...What is your favorite time of year? Why? My favorite time of the year is naturally the time when I have the most fun. To me, that time of the year falls during the December holidays, or rather, it starts during the last term of school. It may sound strange of me to include the period of examinations. But I like the way teachers leave us, students, by ourselves to do our own revision. There is hardly any homework to be done but there is a lot of studying to take up our time. Finally, when the examinations are over, we can all heave a joyful sigh of relief and look forward to the seemingly eternal holidays stretching out before us. Just before school breaks up for the holidays, there are a host of post-examination activities, among which is mass dancing in the school hall. This is something I enjoy very much as I get to dance to the newest pop music with all my friends. The opportunity to “break-free” from serious activities of school and to sing and dance there is a truly welcome event. The last day of school comes and goes and the holidays start. The first thing I do is to go to the library and borrow as many books as possible to fill my holidays. I simply love reading book after book without having to worry about putting aside time for schoolwork. I make it a habit to read books of a particular author each holiday. Within the second week of the holidays my birthday arrives, I enjoy helping my mother prepare my favorite food for my birthday. I do not have big birthday...

One thing that is common for everyone is that holidays are usually surrounded by family and friends. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving for lots of reasons. I look forward to Thanksgiving all year long. I can remember everything about thanksgiving from the great food and the great memories. I like to hear the laughter that comes from everybody having a good time. Thanksgiving is significant in my life because I get to see all of my family. ...frustration levels rise from attempting to untangle seemingly endless strands of Christmas lights. The color of dead pine needles cover the living room carpet, the scent of a freshly baked goodies and pine fills the air as you open your front door. These are all parts of Christmas that make it such a unique and memorable holiday. Family is something that Christmas would not be the same without. Christmas is exponentially fun for me because I get to see all of my family and have a great time with them as well. One of my favorite people to spend Christmas with was my Uncle Ed who unfortunately passed away just before Christmas in 2005. He always made my Christmas seasons extra special. Every year Uncle Ed would purchase an unknown amount of scratch off lottery tickets to give as gifts to me, my family and his friends. He always placed two of them in each envelope and handed them out to my dad, grandmother, aunt, great aunt, and step mom until he passed away. The best year by far for the lottery tickets was in 2004. It was the year that I won big! I had picked the best envelope ever, the Grand Daddy, as I like to call it. When I scratched off those tickets my eyes lit up and all I could do was jump up and down while screaming from the excitement! I had won a total of seven-hundred dollars! That Christmas had to be one of the greatest ever because the “high-rolling” tradition had finally paid out for me! Aside from getting us lottery tickets every year, Uncle Ed was just an...

...Classification Essay Photography is one of my favorite pastimes. I like to photograph family and friends, birthday parties and weddings. I also like to take pictures at holiday times especially. Before I take photos, I have to always make sure that I have all the necessary equipment, such as my camera, tri-pod, memory cards and extra batteries. I don’t want to miss any funny stuff or anything very memorable that may happen when my family gathers together. Taking a lot of pictures can drain your batteries quickly. I like taking pictures of my friends, people that I grew up with, old classmates. It’s good to look back at photos and see how much your looks have changed from when you were children. I like to take pictures of my classmates because as we grew older, our lives went in all kinds of different directions and some of them may have passed, but I look at it as always having a piece of them, something to remember them by. Birthday parties, I get some of the real keeper photos there. I like taking pictures of people when they are just being themselves. I love taking pictures at the baby’s first birthday party. You know the first thing that they all do, that is, take a plug out of there cake with their little fists and smash it into there faces. I also like to get pictures of them running, screaming and crying when they see the dreadful clown. I would say taking wedding photos is my favorite. I say that because, when my nephew got married, I was the photographer for beginning...

...Yusheng Chen #13 Professor Barber BC 230 October 21, 2015 My Favorite Holiday China is an old country which has five thousands years history, so there are lots of holidays in China. My favorite Chinese holiday is the Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in lunar calendar. Actually, Lantern Festival is not a real name in its Chinese meaning, because people can not translate that festival’s name correctly due to different culture and language. My favorite festival is the Lantern Festival because there is much fun in the Lantern Festival. In China, we call the Lantern Festival as “Yuan-Xiao Festival”. The reason why Chinese people made this name is that Chinese people have a special calendar called lunar calendar which is based on cycles of lunar phases, and it’s different from the Gregorian calendar which we use now. Thus, the Chinese character “Yuan month” means the first month in lunar calendar, and “Xiao” means the night. So this is what the festival’s name should really be. There are several versions story about the origin of the Lantern Festival, but no one knows which one is true. The most plausible origin states that the Lantern Festival is from Buddhism, and it began from Han dynasty. The emperor Ming of Han dynasty believed Buddhism, and he knew there was some tradition that Buddhists lighted lanterns to show their respect to Buddha’s relics in every fifteenth of lunar January. So the emperor Ming let...

A thirty-minute drive away is a place called the International Drive; this is where I stay during my time in Florida. Orlando's 14.5 mile long International Drive is a place I know only to well. Having been fortunate enough to stay on the International Drive several times I am aware of all of the great things it has to offer. ...Thanksgiving has always been my favorite adult holiday. While past Christmas’ have found me hidden away, well after midnight, building Barbie houses or installing batteries, this holiday is all about family and food. Preparing what has become known as the traditional American feast, on a weeknight no less, can be a daunting task. While some might rise to the occasion, others hold out hoping for an invitation that will require nothing more than to purchase a bottle of wine, known as the hostess gift. Embracing the art of organization now, will payoff later by allowing the hostess to also enjoy a relaxing day with family and friends. It has taken me several years to become comfortable with the process, but I now look forward to it, as if preparing...

...On November 3rd, Scapa’s middle and elementary dance majors went to see Dia De los Muertos which was performed by Bluegrass Youth Ballet at the Lexington Opera House. This performance was choreographed and created by Adalhi Aranda Corn. She decided that she wanted to share the history and her traditions of the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday through a dance. Throughout the performance there is a slide show playing in the background. The pictures shown in the background usually matched the theme of each dance. For example, while everyone joins together in the cemetery close to Estelita’s grave, in the background pictures of decorated skeleton heads with flowers around them are shown. This performance is different from most ballet performances....
