...Life at a Glance As I begin to write this paper, I find myself reminiscing about different events and situations I have not thought about in years, even some that I didn’t even know I remembered. It’s amazing how something as simple as writing a paper has me in such a reflective mood. There are things that I thought I would have done and goals I thought I would have accomplished by now, but I know that I would not be the person I am today if my life had been any different than it has been so far. In this paper I plan to present an overview of my life through different experiences and situations with reference to some of the readings from our Adult Development and Life Assessment course. In the beginning I can say that I had the traditional family: dad, mom, and three girls. My parents met in college at - he was a senior and my mom a freshman. He was the football star and she was the quiet girl from the country. At their first encounter he told her she would be the mother of his kids and she dismissed him. But he was persistent because my sisters and I are here. Although my dad is always telling us about how happy were as a family, I was seven when they divorced. I don’t remember all those happy times, and my sisters were younger than me -they were five & three- so they don’t remember them either. My earliest memories of that time are of him not being around because they were separated. Then he moved back to Florida when I was eight and we only saw him during the...

...ago, I was afraid of wanting anything. The struggles I came across as a high school freshman was unbelievable. I started off school with a horrible attitude because my parents sent me to a different school. They sent me to a school where i knew about two people one being a 42 year old man who just so happened to be the principal and also my uncle. Struggling every day to make friends with people who knew each other all their lives was tough. How could i be welcomed to a school where everyone had their group of friends with no room for a nobody like me? I was the girl who kept to herself because of the fear of being judged. I never got my hopes up wanting the ultimate high school experience that everyone throughout my life constantly bragged about having. I figured wanting would lead to trying and trying would lead to failure. But now I find I can’t stop wanting. High School has been a very interesting experience for me. It has definitely had its high and lows and many confusing experiences in between. Overall, i feel like i have been equipped for not only college, but also life as a whole. High School has taught me many things, both academically and emotionally. It has revealed and exposed my true colors, both good and bad and as a result, has built my aspects of my character. I gave up on being that outcast and just focused on being me. Now my only aspiration is to achieve my goals in life, one of those being attending college. College is such a big deal to me now. I never...

...By the end of my 8th grade year I hoped for myself to get into Early College Academy and to get a job in the teen summer job fair. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the job but I did get into my soon to be high school Early College Academy. I have overcome some of my challenges from the beginning of the year that I had hoped would be easy. I am excited that I will be going to a great high school to start me out on a path to my dream. In high school I hope to continue working on my goals that I have set. So far in middle school I have set my goals and successfully reached some of my goals. Some of the goals I had were to make new friends, read one book in every genre, keep a 3.0 or higher, be on the courage team/school council, donate to my school,...

...My career choice for as long as I can remember is to go into the social services. I volunteer in social services, and I have had 2 jobs requiring a bachelors without having an associates. I love being in the social services, empowering people to advocate for themselves is my forte`. I have run across many former clients, that expressed I am doing the community a dis-service by not working in the field. Then again when time permits I go to homeless meal sites and see what’s up, and if anyone could use some assistance accessing services. The goal I have always wanted for as long as I can remember is to pursue higher education. My associates is taking me 10 years, because life got in the way. In addition I was busy raising kids. As I have added more life experiences it became clear major goals should be geared towards getting into Social Services. I kept a goal list visible; as the years went on. To keep my dream close, and my goals in perspective, I volunteered at any agency in the field. I am interested in taking assessments and exploring my goals. In career workshops, and here in college I took the Jung Typology Assessment. The results came out ENFP (Extraversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving). This test is compatible with my career choice working in the social services. I get my energy, and become emotionally recharged by being with people. I value compassion, empathy, and understanding. In addition, Dr. Garner’s multiple intelligences assessment reinforced I am an interpersonal...

