Minorities are not looking for 'payback'

The northern US has always been dominated by Caucasians, but it has changed over time. Now it is Asians, African Americans and Latinos who form the bulk of the US population. Even the President is a foreigner. But will this affect the white peoples' lives, or will everything remain as it is? On May 24th 2012, Ruben Navarrette Jr., a CNN contributor and nationally syndicated columnist, published the commentary "Minorities are not looking for 'payback'" on CNN.com. In the commentary, Navarrette argues against that the increasing percentage of coloured people in the US will have any consequences for the white population, but is he right or is his argumentation unsound? The commentary is composed like an article with a headline, picture, by-line, body text and so forth. It is, however, a commentary, as it shows a certain persons points of view. It is therefore very subjective and expresses his opinions about an actual topic. As soon as you read the headline, "Minorities are not looking for 'payback'", Navarrette's opinion is revealed. By saying that, he defends the minorities and makes them innocent. The picture of a coloured woman, who has just given birth, helps him emphasize his statement, because she smiles, the flowers in the window are beautiful and it all looks harmonious. It appeals highly to pathos. He wants the receiver, mainly women, to empathize with the newborn and its mother. Navarrette uses the body text to argue and to comment on several quotations from an expert and from a radio host, who he violently disagree with. Navarrette's main contention is that the conservative radio talk show host, Rush Limbaugh, is wrong. Limbaugh claims that David Bostis' statements, "The Republicans' problem is that their voters are white, aging and dying off." and "there will come a time when (Republicans) suffer catastrophic losses with the realization of the population changes," are stated to warn the republicans, even though David Bostis is an expert in his area, which Navarrette also emphasizes to uplift his ethos. Navarrette disagree with Limbaugh's statement, and he argues against it by saying that it is a fact, and not a threat. This appeals to logos, which he uses diligently through the whole text. He also supplies by saying, "Elected officials, media companies and the business communities can put of thinking about the future, but they can't escape it.". By that he means that it is not something that can be discussed. It is becoming a reality. Navarrette's excessive use of subjectivity can also be seen later. He states another contention relating to Limbaugh's comment, where he argues for that the minority want payback. But Navarrette clearly disagree, which can be seen in the following part,

"What needs to change is this kind of thinking. It's total nonsense. In nearly 25 years of writing about politics, race and ethnicity, I've never heard any member of a minority group talking about how they're looking forward to 'payback' once they're in the majority, Not one."

He prove his argument by using his high ethos, saying that he has been in the politic, race and ethnicity business for many years. He wants to make sure that his status is underlined, to promote his reliability, but also to make up for his poor argumentation, for it has not been properly reasoned. Navarrette understands how to make the receiver agree with his points of view. He use effects such as rhetorical questions, "what's wrong with that?", negative connotations such as "threat" and "he went ballistic" , disproof, "(...)he has it all wrong", but also the three appeal forms that I mentioned earlier. All these tools helps Navarrette to convince the receiver that he is right. The main problem with Navarrette's commentary is his poor argumentation. He keeps arguing that Limbaugh is wrong, but he does not say why. I also think that it is important to mention that Navarrette is a minority too, as his father was Mexican, and we therefore want to read the text carefully, for he might be partial, which can also be seen when he claims that companies will keep appealing to the white population, even though they are becoming the minority. I consider him wrong as he has no proof for his argument and furthermore will companies always strive for their own interests, or they would not be able to compete. He is, however, right in many of his statements as he includes actual facts such as birth rate and median age to argue from and the numbers say it all. The minorities are becoming the majority, so if you read the text while paying attention to his subjectivity and at times poor argumentation, the commentary works fine. In conclusion, the increasing percentage of coloured people might actually have an influence, on the white people's lives. Navarrette's argumentation skills are therefore not perfect, but he manage to do it in a way that makes the receiver adaptable to his own points of view, which is why you have to be critical while reading it. He does, however, present some sensible argumentation with actual facts as a support. Now only the future can determine whether Navarrette is right or not.

Diversity

...Keller graduate school of management, Gm591 Mamun Chowdhury (Research question: How do differing perspectives affect out views of workforce diversity?) Introduction: Diversity relates to gender, age, language, ethnicity, cultural background, disability, sexual orientation or religious belief, including that people are different in other respects such as educational level, job function, socio-economic background, personality profile, marital status and whether or not one has family. Diversity and demographic differences can impact individual behavior by creating conflict in the workplace. The success of an organization depends on the workforce of the organization. A workforce made up of diverse individuals from different backgrounds can bring the best talent to an organization. Today, there are more and more ethnic people joining the workforce of the United States. Since the United States is considered the land of opportunity, more people from different backgrounds have migrated to our country over the past 100+ years to obtain work. Now, due to an increase in globalization and companies becoming more diverse, we are seeing even more people of ethnic backgrounds relocating to the United States for opportunities. With the increase in education, this is bringing forth many individuals of whom tend to have a great deal of input into organizations that otherwise would not have happened. These individuals bring a vast array...

