...Week Seven Andrew R. Reyna MGT/210 June 10, 2012 Kathy Willis Week Seven After completing exercise 15-3 in our text, I was rather astonished by the results. The test indicated that I was 84 percent of a leader and 16 percent of a supervisor. While completing this test some of the questions I found to rather hardlined and somewhat biased in the way they were presented and often times the questions were too black and white. Honestly, I find myself to be more of mixture between a leader and supervisor rather than a leader, nevertheless, I digress. I feel as though being a leader, as indicated by the test, the strengths that I would use to approach two of the supervisory responsibilities, would be fairness, patients, ability to find new ways to approach problems, gathering the correct resources, and my cunningness to overstep bureaucracy and see things for what they are. The two supervisory responsibilities that I use my strengths towards would be Demonstrating Communication and Improving Productivity as a Team. I feel as though, after taking the test, that I am a mixture of a leader and supervisor. My leadership consists of being able to approach things as a captain of a ship. This type of leadership holds many things sacred such as, honor, respect, making swift and calculating decisions and more importantly have the confidence of your crew or the people you lead. This type of leadership keeps the big picture constantly in front of him or her while at the same time...

...March 23, 2012 MGT/210 Supervision and Leadership Exercise 10-2: OJT Presented to: Instructor unknown University of Phoenix Keeping It Cute (KIC) Fashion Inc. Orientation and Training In 2005, an 18-year-old woman left her home in Bowie, MD for the promise of Los Angeles. She arrived with only $2500 dollars in her purse. In the beginning she struggled looking for a job and a place to stay and things were hard. To make ends meet, she worked as fashion designer’s assistant full time and a waitress part time. She was able to put up a few dollars and finally get a place of her own. Things were not easy for Kytemique but she always manage to save money and move forward. She met an older woman name Sonja Jackson and they had a lot in common and she explained the business to her so they decided to open up a boutique together. Sonja helped Kytemique out a lot. In 2008, the two opened their first boutique called, Keeping It Cute in West Los Angeles, CA. This was the start of what would become the retail legend of KIC Fashion Inc. From the beginning, Kytemique’s business philosophy was based on exceptional service, selection, quality and value. The company built a devoted customer base; and in 2009, the partners added their second store. In 2010, Kytemique’s partner retired and sold her share of the company to Kytemique. The company soon grew to become the largest independent clothing chain in the United States. By 2011, KIC Fashion had four stores in Washington...

...Exercise 15-3 Anthony M. Petini Exercise 15-3 Supervision and Leadership University of Phoenix Exercise 15-3 My questionnaire in the end was 40 percent leader and 60% supervisor. This did not come as a surprise to me as I felt from the beginning I would be around half and half of each general area. In driving to lead and create an environment where all respect each other and grow together, I find that even not being in a supervisory position, I still bring people together. There are a lot of things that go into being a good supervisor, one of the most prominent being improving employee relations. The reason for this is many reasons. Developing employee relations requires the respect of your employees. In order to promote these relations you need to also be positive and I feel a perfect mix of leadership and supervisory attributes help this. I believe that being split almost down the middle is a direct reflection of how I see myself in leadership as well. I would promote good employee or relations by first earning respect. No leader in the world can promote a happy and healthy work environment if they do not first have the respect of those employed under him. This is true in every leadership role anywhere you go though. In a church with a crooked pastor without respect of the congregation, the church would eventually fall as you look to the pastor for guidance. In a home without respect for the parent, how would...

...Exercise 10-2 Orientation is the role that introduces new and current employees to a new position or new to an organization and the job. In larger organizations, the supervisor, along with human resources share the responsibilities of orientating new employees. Smaller organizations usually have the supervisor conducting interviews and the orientation process (Ch. 10. Supervision: Key Link to Productivity. Rue and Byars (2004). Training employees consist of five steps. Getting the employees ready to learn, break down the work into components and identify the key points, demonstrate the proper way the work is to be done, and let the trainees perform the work, and put the trainees on their own gradually (Ch. 10. Supervision: Key Link to Productivity. Rue and Byars (2004). The purpose of orientating and training are to see where the employee stands on skills, information, and attitudes that are required for the job, and where improvements are needed. Placement tests in the hiring process are also crucial. These tests help to evaluate the employee on a more personal level and decide which department of a business they would be more effective (Ch. 10. Supervision: Key Link to Productivity. Rue and Byars (2004). After the hiring process has taken place. Then the supervisor and training personnel can than move forward with the three day orientation and training process. Classroom Training: The first day of the new orientation and training process for all new sales clerks will...

