1. How easy was it to find the specific occupation you were looking for, and how comprehensive was the information provided about that occupation? I decided to look for the occupation that interested me the most, which is a Human Resource Manager. Given that “The O*NET program is the nation's primary source of occupational information and it contains information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors” (O*NET) I felt confident that I will find comprehensive information about the HR position. Finding information was very easy and I must say that I really enjoyed how well the website is organized it is very user friendly and within few clicks I found out every little bit of info that I was looking for. The information provided about my occupation was on relevant and gave a past and present view on what one can expect the demand to be in the future. It is very comprehensive and I was surprised of how much information is included in this particular job description. It was pleasant to see that even now at my current position and being in school obtaining my degree with Human Resources as my concentration that I am on the right track. My time is not being wasted and I am learning what is needed to obtain my future job.
2. What did you think of the occupations O*NET suggested as matching your skills? Was the occupation you are in or preparing for among those listed? In general the occupations I would expect to see were included on the list. The span of occupations was wide across many industries so it was interesting to see how the skills I’ve selected might apply through different industries and different types of occupations. Although the top occupation returned came as “Chief Executives” I have a long way still to be able to get there. As such the list returned might not be a good representation of appropriate occupations

...HWWhy do you think it is important for HR to be a strategic partner to the business? 1. I think it is important for HR to be a strategic partner to the business for many reasons. The first would be the fact that HR is suppose to have its best interests in the organization they are supporting so in order to maxamize how much the company succeeds the HR department should stratagize and work together with the company to have goals set and to make sure they are both on the same page. HR should be viewed as an organziation’s asset that if used correctly could not only help keep the company and their employees focused on their goals but also be a key player in the company’s success. If they work together they can create adequate programs while also being an asset in the design and development process of that organization. Alone a company or organization can only go so far but with the help and proper implementation of an HR department they can achieve more than they could have imagined. The HR department when used correctly can help with things like expansion of the business , the implementation of new products or services and even new technologies or applications. What benefits do you think the employees derive from this arrangement? 2. There are many benefits that the employees derive from this arrangement. First and foremost they could gain training and development being implemented. This gives the employees a chance to not only excel in their current position but if set up correctly...

...Prof. Boyd Smith MGMT410: Human Resource Management DeVry University 1/14/15 1. In this day and age, social media plays a big part in our lives. For this assignment, we were required to find an article where an employee was terminated for something posted on social media. While doing research, I found an article about a former KFC employee who was terminated for that reason. The former employee posted a picture of herself licking a plate of mashed potatoes. This photo quickly surfaced and was shared on the Facebook page of a lot of people. There were several comments from people wondering if these potatoes were severed to customers. A company representative said that the potatoes were not served to customers. 2. Personally, whether it was a joke or not, the employees behavior was unacceptable. I definitely would not want anyone joking around with the food I am going to eat. With all the violations fast food chains receive; the last thing a customer needs is an employee using food to get a quick laugh. 3. If this situation was to occur at a place where I worked, I am sure the rest of the employees would get their act together. At the end of the day, this is their place of employment and they probably have families to care for. They would definitely take their jobs more seriously. This situation would lead to better employee relations. 4. To prevent further situations like this, I would sit down with the current employees and make them aware of how something...

...1. If you were the human resources director at the casino, what should you have done prior to firing Steward to be sure you had all of your bases covered? If I were the human resources director at the casino, in order to ensure that the firing was justified and within the guidelines I would do a little research on the laws and the employee. First, as the director I must be very familiar with the employment and termination laws. For example, there have been many occasions where an employee’s conduct or performance has been in question. Problem is many employers lack the wisdom to carry out any disciplinary measures. In addition, knowledge of when or how to enforce the laws and practices will be key when a judgment must be made on an employee. Being a director at the casino comes with the responsibility of knowing your employees. Getting to know your employees will give you a better feel for any tendencies they might display. Then I would pull the persons personal work file. The file will present to you any positive or negative evaluations that have been documented on the worker. In addition it will also paint a picture of the employee, “Is this a model employee with good marks? Or are you looking at a habitual offender with a pattern of misconduct?” This will prove to be vital information in determining if the employee had any bad intensions or whether it was a lapse in judgment. Termination of a model employee without having the cold hard facts can have a negative effect on...

