).According to Goodwin alcohol dependency is when a person has problems with drink but regardless of this will not quit.As stated by Cooney he the definition by Mary Mann in her book Primer on alcoholism(Henry Holt and Co.1950,New York).She defines an alcoholic as “anyone whose drinking caused a continuning problem in any department of his or her own life”.(Cooney 2002 p.3).The view of whether alcoholism is a disease is raised in Goodwins book.It originated in a written survey by Benjamin Rush and the British physician Thomas Trotter in the nineteenth century.(Goodwin 1981 p.32). n R 2003 P.13).It is important to view alcohol dependency as a disease so we can assess it properly and understand it better.Two features of this illness are loss of control and relapse.Loss of control is the when the person who is dependent on alcohol has an inability to stop drinking once they start.Relapse is the return to heavy drinking after being sober for a long period of time.Minor signs of alcohol dependency include blackouts,which are complete loss of memory,gulping drinks which may involve constant moving from group to group at a party so they can drink extra without drawing attention to themselves,impaired control which means the individual cannot be certain they can stop drinking after their first drink.Others include aggression which can be either verbal or physical,binge drinking which includes drinking hopelessly for a few days,excuses to try justify having a drinkand being generous with money by paying for more than they are able …show more content…
.Psychological problems include guilt,self-deception,Amnesia,and depression.Some medical problems include problems with the stomach,liver,heart,pancreas,nerves and possible brain damage.Social problems include family and relationship problems,problems with work and involvent in crime and anti-social behaviour.”Also alcoholism is clearly defined in four ways:cravings,no control,physical reliance and capacity”.(Lowe 2008 p.7).A sign of alcoholism according to Lowe is when you may rely on alcohol to deal with situations such as shyness or anxiety.(Lowe 2008 p.15).The question of whether younger people are aware of the signs and symptoms of alcohol dependency is accounted for by the press.But the problem is real and the media only cover part of this