...Don’t Give Up I must say, I live a pretty sheltered life, with no wants or needs. I have a roof over my head, all the food I can eat, a loving family, and a good school. Yes, it sounds like I’m a spoiled child. Although I’d like to think I’m not, I’m slowly coming to the terms that maybe I AM spoiled. I don’t have any major life changes nor anything really special, and this prompt made me think about who was my role model, and/or the best advice I’ve gotten. I don’t have a sports or celebrity that I look up to, and the people that I actually know about are all scientists, so that didn’t really help. But when I thought about who had an impact on my life, I came to a realization. I didn’t need to try at math (at my old school, not CHS) and it was all due to one person, my mom. She’s a major role model to me, always making me push to my full potential. She made me practice math one grade ahead, which I hate. Originally, I thought that my mom was just doing it for no reason, but later when I grew older I realized that she was doing what was best for me. All this prep actually had a purpose later, which was the SAT for college....

...Time of my life. An opportunity seized. Pivotal. These are the words that come to mind when I reflect on my college experience. From 1978 to 1982, I was making decisions and memories that would last a lifetime. Some aspects of this time period I have wished I could repeat, but for the most part, I am who I am today because of how my college experience has shaped me. In this paper I will share about the factors that most impacted my development during my college years, specifically in the areas of psychosocial, cognitive, and spiritual growth. Then, I will link those stories to the student development in college theories we are discussing in this class. Finally, I will reflect on the positive and negative impact of my college years as it relates to my own development today. Significant Factors Impacting My Development in College Three things stand out when I think about the factors that impacted my development in college: first, my decisive goal of what I wanted to get from college; second, how personal insecurity can limit opportunities; and third, how I found God. My goal for college was to get a job…plain and simple. My mother always told me that I would find what I was looking for in college. What she meant was that if I went looking for trouble, I would find trouble. If I looked for fun, I would find fun. If I sat around doing nothing, I would find nothing. She was right. I set out to find fun and life experience in college, and I did. My goal when I started college was...

...everyone's life when they’ve had to find a new height of courage to overcome an obstacle, goal, or even a disaster. In reference to me, I had the courage to overcome a high standard goal that I set for myself. Being the youngest of 5 children and 9+ years younger than all of them, I was the only child left at home. Unable to participate in activities with them because they were much older, I focused more on my studies and didn't encounter much of a social life outside of school because my parents were so strict; well my dad for that matter. When I was able to engage in activities I had a set curfew and was limited to what I could do. My life had been well-grounded since I was born so it didn't come to much of a surprise; not being able to take part in certain activities. By my sophomore year in high school, I realized I was coming of age and should be able to do certain things. I couldn't endure the restrictions much longer so I decided to set a difficult but possible task. To graduate early and leave for college in three years instead of four. Outside of the well-grounded life and strict parents, I was over high school and it was partially what motivated me to take on the huge responsibility that could not only benefit me but show my hard work, determination, and dedication. On the other hand, my main motivation for going to college is that I believe that throughout my life, my parents didn’t have that high level of confidence when it came to my school work. I think I surprised them...

...My educational experience has significantly improved from when I was a small child. My education, started when I was in elementary school and recently started school in pre-k. From the beginning, it all started with elementary topics that ranged from numbers to letters. The easiest part of the learning process, were the numbers. After that came the alphabet, one of my favorite parts of school. It was entertaining because to learn the material you had to learn it by singing along a song and it would automatically be stored in your brain. After elementary, came middle school. Middle school was when my education approached a greater gap! It was a different transition from elementary school and expanded my knowledge towards greater horizons. The second biggest leap was the transition from middle school to high school. It was more complicated and often had more work to do than middle school. It also came with a greater responsibility and the effort I showed mattered towards helping me in real life, or the time that came earlier, college. The biggest transition so far in my educational...

...five kids,I definitely needed the money. Money was one reason for my decision to go back to school. When I was younger, I had dreams as well. I wanted to be something every other day. It went from being a super hero, being a fashion designer, and finally a lawyer. I wanted to be the first lady astronaut to walk on the moon, A firefighter .My dreams were endless. It seemed like the more I grew up, the more time was running out (well in my eyes it was). All of my hopes and dreams came down. I had kids. I thought "ah man, I'm young, I've got kids, I cant keep going to school, I have a family I have to support." So yes, I dropped out of school not caring for anything but my kids. Me just thinking that since I had kids, There’s no way I could have a steady life of my own. Soon I had gotten a job working at McDonald. With the simple mentality of my family being more important (forgetting that school was even an option). As time progressed and soon passed by, my children now reaching the questioning and curious ages of their lives, "mom, why didn’t you finish school and get your high school diploma?" was soon asked almost everyday. Me thinking oh well they'll understand, their old enough, "I was young and I had kids, I had to support my kids," just wasn't enough for them. They were beginning to think that dropping out of school was an option, when it will never in a million years be an option for them. From that point on, I just knew I had to do something. So one night I just sat...

