American history includes a multitude of international immigrants from countries all over the world including China, Mexico, and Britain. Many people migrate to America due to its vast amount of opportunities and to live out the “American dream.” This term depicts Americas freedom and independence that its people demand and worked hard to attain. America is also considered the “melting pot” because these immigrants make up the country and have helped redefine and cultivate the land. My ancestors once migrated to this land of opportunities in this very same pursuit of a successful, accepting lifestyle for their children. Love once was painted in America as between a man and a woman of the same heritage or skin tone. My great, great grandmother met an Irish man and they fell in love and had my great grandfather. My great grandfather then met an Indian woman and had my great grandfather who ended up marrying an Irish woman. Therefore, I come from a long, very mixed, line of immigrants who only wanted to conquer their pursuits and in turn found love. They all represent American history by being some of the first of their kind to marry outside of their race or heritage. Most mixed marriages were looked down upon by speculators and even close family members at these times because to maintain heritage and tradition was very important. My ancestors paved the way for many people to begin to see mixed relationships as a premise for the message that love is love. My family members are living proof that this message goes beyond just race and even applies to the sexual orientation. I am therefore a part of this history since I use these messages in my own personal life and see my parents and aunts in mixed, heterosexual, and homosexual relationships. These historical, radical changes can also be witnessed in American media because mixed relationships are broadcasted on televisions and billboards. College is the basis of what helps one achieve the American dream because it helps one to get a dignified, respectable career. Working in America and making money from this said career is considered successful in America. My ancestors moved to America so that their children may have better lives and be successful. My father and his sister are examples of what our ancestors wanted from us because he was one of the first in his family to go to college. Considering I am now in college, I am therefore carrying on what can now be considered a tradition. Traditions are a huge factor in history and many families use traditions to pass on their very own history and knowledge to their peers and family members. Influencing my future children or others to go to college as well will shape America’s history because more people will be encouraged to do well for themselves. It also adds to my ancestor’s dreams of them wanting their children to have better lives in America and makes their perilous journey worth all the pain and hard work. Going to college helps me to further my career and personal knowledge therefore I am living a better life just like they
