The twenty-first century has brought a whole new means to mass media and the way the audience receives news. Audiences want the latest news simultaneously on their smart devices and the massive array of media outlets want to be the audience’s main source. With the hearts, minds, and wallets of the audience up for grabs it, is no wonder why mass media news stories are manipulated to present biased impressions on events, positioning than in whatever way suits their interests.

Research has shown that 53% of people believe the news being presented to them is the truth. So why do we believe this? It all happens within our minds and emotions that make us receptive to lies, and resistant to information that exposes the truth........According to a …show more content…
It is evident in the Carfentanyl stories that sensationalism was used to alarm viewers. An example of this is an exaggeration on where the Carfentanyl could be found and the extraordinary link to ISIS that Nine News used.

After examining The Courier Mail and other sources, it is obvious that binary opposition was used in statements like “A small dose has the capacity to kill. This is not a drug anyone should be taking a risk with, Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker said.” Fact-checking statements like this present the audience news story that are believed to be factual, due to the statement backing up the media story.

Therefore, when the brain is presented with the option of fact-checking statements made by a politician or a professor, an impulsive decision is made because it’s easier. Basically, if the argument is convincing, the brain makes the conclusion that it's true and believes it. Correspondingly human bias and prejudice play a role in the way the audiences interpret the news. Mass media craves audiences and are willing to present biased impressions on events because it’s what the audience desires to hear confirming their existing beliefs, thus twisting the facts and is playing a misleading and manipulated story which deceives the …show more content…
The media manipulated the story to emphasize the risk of a member of the public coming into contact. It is evident in The Courier Mail the phase “Anyone who comes into contact with the drug on their skin or eyes are at great risk.” Positioning the read to fill in the gap, that it highly likely for them to come it to contact with Carfentanyl. Warning them to take further precaution when out and about in Brisbane.

In an age where we are continuously connected, communication and information travel is getting quicker and quicker, the world seems to get smaller and smaller. As a result, this changes how the world receives their news and communicates, especially with today’s attraction with social media. Social media has given people a constant connection to everything that’s happening around the world, putting pressure on mass media to produce information
