...I am in my fourth semester at Bunker Hill Community College in Business major. I have been in the U.S. since December 2015. Like any immigrant, I know I will face lots of challenges that I am determined to overcome through education. I took the Accuplacer Placement test in the summer 2016 and got into BHCC English 111 in fall 2016. In the beginning, it was tough for me as English 111 was my first class in college. For my first paper, I got a D, and I was thinking about dropping all the classes as English 111 was required for all of them. I was a rough day for me. I left BHCC that day without taking my second class. When I reached home, I told myself I am a fighter; I can't give up. I started to feed my mind with positive thinking and was...

...every class time could be your last class. A professor has the right to drop pretty much for any reason, in high school the teacher is stuck with you and they have to deal with it. But from these difference I realized that I was by no means ready for college and what it had in store for me this semester. We as students are expected to know this stuff before class has even started, but the teachers in the past they said they are making us ready for college that is there goal for us as their students, but they are just holding are hand and walking us through high school and across the stage for graduation....

...The information learned in English 111 will have a major impact in my life. This class was created to teach students how to write properly and understand different genres of writing and to emphasize the importance of writing. As numerous of us continue our educational paths, it will be critical to understand the fundamentals of writing, and I am positive this class will be a great stepping stone. Through the course’s heavy focus on annotation, writing, and analyzation, I hope to learn new information that can act as a stepping stone for my career path. My intentions for this class is to learn the valuable tools of writing and reading, not receiving an A. English 111 is a class focused heavily on writing, so I expect to learn different formats of writing such as essays and articles and how to write them properly. In order to achieve a full, detailed understanding of different writing techniques, it is essential for students to be exposed to a variety of texts. I expect the class to be assigned different forms of writings to achieve a better understanding of different types of texts. As we read our assigned passages, many of us will portray words and ideas that differ from each other. Because of our different backgrounds...

...Reflective Essay on What I Learned in English 111 I am a first-year college student at Delta community college, in Bay City Michigan. English 111 was my first English class since completing high school. When I received my syllabus for English 111 I was a little overwhelmed with all the writing assignments. I was not sure if I could express myself on paper. I had no idea what MLA, and APA format was. I could not remember the proper essay formatting stile, it has been years that I wrote an essay. When writing an email, you are quick, and short, straight to the point, how could I ever write a five-page typed paper. Work cited was also a very unfamiliar thing to me, but this was also explained during the MLA, and APA part of the...

...WRITER At the beginning of my English 111 class, I was unsure of my writing skills for college, thus English 111, which is a writing class, was intimidating to me. I had been out of school for over thirty years, and my memory of my writing in high school is not so clear. So at the beginning of the year, Dr. Kennedy asked us what we wanted to get of our class this semester. It was not hard for me to say I wanted to improve my writing skills. The skills I learned in English helped me improve my writing in other classes as well. Learning how to take notes with the double entry journal and Kia styles were a big help in my psychology and art history classes. Accordingly, the MEAL plan was a big help with getting...

...Enrollment English 112 is a pre-college composition course provided to the students at Brooke Point High School. Students must have completed Dual Enrollment English 111 to move on to this course. Similar to English 111, English 112 continues to develop college writing while putting emphasis on critical essays, argumentive styles, and research. The second semester of Dual Enrollment will have taught me how to accurately embed research into my papers by locating, evaluating, and documenting APA format, while effectively editing for style and usage. In this last semester of English 112, our class has written four different types of papers to improve our writing skills and show the importance of research. The first paper written in Dual Enrollment...

...In English 111 I have learned different things to perfect my writing skills. We specifically spent more time focusing on rhetorical knowledge and its different categories. These categories include what rhetoric is its self, what a rhetorical situation is, what the rhetorical triangle is, and what are the rhetorical appeals are. It all can be tricky to understand but I think I have a pretty clear understanding of what rhetorical knowledge is. Let me first explain what rhetoric is. Rhetoric is the ability in each particular case to see the available means of persuasion. We use this all the time is our everyday life; when we speak, write, or any type of communication to convince other we are using rhetoric. For example say you’re watching TV and Dove soap commercial comes on, there’s a woman in the commercial that uses a different brand of soap and she states that she is having problems...

