...“I am an expert and I am a professional”-Soldiers Creed. The military has been working hard over last few decades to trademark our organization as a profession. Many have heard the horror stories of Vietnam Veterans returning home after fulfilling their duty to remain unemployed. I believe that branding the military as a profession adds marketability, value, and purpose for Soldiers. According to the article, ‘The Profession of Arms’, a profession delivers expertise in a certain field. The military provides our clients, the American people, a specialized force tasked with the duty of safeguarding this nation. How does an organization become a profession? The workforce must produce professionals. Soldiers must be subject matter experts in security. The military has revamped its doctrine on training Soldiers. Noncommissioned Officer Education Systems (NCOES) is the new wave of training programs. These programs prepare the Solider with basic Soldiering skills along with a wide variety of high level skill sets to include; leadership skills, critical thinking, and decision making. NCOES provides both online instruction, Structured Self Development (SSD), along with, resident courses offered at military schoolhouses to train the Solider. What does this do for the Human Resources (HR) Noncommissioned Officer (NCO)? Improvement in the...

...The military, in my eyes, is one of the most important professions that America has. When asking the question: Is the military an honorable profession? The answer is an obvious yes. The military is an honorable profession for numerous reasons. For example, if the United States did not have a military to protect the citizens, then most of the citizens would feel unprotected and vulnerable. Military professionals help to keep these fears away and protect the United States on a day to day basis. The military is arguably the most important aspect of our country, because these military professionals are fighting for our freedom day in and day out. There are some United States citizens the think the military is an unnecessary resource in today's society. These people do not understand just how necessary the military actually is. The citizens would no longer be safe if the military would cease to exist. Today's society should make every person in the world feel unsafe at all times by ISIS and other terrorist groups. The United States military helps us Americans to limit these fears and help us to feel protected. As we get deeper into our lives, we have a greater and greater appreciation for our military and the things they do for us. These people love what they do and put their lives on the line while doing it. Although technically speaking their profession isn't “work” it is still the most important profession of them all. I could not imagine living a life in today's society without...

...moments in Russian history. Beginning as an effort to modernize the country’s military, as the era progressed the reforms expanded, instigating economic development, governmental modernization, intellectual reorientation and social reconstruction.1 The injection of European practices into Russia arguably set the precedence for the onslaught of a top down modernization that has since been a trait of Russian state development, as well as illuminating the beginning of the transition into a form of Russian modernity. The geographical historian Dennis Shaw, reiterates this by suggesting Peter exposed Russia “to the ideas of the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution. Building on the achievements of his father, Peter launched a thoroughgoing reform or modernization of his realm with the aim of transforming it into a major European state.”2 In order to comprehend this transformation of the Russian empire, an appreciation of meaning of the term ‘empire’ is required. Stephen Howe suggests that ‘an empire is a large, composite, multiethnic or multinational political unit, usually created by conquest, and divided between a dominant center and subordinate, sometimes far distant, peripheries.’3 While Howe’s definition provides a coherent basis from which to judge the concept of Empire from a modern day perspective, the question of the transformation of the concept of empire within Russia requires an appreciation of what the concept was considered as within Russia prior to the era of Peter’s...

This past Saturday, at Lion’s Park here in Shakopee, we had our first annual Military Appreciation Day. Shakopee’s mayor and one of Scott County Commissioner’s were 2 of our key note speakers. I am here asking for support from the Shakopee school board to partner with our organization to provide the support and service the children of our deployed service members desperately need. They not only need it while the military member is deployed, but even more so upon their return. Military Operation Kids are available to provide free “Hidden Heroes” workshops. They build awareness about the uniqueness of military youth as they go through the stages of the...

...were pleasing to employees as the COLA began to phase out. More attractive to the employee was the opportunity to be compensated more often than once a year with an ineffective form of benefit as COLA. In all actually, the COLA was a contradiction to its name and purpose. Cost of living payouts were not equally proportioned with the Cost of living increase. As a result employees began to question the employers with “What have you done for me lately?” As I began to ponder the actions and reactions to the payments of the cost of living allowances (COLA), when compared to employee incentives, the incentives became more appealing to me and I am sure is the case with many employees. I began to reflect back to when I was in the military as a service member and as an army wife, and COLA was something we looked forward to receiving with each new set of orders from base to base. Then I consider the bonuses that were also provided or offered for things like...

...which I planned, organized, and collaborated with academic and community professionals to create Enterprise State Community College’s first Veterans Day ceremony. The project included collaboration with the college’s choir and fine arts department, Alabama Aviation Center director who donated four airplane noses, local radio host and personality who narrated the event, Enterprise High School JROTC who presented the colors, and local U.S. Army surplus store owner who provided uniforms and artifacts. Showcased in the event were reproductions I had created of historic military aviation artwork which veterans signed to create a lasting memorial. The purpose of the Veterans Day project was two-fold. I wanted to share with my community the inspiring perspective of America’s wars as told by military aircraft nose art and take them on a walk through history. At the same time, I wanted to use the...

...regarded as one of the greatest of America’s 20th century writers, primarily as a novelist. Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Cicero, Illinois. ...reason below unemployed is enlisted military service. “Every man, every woman who has to take up the service of government, must ask themselves two questions: 'Do I love my people in order to serve them better? Am I humble and do I listen to everybody, to diverse opinions in order to choose the best path?’ If you don't ask those questions, your governance will not be good.” (Pope Francis) Knowing this, one would hope enlisting in the military would be the best way to serve yourself, your family, your home and most of all your country. The concept of enlisting will be discussed, the reasons for considering the services, and the benefits of doing so. Enlisting in the Military Today Imagine graduating High school and the next day you have career minded job with steady pay and all the experience you need to grow within your company. Wow, I also realized I have a medical benefits and general purpose to life. ...Would the reinstitution of the draft end the fake adoration of the military members? If there is a draft then they would all have to work for their heroic title. Being in the military is a job, therefore, the word soldier would regain its meaning that has been lost over the years. Not all veterans want to be praised or labeled because doing so separates them from everyone else. Harry Hershey says that the only way to solve problems would be to inducing the draft. The authors Andrew Bacevich, William Deresiewicz, and Clay Bonnyman Evans also have similar views and agree that instating the draft would be helpful. I say to avoid the separation of veterans from society we should reinstitute the draft. The author of “Today’s Soldiers are Proud...