Oj Simpson Case Study

...brutal police arrest of Rodney King, which was recorded by a video camera. After justifying the police officers involved in the arrest, the city erupted into unrest in 1992. According to a survey in the completion of the day October 3, 1995, 73% of Americans agreed with the prosecution, and 27% were against it: statistics reflect the then relationship between the white majority and colored minority. Among the 12-member jury at the trial was 8 black women and one black man, one Hispanic and two white women only. Thus, 83% of a jury made up of colored Americans. Just as the not-guilty verdicts in the trial of four LAPD officers accused of savagely beating Rodney King had outraged many Americans in 1992, the verdict in the Simpson case proved equally controversial. Predictably, the reaction broke down along racial lines. Many African Americans focused on the history of police brutality against minorities and concluded that it was likely that Simpson had been caught up in a racist conspiracy engineered by the LAPD. In response, some commentators suggested that the Simpson verdict was a payback for the King verdict. In setting Simpson free, it was suggested, the predominantly African American jury had tried to even the score. In contrast, most white Americans were convinced that Simpson had committed the murders. Cochran's blatant playing of the "race card" throughout the trial was dismissed as an emotional tactic that should not have been allowed in a court of law. Many feminists...

...analysis. To calculate WACC we must first find the expected return on share i E(Ri), using the securities market line equation, as follows: E(Ri) = RF + βi (E(RM) - RF) = 3% + 1.2 (13% - 3%) = 15% E(Ri) = expected return on share i E(RM) = expected return on the market = (Market risk premium + the risk free rate of return) = 13% RF = risk-free rate of return = 3% βi = beta of share i =1.2 As such, WACC can be calculated using the following equation: WACC = [D/(D+E)*RD](1-T) + [E/(D+E)*RE] = [40%*6%(1-28%)] + [60%*15%] = 10.728% D = value of total debt E = value of shareholders’ equity RD = cost of debt RE = cost of equity T = corporate tax rate b) NPV, IRR, & Payback Period Assumptions: - Generally speaking, because of difficulties related to identifying costs with particular activities and determining the future benefits, all R&D costs are expensed when incurred. They do not become part of the capitalised investment asset. The Kite Runner Argumentative Essay

...actions of his home country must have left an impression on him. It is such a great read because among many other themes such as betrayal, redemption, bullying, inhumanities of revolution, discrimination, loyalty, hypocrisy, horrors of rapes etc. the main focus of this story is of a man who is haunted by his past demons. We see in some of the opening lines of the novel, “I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975… That was a long time ago, but it’s wrong what they say about the past, I’ve learned, about how you can bury it.  Because the past claws its way out.” These opening lines gets the ball rolling on what is to come and to be expected from the story, of possibly an aged man who is looking back at the past and justifying how it has made him the way that he is to date. The setting vividly takes place in the disorderly country of Kabul, Afghanistan in the 20th century. Hosseini, through the character of Amir, does an excellent job describing the chaotic setting in contrast to any other parts of the western world such as Europe or North America. In this research paper I’ll be focusing on the following contents; plot summary, major character analysis, themes, motifs and the conclusion. Plot summary: The story starts off with Amir...

To What Extent Can “Ethnic Cleansing” in Bosnia Be Attributed to the Manipulative Influence of Elites?

...what extent can “ethnic cleansing” in Bosnia be attributed to the manipulative influence of elites? In the years before the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1990-91, ethnic relations were neighbourly and cooperative. However, Yugoslavia had been made up of six republics and it was a multi-ethnic country in which ‘nations and nascent states did not coincide’. Bosnia in particular was multi-ethnic. Its population consisted of Serbs, Croats and Muslims. There was undoubtedly potential for ethnic conflict and with the failure of communism and the disintegration of Yugoslavia, ethnic relation deteriorated rapidly. This was in large part due to the manipulative influence of elites who sought to establish nation states. Serbian nationalists looking to create a “Greater Serbia”, and Croatian nationalists attempting to establish a “Greater Croatia” manipulated ethnic relations with repetitive propaganda and “expert” opinion. Added to this, the fear and uncertainty created by the disintegration itself was a factor that led to ethnic cleansing, spawning nationalist ideologies and giving credibility rumours spread by elites. Furthermore, a history of ethnic cleansing in the Balkans made the transition from nationalism to ethnic cleansing short and easy, as well as making people more receptive to the influence of elite propaganda. Existing communal conflicts in Bosnia were also in small part responsible for the levels of ethnic cleansing however these were exaggerated and intensified again...