...Off-the-Job Behaviors Human Resource Management MGMT410 1. Do you believe Oiler’s employee rights were violated? Explain your position. I think that Amendment 1 of the United States Constitution say it best, “AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - AMENDMENT [I.] 2 Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”. http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/GPO-CONAN-1992/pdf/GPO-CONAN-1992-7.pdf. Mr. Peter Oiler certainly has unique situation that he/she has to contend with. But by virtue of the amount of negative publicity that the food chain, Winn Dixie would have to contend with, I think that they made a wise decision. Case-and-Point; say for instance, Mr. Oiler was on a normal outing and decided that he wanted to drink a little. He’s dress in his finest dress while at the Shady Grove Bar and Grill, when all of a sudden, someone from Winn Dixie recognizes him. They start a conversation and a fight ensues. Mr. Oiler and his co-worker are eventually pulled apart, but the damages are insurmountable. The owners of Shady Grove Bar and Grill, through a police report fine that Mr. Oiler is employed at Winn Dixie, and file a Class-Action Suit against the corporation. The fact of the matter is, no one cares who you are, until they find...

Concerted Activity

...Prof: Lawrence Katrina Whitsett MGMT410: Human Resource Management DeVry University September 13, 2015 Concerted Activity Facts about the Construction contractors in Lakewood, Washington: Five construction workers were fired (three of them) for making a video on YouTube complaining of their hazardous working conditions. The soil was contaminated with arsenic and other toxins. The construction workers were forced to wear badges stating they had been fully trained to handle hazardous materials. The NLRB received a complaint about the hazardous working conditions, and opened a hearing. The workers received full back pay from the date of being fired, and declining statement. The video was protected, because the employees voiced concerns about safety in the workplace. The public airing did not lose the Act’s protection. Decision of the NLRB Yes, I do agree with the NLRB. The workers condition violated them as contractors. The contractors were working with contaminated soil, and not fully trained on how to handle hazardous material. The contractors wanted someone to be aware of the treatment they were receiving. A cry for help. Decision in the case This could lead to making sure the company has a reputable person or outsource to come in and do proper training. The company needs to make sure each individual is properly trained per job duties. Testing the individuals to make sure he or she understands materials being presented for them to do. After passing test, receive...

Jva Corporation Stimulation

...JVA Corporation Simulation: Week-5 To: Robbin Churray By: Kirandeep Badesha Course: MGMT410 DeVry Online Session 2011Rob   Employees will lost bit in amenities and some restriction on the raise of wage and salaries. JVA corporation will save almost 2% to 3% part of their net income that is spent on perks and other amenities. It may affect to employees as they will suffer from raises and other incentives but they will get benefit too as JVA will not lay out of current workers. The implementation of new strategy can affect JVA corp. due to lack of incentives or raises because it can discourage to employees and their productivity and motivation may get low. The international employees will be part of this change also. Recession is affecting every nation so JVA need to implement the changes globally. It does not matter that employees are US based or have international location, the change of strategy will be same for all otherwise it can bring frustration amont other employers and employees. As JVA Corporation is facing 17% net lose in their income and demands to cut the perks from 8 to 5 % so it will be crucial to bring effective change in the compensation system of organization. The crucial aspect of the strategy is that the all the changes that have been mentioned in JVA co-operation will continue until the recession of economy get recovered. A Perky Way to Productivity

...Allison Wright MGMT410 Prof. Webb 12 February 2011 Week 6:  Textbook Case Study A Perky Way to Productivity 1. Human resource management is best described as the act of acquiring, developing and maintaining employees “to achieve the goals of the goals of an organization in an effective and efficient manner.” (Sadhuji, 2008). HRM achieves this through several forms of employee appreciation, including compensation, health benefits, and promotions. However, the benefits that a company offers can mean the difference between having a devoted employee and one who will be willing to leave once a better opportunity arrives. A sound compensation package is often more attractive than a high paying salary. HRM needs to apply the needs of the employees and analyze how it will also benefit the organization. Basic benefits such as health, vision and dental benefits, or 401K matching are no longer the only benefits that keep employees content, and this can affect their productivity. By structuring a benefits program that goes beyond basic needs, such as Zappos.com’s on-site healthcare, employees will feel more like assets instead of just workers. This will lead to a more productive workplace and a more profitable bottom line for the organization. The ever-changing trend of employee benefits “requires benefit staff to take a more strategic and consultative approach to their jobs.” (Hackett, 1996) This is especially true for the new aging workforce of baby...

