...Exercise 1) On-shore wind turbines are installed in land-based applications, while off-shore wind turbines are installed over water. The best thing about offshore windmills is the wind tends to be much more consistent and strong, which helps predict payback period and shorten it, for the cost of the turbine. The bad thing about offshore is aesthetics, some people don’t like the looks of the ocean shoreline being filled with turbines. It is also difficult to get the power from the turbines and back to the land where the electricity can be used. It can also be difficult to maintain the windmills out at sea. Exercise 2) Geothermal heating and cooling is having another revival due to rising energy and oil costs. Geothermal heating uses the natural temperature of the ground at about 10 feet and below which averages about 68 degrees F. Trenches are dug or holes are drilled and plastic tubing is placed in them. The tubing is then filled with a circulating fluid, usually just water and heated to the temperature of the ground during circulation. The fluid then goes to a heat exchanger where the heat of the fluid is exchanged to the air, which in turn circulates through the house to warm it. On average, a geothermal heat pump saves about 7 out of ten energy units that would go into operating a standard heat pump. The main additional cost of adding a geothermal heat pump is in the installation of the tubing in the trenches or holes, which can be expensive because it requires special machinery...

...1. Why do you think is it important for HR to be a strategic partner to the business? Strategic partners (also called strategic allies) are two or more companies that work together in joint ventures. Strategic partners often share long-term relationships and all parties within the partnership strive towards similar goals. Partners also do not get in the way of each other. Instead, they reinforce one another in order to obtain their set business objectives. For an HR department to be a strategic partner for a business, they must understand the strategic plan of that business, and vice-versa. Strategic planning produces fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what an organization is, what it does, and why it does it. It requires broad-scale information gathering, an exploration of alternatives, and an emphasis on the future implications of present decisions. Planning simply improves decision-making. And, all levels of management and partnership engage in planning. It is important for an HR department to be a strategic business partner because it allows them to be able to work in (and with) every other department in an organization. There’s even a strong need for the HR function to adopt a more strategic and business-like approach too. Due to this type of involvement, workers at all stages of employment will become familiar with, and trust, the HR team. Some corporations may even find it beneficial having HR members present in corporate business meetings, so that...

...1. The NLR Act makes it pretty clear that it is unlawful for an employer to encourage or discourage any union activity with the exception of legal union security agreement is enforced. The law states its basic purposes like employees shall have the right to self-organization, to form, or assist labor organizations, to bargain collectively, engaging in protected concerted activities, refusing to do any or all of these things. The NLRA forbids employers from interfering in any way with the employee’s participation of a union, coercing or threatening employees for engaging in union activity nor can they promise to keep employees from engaging in them (Employment Law Handbook, n.d.). Labor laws provide protection towards union employees who fight for wage inequalities, working conditions. As our textbook states on page 346, the National Labor Relations Act also known as Wagner Act requires employers to bargain in good faith over mandatory bargaining issues like working conditions, hours, wages, term and conditions of employment. Labor laws are authorized by the government to allow employees to not only join, but also to organize and/or create if they decide so. West University’s study shows that the Graduate Employee Organization (GEO) is affiliated with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, and used it as the collective bargaining representative. Although the employees are in its majority unionized, the non-union employees are not required to join in because Arizona is one of the...

...Mya Williams DeVry University MGMT 410 Professor Doreen Lawrence 03/10/13 Strategic Linkages 1. It’s important for HR to be a strategic partner to the business because you want the greatest chance of longevity in the business it needs to have a plan for the future. In the text for strategic direction-“Human resource linkage their needs to be mission, objective and goals, strategy, structure and people” (DeCenzo, 114). With these five organizational steps helps create order within each level of the business. HR should be responsible for creating and accomplishing strategic goals for the organization. They have the professional skills to provide proper training and develop skilled labor force. These task and efforts will help HR contribute to the success of the company. 2. The benefits the employees derive from this arrangement are training on the constant evolvement on technology. In the discussion we talked about the four functions of human resources management; staffing, training, motivation and maintenance. I feel the two main factors are training and motivation it’s critical for any employee to get the proper training especially to engage in the virtual world. Technology has created opportunities how we work and the way we work. Companies have gone the virtual route to reach a broad audience and also people are able to run businesses from their homes. This allows the HRM to focus more on giving educational attention to programs or machines to be used at their...

...Lomesh Patel 01/20/2013 MGMT – 410 Case Study: Social Media Policies 1) In Washington, a construction company called Rain City Contractors fired five employees for posting a video on YouTube in regards to dangerous work conditions. A video was posted in 2008 showing three employees voicing their concerns with the public of what it is like to work for this company. About two weeks later they were fired along with two people they thought were involved as well. Their work place conditions were horrible. They were never trained with the hazardous chemicals they worked with but they were forced to wear badges that stated they were certified to work with them. The NLRB determined the video was protected because the employees voiced concerns about safety, (Protected Concerted Activity). A complaint was issued for the case to appear in court. On the second day of trail, the company settled with the employees. 2) In order to play this role the HR function needs to be transformed. The standard HR department filters resumes, handles grievances, conducts training, purchases salary surveys and maybe has a diversity program. While this is a start, it is not strategic. This process becomes automated and bureaucratic and, as the world changes around it, obsolete. A strategic HR department is looking at the age make up at various levels of the firm, is looking to understand the generation differences and address them. A strategic HR function is working to make the firm a great...

...Ronald J. Downham MGMT-303 Week 5 Case Study Prof. Mayes 29 Nov 2014 1) What does this case imply about the supply of and demand for employees and the implications for businesses? This study implies that the demand for high quality high tech employees is high and the supply of these employees is low. There are more companies that need these types of employees than there are in the job market. What this does is forces the businesses to become more competitive for good talent. Google is one of the most sought after companies because of these employee perks. Google employees are extremely well fed, getting healthy and varied breakfast, lunch, and even dinner if they stay late, for free. There are also coffee and juice bars scattered throughout the campuses. According to the Management text, “If an employee wants to come to work in cargo shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops, they do and what attracts many talented employees to companies like these is the fact that they can set their own hours” (Management, 2014). 2) What’s the meaning behind the “search for the purple squirrel” in relation to spotting talent? Is this relevant to non-tech companies, as well? Discuss. A purple squirrel has come to mean the unobtainable. Just as a purple squirrel is almost impossible to find in the forest, the perfect job candidate is so unlikely to occur in real life that they are almost a fantasy. This doesn’t seem to be as relevant in non-tech companies though. Non-tech jobs are more abundant...

...Mid-Guard University Training Needs and Assessments Lamaas Lattimore-EL DeVry University MGMT-410 – Human Resource Management Instructor Quovella Maeweather-Spruill November 9, 2012 There was a major board meeting at Mid-Guard University. Internal Audit had just finished there quarterly audit of Accounts Payable and there has been reason for alarm. There appears that policy is not being followed in several of the cases that have been reported. Purchase Orders are being paid without approval signatures. The level of authority is not being verified and the company chart of accounts is not being followed at all. There were several violations of the Travel Policy. Signatures were not obtained from payee’s. Making the reimbursement in the eyes of the law invalid. Payments were made to individuals which is a major violation. The fact that someone performed a service for the University and was oaid without any taxes being withheld is a major violation of the tax laws. Now the amount that qualifies is more than 600 dollars but Mid-Guard strict policy is that no employee of the University shall reimburse a person for their services. The meeting led to the director of Accounts Payable being dismissed from her position. The decision not to overhaul Accounts Payable altogether was the factor of the union putting a stop to the dismissal of the whole department. The Assistant Directors were kept on and are expected to help lift...
