There would be nothing more exciting than getting the opportunity to be a part of that. When I had to choose a destination abroad to do my semester, it was clear it would be China. I made this decision for a number of different reasons. I had heard many good things about China and became fascinated by its tradition, culture and people. China sparked my interest since I wanted to choose a location furthest from home, and one that is completely different than where I come from. The difficulty of learning to adapt and immerse myself into the Chinese culture is a challenge I would like to face. This really puts me to the test as I realized that my theoretical knowledge was no match compared to my practical knowledge. I kept being surprised, again and again, as I noticed how much I was capable of. I wanted to give it a shot. Thus, I had the idea that I could move to Shanghai for 3 months. 1 Cultural Differences ...

...Imagine going to an interview for your dream job. You have spent years trying to become qualified for this job and now you are finally at the doorstep of your lifetime goal. The interviewer comes back in and you’re expecting to hear good news. Then suddenly he tell you that they have found someone else more qualified for the job. You are utterly perplex as to who could’ve been better for the job than you. Then, as time goes on, you find out that it was a young white man who has less experience than you. As a matter of fact, the only thing he had over you was the color of his skin. This was a made up story but, to many people in this country, it is a real horror. This is only one of the many examples of instances where people are withheld a standing in jobs due to their racial background. Racial discrimination in the workplace is a real issue and it must end. Allow me to show you various different events in which racial discrimination took part and ruined lives. Allow me to tell you of a young African American man who used to work in a factory. The man’s name was Wayne A. Elliott and he worked in a factory that made military air plane parts. While he was working there he would constantly be harassed by his white co-workers. They would do things like call him racial slurs, send him “back-to-Africa” tickets, and even go as far as to draw hangman’s noose in his office, as seen on paragraph three in “Racism in the workplace, by Aaron Bernstein (Aaron Bernstein). These are all things...

...To Be a Human- Then and Now Throughout the span of time humankind has asked the question: What does it mean to be human? Some of the world’s greatest men have contemplated over this question and there are a vast number of theories on what makes a human. A scientist might take a more literal opinion of the question, thinking that we are human because we are higher on the evolutionary chain; we are physically, emotionally and mentally complex. While others might take a more philosophical position on the matter, like René Descartes who originally spoke the famous phrase: “I think, therefore I am”. A philosopher would value the fact that humans can intelligently communicate their thoughts, and these thoughts can change the very existence of man as a whole through invention and innovation. Religious groups would base their opinion of humans on their faith; we are human simply because we are not God. At times science, philosophy and religion can confuse a person opinion on what it actually means to be human. Maybe the concept of being human is much simpler then some may think. Being human could simply mean that we as a collective race are imperfect. The idea of human imperfection is not easily explained by science, philosophy or religion. They can all sometimes be too complex to understand. Science exemplifies the human race as a species, philosophy praises human race as thinkers and religion looks at the human race as sinners and how we all must be perfect to please God...

...Rodolfo Baggio Marianna Sigala Alessandro Inversini Juho Pesonen Editors Information and Communication Technologies in Tourism 2014 eProceedings of the ENTER 2014 PhD Workshop in Dublin, Ireland. January 21, 2014 Preface The advent of Information and communication technology (ICT) has had a paramount impact on tourism. The effects of this revolution continue to change the nature of contemporary tourism on a day-to-day base. The globalization of information, open innovation, better access, collaboration in a generation of information and technological convergence, have all contributed to the design of a new scientific paradigm. Thanks to our passion for research and to the continuous advancements in the technological ecosystem as well as the possibility of better understanding human activity and behavior we are on the threshold of a new era of the social science of tourism. This new social and technological paradigm affects tourism and human mobility in a way that gives the research process unheard-of possibilities. The current level of technological development allows for the construction of objects that are smaller, more intelligent and embedded in the environment and even wearable. These objects, which record and learn our habits are connected to the Internet and they have computing capabilities. They can also be interconnected and generate large quantities of information to benefit the environment in which they are located as well as the travellers that possess...
