...Observation and Analysis: Ten Year Old Male In middle childhood, children continue to learn and build cognitive abilities as well as physical skills. During this stage, children go through growth spurts which include changes in height, weight, and increases strength and stamina. Many theorists developed many theoretical interpretations that will tie in the whole developmental status for middle childhood stage whether it is physical, biological, socio-emotional, or cognitive development. Sigmund Freud is one of the well-known theorist that identified the middle childhood as the “Latency stage” because the physical growth of a child at this stage is slow and at a steady pace. The subject of my middle childhood interview was Bryce, a ten-year-old Filipino-American boy who lives in a single family home with his parents, grandma, and two younger siblings (Personal). Bryce weighs about 107 pounds and a height of four feet and seven inches tall (Physical). According to his mother, Bryce is very active not only in school, but also active in the community. Every Sunday, Bryce participates in choir group at their local catholic church. He plays the guitar and ukulele during a church ceremony (Social). According to his father, he also engages in sports activities such as basketball every Saturday at a local YMCA gymnasium. His grandmother also mentioned that he displays cultural ethics as evidenced by his coming home from school, going to his grandmother, holding her hand, and placing...

...Marketing is a natural born human attribute that develop through the course of life, it is everywhere and all the time around us, especially nowadays we see its impact clearly with the infinite innovations in technology and media. Before taking the marketing course I knew that there is theory for marketing and creative multinational and local companies competing in a limitless profitable market. Now I am undertaking the theory linked to real word examples by our Doctor, and those examples made me start thinking about how important and powerful marketing is. I want to share my experience about basketball in Australia. Basketball sport in Australia and around the world is growing up as it is a sport that requires a lot of skills and training consisting of speed strength, endurance, athleticism and cleverness. So it is a big sport with an amazing Showtime with an increasing worldwide number of viewers and participants. It is an old sport in Australia, “1905 - First recorded game in Australia was played at YMCA facilities in Melbourne “Basketball Victoria website. Basketball Australia had amazing great good times from early eighties until mid nineties and since then it has been suffering. Who to blame for such loss, some say “that sport is a victim of its own success and had shifted away from the model that served it so well “Former Sydney Kings and Australian Boomer’s captain, Jason Smith. In my opinion the fault falls on basketball Australia and the professional participant teams...

...ask ourselves a question that has been around every since sports have started- are great athletes born or made? From my experiences, and other professional athlete’s experiences, I can tell you that they are made. I believe that you can achieve anything life if you want it bad enough, and are willing to do everything you can to achieve it. For instance, NBA great Reggie Miller of the Indiana Pacers is an un-athletic, skinny person who overcame leg deformities as a child that prevented him from walking. He had to wear leg braces for several years until his leg problems were corrected enough for him to start walking again. Eventually, Miller went on to play in the NBA for 13 seasons, while setting the record for most 3-point shots made (Beyond the Glory: Reggie Miller 2004). Therefore, in my opinion, Miller was not a “born” athlete. I feel that he worked hard to develop his skill, and make it into the NBA. On the other hand, many people believe that genetics make up good athletes. They believe that people are born with the ability to become a great athlete. For instance, people believe that Reggie Miller was born with genes that would make him a good basketball player since he was born with potential to grow tall. Miller is now 6’6, and almost every great basketball player surpasses the height of 6’4. Therefore, being tall gives you an advantage in basketball, because you are indeed, closer to the basket. Critics of the theory that athletes are developed will often ask “if Reggie...