Hello

...O*Net Project Mariah Munson MGMT410: Human Resource Management DeVry University Date: March 22, 2015 This project is interesting because I had to something similar for my senior project in high school. I answered every question honestly and truthful to best of my knowledge and I still got similar answers to what I got 2 years ago. It really makes me wonder if I am going into the right career or if I should change careers. The two picks with my interests are Meeting, Convention, & Event Planners and Human Resources Managers. Meeting, Convention, & Event Planners, you need to be able to listen to others, not interrupt, and asking good questions. You need to have patience and knowledge of what they are trying to describe for to you. You need to be able to picture things in your head and how will they look in a room. You also need to be professional while talking to others, you need to be able to except change based on other people's actions, and you also need to have an eye for detail and when you or someone notice a problem you need to be quick on your feet and figuring out the best way to solve it. Most of these jobs are offered back east but Montana, Colorado, and Nevada have opening on the west cost. The average salary for a event planner is $46,000. That’s is about $22 per hour at the most you would be making. For me to be able to live in Utah and it is one of cheaper states to live in with just supporting myself I need to make at least $20,000...

...Strategic Linkages Human Resource Management MGMT410   1. Why do you think it is important for HR to be a strategic partner to the business? Whenever an organization no matter how big or small makes its strategic decision to employ a sizable portion of its workforce from the contingency ranks, other Human Resources Management issues come to the head. This may include having virtual employees available whenever needed, or providing schedulling options that meet their needs, and making decisions about whether benefits will be offered to the contingent workforce. No organization can make the transition to a contingent workforce without sufficient planning. As such, when these strategic decisions are made, HRM must be an active partner in the discussions. After all, it is HRM’s responsibility to locate these temporary workers and bring them into the organization. Just as HRM has played an integral role in recruiting full-time employees, so too will it play a major part in securing needed just-in-time talent. Many companies today recognize the importance of people in meeting their goals. HRM must therefore balance two primary responsibilities: assisting the organization in its strategic direction and representing and advocating for the organization’s employees. Clearly, HRM has a significant role in today’s organizations. HRM must be forward thinking. HRM must not simply react to what “management” states. Rather, HRM must take the lead in assisting management with the...

O*Net Resource Center Analysis

...Week 3 O*NET Resource Center Student’s Name University MGMT410, Professor XYZ, Date Learning Questions Question 1: How easy was it to find the specific occupation you were looking for, and how comprehensive was the information provided about that occupation? I currently hold an operations role and searching for “Operations Manager” was relatively easy on O*NET. “The O&NET program is the nation’s primary source of occupational information and it contains information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors” (O*NET, n.d.). Once a person familiarizes with the O*NET Content Model, which is its conceptual foundation, the search engines become easy to understand. The top two search returns for me included Wind Energy Operations Manages and General & Operations Managers. Interesting fact emerged by reviewing both that gave good representation of skills, overall knowledge, abilities and work activities necessary to be successful in these roles that correspond to my experience with what the role demands in my current work environment. For operations type of positions it is imperative to be able to work independently, be initiative, rely heavily on analytical thinking and have the leadership skills that take charge and can motivate other team members. It was comforting to see that the real world experience matches the O*NET comprehensive information provided. Certain discrepancies are expected as each industry is slightly different but in general...

...Wk 2 Study: Social Media Policies, Concerted Activity and HR Management MGMT410 Human Resource Management 1.) Ethically, and in the spirit capitalism, few should question the right of an employer to discipline an employee who used Facebook, Twitter or other social media to complain about his employer, employer's business practices or to make disparaging comments about his supervisor or co-workers. As an employee, you represent your place of employment. Typically, there are routes to pursue complaints. If not, then it is just a matter of being an adult and discussing the issue to come to a reasonable conclusion. In this case, we will look at an unfair labor practice (ULP) charge filed by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in October of 2010. American Medical Response (AMR), an ambulance service in Connecticut, fired an employee for posting deprecating comments about her supervisor on Facebook. Other employees joined in the conversation and added comments of their own. The NLRB alleged that the employee's comments were protected "concerted activity" under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) Section 7 of the NLRA states: "Employees shall have the right to self-organization, to form, join, or assist labor organizations, to bargain collectively through representatives of their own choosing, and to engage in other concerted activities for the purpose of collective bargaining or other mutual aid or protection, and shall also have the right to refrain...