...Video games have been and continue to be a great part of my life. Ever since the tender age of three I have been fascinated by the interactivity and the captivating graphics displayed by video games. I have developed and retained an appreciation for the capacity that many well developed video games have to blend competitiveness, the need for intellectual dexterity, and pure entertainment. I have long understood the task of producing a game with such comprehensive quality as both an art and a science. In any case, my video game passion has slowly but surely charmed me into learning much about the philosophy of video games, their design and development, and especially the history of video games. Despite my life-long passion with video games, I began a true self-propelled academic investigation into the world of video games only a few years ago. I remember quite vividly that this intellectual journey into the world of video games was prompted by a friend of mine who was intrigued by the fact that I was often engulfed in the world of video games. During those days I was younger and consequentially much more immature than now. Not only did I enjoy video games, I spent a great deal of the few funds which I had on purchasing new games, much of my free time playing games, and a lot of time also discussing video games in general. I was not officially addicted; I always knew when enough was enough and when I needed to spend time completing school work, saving, or spending money to make...

...O'Brien's story doesn't focus on whether the events were accurate but the result war has had on mankind. It is the content of the story that makes this piece timeless and true to the experience of military in combat. For example, the author uses facts to create a setting. He explains in detail what the soldiers carry, such as Dave Jensen who carried," three pairs of socks and a can of Dr. Scholl's foot powder. . . then he was shot". Details like these are the epitome of mundane events mixed with philosophical thoughts, and tons of detail. From the guilt, grief, and depression to the M16's, comic books, and tranquilizers they carry, this story has it all. Although no one really knows if these events are true, the reader can appreciate the literary range the author reaches. O'Brien's matter of fact approach and character formation is like the Basketball Diaries but with PTSD. Young boys, pushed into war, during the Summer of Love, and everything is confusing: “I was no soldier. I hated Boy Scouts. I hated camping out. I Hated dirt and tents and mosquitoes. The sight of blood made me queasy, And I couldn't tolerate authority, and I didn't know a rifle from a slingshot. I was a liberal, for Christ sake"(11). Throughout the story the author exposes the horrors these soldiers encounter day to day. Their only way of coping with the guilt of fallen men was to burn it. Burn love...

...Amelia Edwards ENG 105 Composition 1 August 12, 2012 Kathy Grismore Analyzing a Concept The concept of marriage is currently a hot topic and it basically boils down to different religious viewpoints. There has been a controversy with Chick-fil-A restaurants in the past weeks. This controversy began when Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy said he supported the “biblical definition of the family unit”. The controversy caused opposition from both sides. Christians rallied and supported Chick-fil-A on customer appreciation day and gay-right advocates boycotted the restaurant chains. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance against Defamation (GLAAD) supported a “National Same-Sex Kiss Day” the Friday following Chick-fil-A’s customer appreciation day. Mr. Cathy’s simple expression of his biblical belief created tons of controversial comments. Like, Mr. Cathy everyone has their opinion and beliefs on same-sex marriage. Christian’s belief what the bible teaches. Marriages should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral (Hebrews13:4). I happen to share the same belief that Mr. Cathy does. Why is it that in this controversy Christians cannot voice their opinion without reprimand? Some of the consequences from this controversy are the removal of some of Chick-fil-A’s restaurants. Some cities and college campus’ want Chick-fil-A restaurants removed. The University of Kansas does not want Chick-fil-A’s contract...

...Chile began to thrive. Chile now boasts an economic model which encourages economic freedom, competitiveness, and investment. This model has allowed for Chile to have the highest per capita income in Latin America. Although Chile has had successes with its economy, it is still considered a developing country. Large efforts have been made for the past century to secure development. While these efforts have brought Chile closer to its goal, high inequality and a relative dependency on copper prices has made it difficult for any of these efforts to have a final impact allowing for the actual transition to developed status. This paper analyzes the timeline of Chile’s economy, focusing specifically on the period of high growth of 1985 to present day and any recessions that fell between these dates. It also aims to highlight the successes and failures of the policy reforms of the past as a way to determine what will be effective in the future for allowing Chile to achieve its goal of development. Before the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500’s, the Inca ruled the northern part of Chile while the Mapuche inhabited the central and southern parts. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, victory over the Spanish was not successfully achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific, Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia. This victory won Chile its presence in the northern regions. It was not until the 1880s that the Mapuche and the Incas were brought under central government control. By...

...Martha Settle was from Norristown, Pennsylvania, and a retired history professor worked at the Bowie State college and Howard university. When she was young, she did not compromise with the reality of black females. She earned master’s degree in history, and applied for a teaching job. Soon, she encountered walls against blacks, so changed work to a statistical clerk. Again, she was frustrated by institutional racism, and volunteered for the Women’s Auxiliary Corps (WAC). One day, she was rejected to get on a train to Chicago for her new assignment. It was resolved later by the military police, but the train conductor discriminated her based on her race. Lieutenant Settle operated her all-black unit of medical technicians in Chicago without difficulties for the rest of her service period, and tried to teach young blacks about history of African Americans after the war at the Bowie State and Howard...