...Peer Pressure in Adolescent Development Sondra Hotchkiss University of Guelph FRHD*2280 Adolescent Development March 28, 2014 For this reflection piece, I have chosen to reflect on the affects that peer pressure has on adolescents during development. I will briefly discuss what I have learned about peer pressure and why it tends to peak during mid-adolescence. Furthermore, I will discuss how peer pressure exists in a variety of teen television shows, including One Tree Hill. This example also demonstrates how other teens respond to peer pressure and how it is often connected with bullying. Finally, I will discuss how peer pressure can affect one’s ability to achieve both academically and socially in the school environment. According to the lecture notes (Glozman, lecture notes, FRHD*2280, January 9, 2014) adolescence is defined as a period of the life course between the time puberty begins and the time adult status is approached. During this stage, young people are in the process of preparing to take on the roles and responsibilities associated with adulthood in their culture. During adolescence, we have noticed that peers play a large role in a young person’s life and typically replace family as the center of a teen’s social and leisure activities. Often time’s adolescents have various peer relationships and interact with a wide range of peer groups. As adolescents begin to pull away from their parents in search for their own identity, their friends usually become a...

...American backgrounds integrating into the game of basketball, I wonder how these international translations are in turn changing the game we see at home. In Latin America, where the climate and geographies are so much different than the one in the United States, we find growth in basketball. Though the NBA in Latin America is growing, it is still not a hit in Central and South America. Though whenever you go either it is Latin America, China, America, etc… there is always someone playing the game. Even in the likes of Mexico, they are mostly known for militant based political revolution than anything else, but basketball courts do exist. The courts might be used for other things like farming during the day, but you will always see some kid playing and working on his game. Just like what I do when I am in my hometown hooping outside of my house, no court just the concrete and the hoop I have next to my garage. The growth of basketball throughout Latin America region is unexpected, only because they compete for national attention in their number one sport soccer. Basketball has to compete in Central American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba, and Brazil. Volleyball is also a sport that is highly accepted, but mostly in Brazil and Argentina. However, the basketball being played in soccer dominating countries is often influenced by soccer, but depends on the development of the country. “I know in Argentina [basketball] is very popular. Of course, not even close to...

...Activity Paper Columbia College: Life Span Psychology February 21, 2016 Activity Paper On January 30, 2016 we celebrated my Pastors’ 5th Anniversary/Birthday at a local park. While I help set-up things, this young man caught my attention. As I sat there observing the young adolescent male, I decided that he would use be the person I use to complete my observation on. This male is of African American decent and is approximately 15-16 years old. This young man caught my attention because he was so polite and helpful in assisting a few of our elderly members from their cars and/or church van. I watched him interact and played basketball with an older male that he resembled a great deal, so I am assuming that the older male is his father. The young man started to socialize with and eventually joined the youth from my church as they played a few games. This young man had obviously started puberty, the physical transition to adulthood. He had a shadow of facial hair, his voice was deep and his shoulders were wide and muscular. But his feet and arms still appeared slightly out of proportion which made me think he had not reached his expected adult height. This observation is what led to my guess in his age to be approximately 15-16 years old. I made an educated guess on the fact that his facial hair and wide shoulders indicate that he is in later stages of puberty but his out of proportion feet and arms led me to think he was younger than 17-18 which is the normal age...

... Practice makes perfect my father would say. Growing up in the country with limited access to entertainment my father put up a basketball globe and volleyball net in the backyard, I was an outstanding basketball and volleyball player from middle school to high school. I would also watch videos to learn how to dance. My family traveled a lot during the summer I visited many lakes and beaches I was always team captain on the teams I guess that is what lead me to my career in law enforcement and many other team lead positions I love being in charge. Growing up in the country I had nothing to do but play outside mostly with boys who would tell me you got to be tough to hang with us we do not want a cry baby hanging with us. My father was dying to have a child that was athletic it was almost as if I was his last chance none of my siblings seem to even be interested any sports. It all started in elementary school during summer leagues I would always look for the information for basketball summer leagues. My physical education teacher would always tell me you need to make sure you are playing sports every year, tell your parents to give me a call and I will even pick you up and take you myself even if they cannot. My desires to be outstanding in sports lead me to practice every day. My father encourages me he was my biggest support. Its 1980 now it is time to show my talent in middle school. Basketball and volleyball try outs and I am playing my heart out because it seems like...