...Not too long ago, I was asked to submit a personal writing assessment for an English class. That was my first time to really look back and think of how I feel about writing. Now, as I reflect once again on my writing history and experience, it made me realize just how I used to love writing creatively during my younger days. I was born and raised in the Philippines. I started school at the age of four so I guess I started scribbling the letters of the alphabet by that time. But officially, I was able to compose paragraphs by second or third grade. We were constantly asked to submit book reports and all sorts of paper—experiment papers, assignments, and compositions—in English (except for Filipino and Social Studies subjects), but...

...Latoya Gregory Instructor Woodard ENG-111 FGT04 01/07/2013 The Semester My Hand Almost Fell Off The most recent experience I had with writing was last semester, in my English 090 class. My teacher’s name was Josh Lane, but the class just called him Josh. I went into the course with the assumption that I would only have to compose simple paragraph papers while also learning the ropes of grammatical writing. I was sadly mistaken. Through the semester Josh gave the class five writing assignments. They ranged from three to five pages long. Out of all the writing assignments I received my favorite was a four page paper I had to write an allegory of myself. My least favorite was a five page paper the whole class had to write. About mid semester, when my hand only had a tingle, Josh lectured about Plato’s “A Allegory of the Cave.” Thus giving me my next challenging task he had in store. I had to compose an allegory of myself while explaining the concept of the Plato’s allegory. I had to dissect the symbolism in Plato’s allegory and prove how it coincided with my own allegory. What made this objective so interesting, yet so strenuous was the fact that my allegory had to be based upon a difficult time I have had in my life. My essay was littered with very detailed descriptors of my dreadful situation and Plato’s allegory. That is why this particular essay was my favorite. I8 was able to take a seemingly arduous task and break it down, in my own words, so that a reader would be able...

...Heather Pines English 111 Online 15 September 2015 Narrative Essay #1 What I want to say is I have a hard time understanding and remembering anything. It’s something that I have always struggled with, and have yet to figure out why my mind wanders. I find myself writing, even when I was younger and I would feel completely uninspired, yet I had so many ideas in my head. The voice I am adopting in this essay is a voice of encouragement, for anyone with this same problem, and myself, in hopes that I can one day be able to finish writing these stories that are in my head. When I was younger I dreamed of being a writer, not being rich or famous from it, but being able to write young adult novels that were at least mildly popular. I use to write the beginning of my stories, get part way into it, and be uninspired to write it, mainly because when I wrote what I wanted, I would forget about it. I want to write these stories, but I lack the discipline to actually do it. In a deeper desire, I wish to write about what is going on in my mind that never seems to stop. I’m always daydreaming about these characters in my mind, some of which I’ve had for twelve years or so. A fear of mine is it becoming a bit of a joke, my writing, because I also lack a big vocabulary to make my writing stand out a bit more. I have always felt that I have the mind of someone who would love English classes, and always felt that I would do better in English classes than any other class, but I still...

...Since I never been interested in reading I never really engaged with what I read about. It was not until last semester in my English 111 class that I started enjoying what I read by actually evaluating the text in further detail. Active reading means reading something in further detail by evaluating and analyzing the text in different ways then just re-reading the text. By doing this you establish more support in your assessment. This hands-on-way to read, by highlighting or writing in the margins, is a way to enhance the reader ability to expand their assessment of the text. Active reading also consists of reading, asking questions, and examining the text. This is different from any other reading technics I have used in the past. Active reading...

...Stephanie Simmons Stacey Bybee English 111 20 November 2011 Online vs. Traditional Classes I like going to school to further my education, the only problem is the inconvenience. With three kids, a job, and life going to school to sit in seat can be difficult. If you had to choose between online and traditional in seat classes, that decision should be based on what’s better for you. The option for me is taking an online class. By taking online classes, you can learn the same material, but in a different way. Trying to find time to make more money, spend time with the family, and take classes to better my life eliminates the need to sit in class to learn. I have been able to experience online and traditional classes. I believe these two learning systems compare with class variety, learning skills and class diversity. When taking a class in seat or online, your teacher are providing goals within the class that need to be accomplished within a time period. Books are a necessity in order to learn and develop skills. The students learn in seat when the teacher lectures on a subject and the student is tested on their knowledge. The students learn the same online when the teacher assigns readings on the subject and is tested as well. For the ease of working adults most schools offers the same class online and in seat. They both have diversity within the classrooms. The students are able to interact with classmates with a different background and aspects of life. Most people...
