... They were running away from the unusual goddess Medusa. She was an unusual goddess because of her family, her life before the curse, the curse, her life after the curse, and her death. Medusa’s family was quite interesting. Her parents were Keto and Phorkys. Keto was her mom and Phorkys was her dad. Her father gave her the power to make herself beautiful, and she used it. She had two sisters. One of them was Stheno, and the other one was Euryale (Regula). Medusa and both of her sisters were gorgons, which were monsters of the underworld. Medusa is and was the most famous gorgon out of her and her sisters. Both of her sisters were immortal, but Medusa was mortal. The differences between the two were mortals could die, and immortals could not die from old age. Medusa had her differences from her family. Medusa had a wonderful life before the curse. Her hair was a golden color and was as wavy as the waves of the sea. Creamy was the color of her skin. Her skin was also smoother than a baby’s bottom. She was also said to have beautiful eyes. Overall, Medusa was just a beautiful goddess. People, like Athena, were jealous of her beauty. Medusa was a beautiful before...

...I am Medusa. My name means queen or ruler. I was born mortal and my skill is turning people to stone when they look at me in the eyes. I am known for my hair full of snakes. My parents are Phorcys and Keto. I have two sister name Stheno and Euryale. My sisters became gorgons before I did. We were the most powerful winged daemons(a divinity or supernatural being of a nature between gods and humans.) I was raped by Poseidon and had two sons named Pegasus and Chrysaor. Chrysaor has one son named Geryon and one daughter named Oceanus. Two different myths reveal how I became immortal. The first myth is I failed to deliver my two sons. Since I failed to deliver my sons Athena the Goddess of Wisdom cursed me with snakes for hair and whoever looks...

...other supernatural elements of darkness were considered beautiful. Beauty could “express itself by making opposites converge”, therefore destroying the harsh distinction between ugliness and beauty (Eco 321). With this emergence, “Ugliness was no longer the negation of Beauty, but its other face,” thus allowing the possibility of the two contrasting ideas to exist in a single entity (Eco 321). The picture showed to the left is a piece called The Raft of Medusa, by Théodore Géricault. In fact, this was the same piece I had done my art research on. Interestingly, this was the art piece that had made me change my view on art as “boring” and made me appreciate art and its many different facets. The painting filled with distinctive brown, black and yellow strokes amongst the background of men portrayed as savages laying on top of each other fighting each other for survival, reveals the worst side of humanity. The painting is filled with gory and grotesque images. On the other hand, the reason I picked this painting for my research paper was because the dark side of the painting drew me into its bestial storyline, and the piece itself was quite appealing and beautiful in its own way with its various shading and symbolism. Umberto eco then concludes by claiming that ordinary people could create beautiful works of art on their own and that “the distinction between artists and ordinary people grew less marked” and “there was no longer room for criticism” (Eco 377). He goes on to talk...

...Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are worthwhile and that your reader genuinely...