...History When starting off college I knew exactly what my major would be, Special Education. My mom was a teacher and my boyfriend’s mom at the time was a teacher as well. I just knew moving in that direction I would have a support system. So I started my journey at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Wittenberg had captured my heart and I was ready to learn. After completing my first year at Wittenberg I decided to move back home to be closer to my family but also was having complications with depression. That time was really hard for me because I felt as if I was giving up on my dreams. But I took a vow to myself that I would not slack when it came to going to school in Saint Louis, Missouri. I enrolled into general education courses at a community college. While being at home I had time to think about where I would like to go that was closer to home that would give me the same five star education that Wittenberg University offered their students. So I sat out on a hunt to find the most amazing school. When looking up schools I started in Missouri because I knew that I wanted to at least be close to home. Missouri State was one of the first schools that popped up when scrolling through Missouri Schools. That week I came to campus to visit a few friends who had come here right after high school. After that week with my friends I as sold that Missouri State was the place for me. As I started classes at MSU I was still pursuing a major in Special Education. I was still...

...have aim and goals in life. These years are very important in molding a person’s career and future. My life took a major turning point during these years from 1997 to 2007. These years drastically changed my life, for what I am today that I thought before during my teenage years. Remembering those years gives me a sense of joy and happiness and a sense of satisfaction in completing and achieving few steps in life considered to be important. From 1997 to 2000 were my days in college. At first I felt very difficult to adjust to the surrounding, but when I started making friends the life was much better and stress free. Those days were most exciting days as I was independent and my thoughts were developed to mould my life and career. I was seeing great things for future and planning my life for good. In college days I learnt a lot about the nature and philosophy of different people. Basic lessons of life were learnt in my college days. I knew this world can be good place to live and can also be a destructive and bad place to live too. But what matters is the way you live the life and what principles you stand for. These were many occasions where I needed to make important decisions in my life. Some come out to be beneficial but some decisions were not at all correct. Mistakes made in life teach you to step forward to achieve and perform better the next time. “Failures are stepping stone to success”. This saying really strengthened me during my college years when I failed to make...

...The decision to enroll in college can be a difficult choice. Many people follow a standard time frame going from High School directly to college and utilize more idealistic means in choosing where they will go to college. Idealistic means such as where their parents went, what the campus is like or whether its academics cater to a specific lifestyle or career choice. Others, like me, must base their decision on where they attend based on more realistic means. So what makes Western Governors a more realistic choice for people like me? In order to give you a better idea of why I decided on WGU as my choice for higher education let me begin with what brought me to decide that college was important for me at all. I had barely finished High School, had moved out from my parents and lived from place to place at an early age. I had no idea what my ambitions were or what I wanted to do with my life. Instead of deciding what I wanted to do with my life I just went from day to day until life seemed to decide for me. I worked my way up through food service jobs gaining experience and credentials over the years. I even got to a point of comfort or perhaps it was better defined as a point of complacence. I had started a family and had a job that afforded the bills and the occasional luxury. What my education and current career did not afford was security and self fulfillment. Not only was I not happy working food service anymore but I was suddenly laid off and unemployed...

...hear the word College, college, and college. The main drive and goal of many students including myself at this age is getting into a top-notch college virtually guaranteeing future success. However for me, college is a whole new ball game and is not only important for future success, but a broader and bigger bubble. My background actually plays a huge role on why college is important to attend. I come from an immigrant family who has worked day and night to earn money. My mother is both educated and have associate’s degree from India. My dad is educated, but has not gone college. I will be the first one to go to college in America, the country of opportunity. My family’s dearth of education yields that my family background plays an important role in the reason for me to attend college. Attending college is important for me because my parents lacked a phenomenal education, which comes down for me to carry my family pride and attend a rigorous college....
