Telecommuting is defined as a typical work arrangement where the employee travels through telecommunication links; therefore, keeping in touch with their fellow coworkers and the employer, through email or telephone, but not physically in person (Rocco, 2014). The employee may sometime visit the office, in order to attend meetings, conferences, or to touch base with the clients. As well as, when working from home, the employees often use technology such as; laptops, tablet computers equipped with a Wi-Fi connection, smart phones, and video conferencing (Rocco, 2014). In this case scenario, Harry Davis, the Human Resource Manager (HRM), conducted a survey to identify the cause of the high turnover rate at MedEx, with the medical billing specialists (Martocchio, 2013). Research suggests that telecommuting reduces turnover and raise employee morale (Rocco, 2014). Therefore, higher employee retention lowers company recruitment, hiring, and training expenses. Hence, the organizations high turnover rate is the primary reason that Harry considered implementing a telecommuting structure. Just as telework can be a way of attracting top talent, it can also serve to keep top talent and institutional knowledge within an organization (Drew, 2013). Therefore, companies clearly recognize that turnover is very costly. Furthermore, another advantage of telecommuting is flexibility. However, telecommuting will largely mean that it is not entirely necessary for employees to maintain a standard 9 to 5 workdays, like many office-based roles. Meanwhile, the flexibility of telecommuting is a major added bonus to a role; for employees with life commitments, such as family or study, one that is likely to make them more loyal to a company or organization.