Is Affirmative Action Really Reverse Racism

...According to the Miriam-Webster dictionary, affirmative action is defined as “an active effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of members of minority groups and women” (Miriam). Many people feel that affirmative action is necessary to either counteract injustices or ensure the advancement of certain minorities. There are four justifications generally pointed out by affirmative action exponents. These are racism, poverty, diversity, and the problem of underrepresentation. Supporters point out that many blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans live in substandard housing, go to substandard schools, and live in crime ridden neighborhoods. They also claim that they are targets of daily racism, hindering their chances for advancement. Proponents point to small numbers of these minorities in certain desirable jobs (i.e. CEOs of corporations and high elected office) as evidence of underrepresentation of minorities and a need for diversity both in the workplace and in higher education. There are a number of different levels of affirmative action, including quotas, preferences, and outreach, in lessening order of severity. Quotas, also called “set asides”, deal with having a definite amount of jobs or college spots reserved for a particular group. For example, if a university admits 1000 students every year and sets aside 150 seats that are open to blacks only, this is considered a quota. A perfect illustration of a quota would be the 1977 Supreme Court case...

Why the United Kingdom ‘’Opted Out’’ of the Emu

...Briefly outline the reasons why the United Kingdom ‘’opted out’’ of the European Monetary and Economic Union (EMU). In retrospect, was this a good decision for British business? The European Monetary and Economic Union A giant step in the history of a unified Europe has been the creation of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Coordination of national economic policies is anticipated to be fair to all EU member states in terms of them all sharing a single market and being part of the EU trading block. As stated on the official website of the EU , ‘’coordinated policies reinforce the EU’s unique mix of market dynamism, social cohesion and environmental responsibility to deliver more growth and jobs’’. Launched at the Hanover Summit in June 1988, chaired by the President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors, the EMU has started off as an encouragement of practical and realistic way of achieving an even more united Europe with a single currency as one of its main targets. In the rather positive view of the European Union, the EMU is said to mutually reinforce the national policies of member countries resulting in ‘’more growth, more jobs and a higher level of social welfare for all’’ (Europa, 2008). However, several countries have chosen to opt out of the EMU, notably the United Kingdom of which is going to be the key note of this essay. It is important to look into the reasons for which the UK has decided to opt out of the EMU and evaluate the results...

Advance Fuel Corporation Case

...Advanced Fuels Corporations Financial Analysis and Forecasting Wai Wai Yung Wing Man Tsoi Introduction: Advanced Fuels Corporation (AFC) was founded five years ago by Dr. Zachary Aplin. In the fourth year of research he and his two –member staff made a major break-through that can convert grain waste products into ethanol which can mix with gasoline to produce a better burning automobile fuel. Producing ethanol from waste products would lower its cost dramatically so the market potential of the blended fuel would be increased. After AFC receiving a patent for Dr. Aplin’s unique ethanol production process he decided to broaden the scope of operations of the company but he doesn’t have additional funds to put in. So, he developed a business plan to seek for financing. AFC will need $55 million in total. Assume you are a commercial loan officer with a large regional bank: We would consider the type of business and financial statues of AFC, history of past banking involvement in deciding what types of financing to provide to a company as the bank definitely don’t want the loan to default. In the case of AFC, it is still in a very early stage of the formation of the business so we can’t really tell the revenue of it and it is impossible to be breakeven in a few years. We don’t have much banking history to refer to as AFC is just five years old. The company is still developing. The chance of it going bankruptcy would be relatively high. First of all, long-term loans...

Corporate Governance

...Chapter: 1 Introduction: The recent wave of business scandal and ethical lapses have heightened people, press, and investor security of companies, creating demand for a corporate culture of integrity driven performance and a new corporate transparency. Management and boards now feel compelled to ensure that proper governance processes are in place to protect corporate reputation, brand image and share holder value. According to Pricewaterhouse Cooper’s 8th Annual global CEO survey (Dec 2004), 50% of retail industry CEOs believe that there is a strong relationship among all elements of GRC (governance, risk and compliance) and that effective governance can be a value driver and a benefit versus a cost, to their companies. Effective corporate governance requires management and board involvement, accountability, embracing the processes, compliance, and structure required to direct and manage the affairs of a corporation. Its overall goal is to ensure the financial viability to the enterprise and enhance share holder value. For the retail and customer industry, globalization, which entails multinational operations, various financial reporting systems, and complex supply chain with wholesalers, distributors, and multiple types of retailers, not to mention multiple brand portfolios, and various types of outlets, provides significant rationales for management and boards to develop an effective GRC program. Successful corporate governance depends largely on trade-off among the various...
