...Historical Film Prompt: Miracle The film Miracle is about the U.S men’s ice hockey team winning the 1980 gold metal for the Winter Olympics, led by head coach Herb Brooks. Miracle was fairly accurate with its historic content during the course of the movie. The director Gavin O’Connor did a good job tying in historical and political background that brought the film together, which made it unique to other sport films. In the beginning of the film there was a sequence highlighting the historical events that lead up to the 1980 Winter Olympics. Miracle specifically opened up with the historical footage against the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Our country endured the time where it was divided because of the support of the Vietnam War. To make things worst, the 1970’s was also a hard time for the United States. The United States had to deal President Richard Nixon’s Watergate Scandal during the year of 1974. A scene in the movie showed a headline saying “5 were arrested in connection to GOP.” Later stating that President Richard Nixon had resigned from office, making him the first president to step down. And the following years lead up to another problem known as the hostage crisis in Iran during 1979 to the 80’s. The film also accurately portrayed the oil crises in the film multiple times. The oil crisis was mentioned early on in the film and in the middle when the coaches were at a gas station filling up their bus. ...Marxist Miracle on Ice In 1980 during the height of the Cold War between the United States and The Soviet Union Lake Placid hosted the 13th Olympic Winter Games. Moscow was chosen to host the Summer Olympic Games a few after months after Lake Placid. Leading up to both games there was a lot of tension between the two nations and both presidents were threatening to boycott their respective games and eventually both countries did end up boycotting the games (the USA boycotted the 1980 Moscow games and the Soviets boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles games). During the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid the American team was comprised of all collegiate athletes who were good hockey players but were still expected to be an underdog and make it out of the first round of games and not even contend for a medal. The Soviets, on the other hand, were considered to be the best team in the world and in a game leading up to the Olympics they beat the National Hockey League’s All Star Team in Madison Square Garden. During the Olympics the Soviet Union team beat everyone in their first round group and progressed on to the Medal Round as everyone expected they would. The American team tied Sweden in their first game of the Olympics and, much to everyone’s surprise, then proceeded to beat everyone else in their group and progressed on to the Medal Round as well. It has been immortalized by Al Michael’s phrase, “Do you believe in miracles? YES!” Still within the grip of the Cold War, a team of college kids took down the all-mighty Soviet Union. The Soviet team had won the last four Olympics and were widely considered the best hockey team to ever put on a pair of skates. In 1980, the scene set in Lake Placid, New York, the U.S. Olympic team became enshrined in hockey history as they beat the Soviets 4-3. The 1980 team seemed destined to repeat the less well known success of the 1960 team. Widely overlooked in the pages of hockey history stands the story of the 1960 United States hockey team and its gold medal now known as the “Forgotten Miracle.” Although twenty years separated the two teams, their stories are strangely similar. Both teams played the Soviet Union when political tensions polarized the two countries. Behind the bench of both teams were demanding coaches leading a bunch of amateur players from Boston and Minnesota.