...certain time periods with my parents. During these periods work was always set aside. My father and I frequently read the newspaper or other materials together, and my mother and I frequently played with my dolls and other feminine things. My father and I were very close to one another. The times we spent together were exceptionally important to me. One of the most special thing my father and I did together was the learning I did with him. He taught me to play sports, to enjoy nature, and to enjoy the art of discovery. I was enthralled by my mother’s role in my life as well because we did things that were typical of other females my age, but those things simply didn’t seem as fun or enjoyable as the things my father and I did when we spent time together. I thoroughly enjoyed playing softball, football, and basketball. I also enjoy hiking, camping, and swimming at the lake. There was nothing as important to me as being outside and doing traditional male activities because they came natural to me. Furthermore, my mother seemed to be trying too hard to capture my interest in things such as dolls, dress-up, and other female things that simply were a bore to me. I merely enjoyed my time with her because it was her way of trying to bond with me, but my real enjoyment came when I could be outside doing some activity. There was never a chance that I would be bored outside. I clearly remember as a child the first time my father taught me how to play basketball. At first we practiced without...

...Organized sports play a vital role in the development of a child’s life. The purpose of my essay is to explain why organized sports is essential to a child’s life and will teach them valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and discipline giving them a better chance to avoid pitfalls in life and groom them for success. Through my life experiences and statistics I will explain why organized sports not only develop a child’s life, but also are instrumental in so many other ways that the reward far outweighs the risk. There are many arguments that organized sports at an early age can injure a child, and makes many of parents nervous and uneasy. While the evidence supported in the statistics of Boston Children’s Hospital state that 20% of all children that participate in sports will receive some kind of sports injury, it states that 60% of these occur in practice and are only mild strains or sprains. The research also shows that children are more likely to hurt themselves in everyday activity, and these injuries are more serious than those that occur in organized sports. I can attest that all injuries I had in sports were minor, and the main injury that prevented me from continuing to play came as a result of falling on a slippery pavement, and not while engaging in sports. Organized sports have been proven to develop leadership in individuals. I feel that without sports I would not have developed into the leader I am in the corporate world. For example playing football...

...been so many years since I’ve attended preschool I chose to write this paper not on my experiences but on my observations of my son’s experience. As the parent of a preschool age child I enjoy watching all the milestones achieved by my children. In this paper I will respond on the developments during my sons two years in preschool. My son began preschool at the age of 3. His physical development made huge strides during preschool, especially his gross motor skills. Gross motor skills involve the large muscles used in locomotion.(pg. 195 Rathus, S. A. (2013). At the age of 3 he could barely ride a tricycle or bounce a basketball. By the age of 4 he learned to ride a bicycle with no training wheels and joined a basketball team which he excelled at. Compared to his classmates he was the only child who could ride a bicycle with no training wheels. According to the text some children are genetically predisposed to developing better coordination or more strength. Motivation and practice also are important. I can say a leading reason for this development came from the fact that when he was close to 4 years old my husband was laid off of work. They spent 3 days a week playing ball together and practicing riding his bike. Coupled with the fact that my my son has always been an athletic child his achievements came easier to him. According to Piaget the preoperational stage of cognitive development lasts from about age 2 to age 7. Operations are mental manipulations of information...

...society. It is an important sub-field of sociology that examines the many interpersonal and group phenomena that arises in relationship to sports. It covers all area in which sports affect and is affected by. The sociology of sports examines how culture and values influence sports as well as how sports influence culture and values. One could say that it has no boundaries. Sociology of sports also examines the relationships between sports and the media, politics, economic, religion, race and gender, as well as social inequality and social mobility ( Crossman, 2013). The sport I chose to research is basketball. Basketball is a game that continually amazes. Its fast pace and high flying aerial display has made basketball one of the most popular games in America. Basketball is a court game played by two teams of 5 players each. The object of this court game is to put a ball through a hoop or basket, and score more points than the other team. Invented in December of 1891 by James Naismith a Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician by the request of his superior Dr. Luther H. Guliet when he was an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association Training School ( now Springfield College) in Springfield Massachusetts. The first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had 9 players and the goals were wooden peach baskets...