...Capstone: Week Nine Checkpoint By: Jessica Swann MGT/210 Ms. Tara Wells January 26th, 2012 In my opinion, to be an essential supervisor of a small, medium, or large company, you must possess certain traits or abilities. First, you must be organized in time management because this is an essential part of being a supervisor. You must be able to make necessary decisions and changes in order to keep your production running harmoniously. For example, you have an assembly line in which you have 20 employees inserting different components into desktop computers. Each person inserts 2 parts into the housing as it goes down the line and after the 20th person installs their components, the computer moves on to another line. Today you have 3 people on dayshift that call off work; which means you have to fill the three openings in order to keep production running. What do you do? Option #1 is to have 3 people from other departments come over and fill the spots except it leaves those departments short by one person. Now this is a feasible idea providing the other departments are not already short staffed. Also it will shutdown your production line until you find the people willing to switch. Option #2 would be to call a “temp service” for the fill in’s except it would take too long to get people in place and then you have to train them. Production will be cut by probably 75%. Not a feasible idea. Option #3 would be to have 3 people stay over 4 hours from the...

...Herbal Supplements The FDA should regulate herbal supplements as it ensures safety for the consumer. If taken properly, herbal supplements have great benefits. The problem is that there simply is not enough regulation of the herbal supplements. Many herbal supplements can be dangerous if taken incorrectly. What’s worse, people simply do not have enough information about the benefits and risks of herbal supplements. A great example of the lack of regulation is overuse of Ephedra. A while back, people started taking mass amounts of Ephedra in order to lose weight. It ended in a great amount of deaths, causing the FDA to take measures against makers of medicines containing Ephedra. Because it was considered an herbal supplement, it did not have the same scrutiny as synthetic drugs. Herbal supplements can be just as powerful as synthetic drugs, so the same vigilance in regulation should apply. Also, harmful ingredients sometimes end up in herbal supplements, which present an entirely new risk. If herbal supplements were more closely monitored, there would be a better chance of preventing this from happening. Because of the lack of regulation, consumers do not have any assurance that what they are buying is safe. Consumers need that assurance, especially when it comes to health products. There also is not very much awareness about herbal supplements. People do not realize how powerful some herbal supplements are. Many people hold the mistaken belief that herbal supplements...

I scored 76% for leadership and 24% for supervisor. These results put me in the leader category. I am not surprised with the results because I believe in motivating people and teaching them the skills required to do their job. I have had several managers say they picked me to train or teach people how to do the job because of the way I explain the process. The managers have also said that I am very thorough and patient in how I do things and how I treat the person. I am also not surprised to see that I fit the definition or explanation of the leadership style listed in the text. I am a self-starter, I find work fulfilling, and I enjoy teaching co-workers the skills necessary when they need help with achieving their goals. It makes me happy to see people develop an understanding of the job requirements and what they need to do to meet them. Still, according to Rue and Byars (2004) in Ch. 7 of Supervision: Key Link to Productivity, “failure to delegate is probably the most frequent reason that supervisors fail in their jobs” (p. 117). Some supervisors are reluctant to delegate at all; others do not quite know how to delegate, or they are unsure regarding which tasks should be delegated. Recall the basic steps in the delegation process from Ch. 7 of your text as you formulate your answers to this assignment. Resource:Ch. 7 (p. 126) of Supervision: Key Link to Productivity Follow the steps listed below to complete this 700- to 1,050-word assignment: Read Exercise 7-2: “In Basket.” Join the discussion thread to which your instructor has assigned you. Discuss, with your assigned classmates, which items in this exercise should be delegated and which should be acted upon. Choose one of the items on which you and your assigned classmates agreed and one item on which you and your assigned classmates disagreed. A good orientation program will help to ensure new employees are up to speed faster and will better align them into positions in the organization in that the need is greater. With this in mind, I have designed a three day training and orientation plan to completely and effectively train new salesclerks. Training will start at 8:00a.m. and last until 5:00p.m. every day for a period of three days. When new hires arrive, they will be given an outline of the training process that briefly describes items to be covered during training, an employee handbook, and all required paperwork. Each section of the training process will be explained in detail by the supervisor. Below is an outline of a three-day orientation and training session that is to be handed out to each new employee before the orientation and training process begins. ...Employees’ Union Elaina Griffin MGT/210 03/26/2012 Melinda Murphree Employees’ Union As a supervisor I got news that the unionized employees were getting ready to take their complaints to upper management. After checking into the complaints, I found out what they were looking for and came up with some solutions to please both management and the unionized employees. The first of which is better and more equipped lunch room facilities. The second is a better percentage of dental coverage. The third is to have their union dues deducted before taxes and or the company pays for half of the employee’s yearly union dues. For the first item I would propose the company provide more modern lunch room facilities. This means better equipment and vending machines with healthy selections with all proceeds going toward a charity of the employee’s choice. The second is the employees are asking for better dental coverage, asking for 100% coverage. I would first consider that the company is already paying 25% of all union employees’ dental coverage. I would first propose the company only raise that to 40%, meaning the employees contribution will be 60% instead of 75%. The reason I would propose this is so the company will also be able to pay half of all their union employees’ yearly union dues. This not only benefits the company but the employees. The first will create a tax write off for the company by just replacing a few lunch room appliances. All of these...
