...My Home Each year millions of dollars are spent on therapy because people want to re-live their childhood. These people discover late in life that childhood was the time period where the most meaningful parts of life were. Things from our past don't just fade away, they are part of us, and most people greatly miss them weather they know it or not. My most meaningful place is my parents' house because it is a symbol of reliving my childhood, indulging in good times, and just plain feeling at home. Childhood is the time in life where personality traits are formed and memories haven't yet taken a sentimental feeling. Now that those times are gone, I remember running through the neighborhood with my friends and many other happy times where I knew I was having fun. The time my brother and I were playing hockey in my living room was fun. It was a friendly game, and we even had the cushions form the couch set up so nothing would get broken. Little did we know one stray puck would have us replacing drywall at 11:30 PM so our parents wouldn't see it, but, like everything else, we did it because it was enjoyment. My theory on life is, in order for something to be meaningful, you have to want it. I don't always want the irresponsible times of discovery that were my childhood back, but I do strive for the feelings I had toward life when I was there. Having a pleasant attitude all the time may not be possible this day in age, but I know it's a good feeling when you can...

...My Teaching Philosophy Having spent many years as an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learner, a lot of what I do in the classroom as an ESL/EFL teacher has some sort of connection to my own experience as a language learner. One of the most valuable lessons I was able to take away from this experience is the importance of making language teaching/learning as authentic as possible. In my opinion, the target language should be used as a means of communication in the classroom and not just as a subject of academic interest. This way, language instruction is meaningful and effective. After all, most people who decide to learn a language do so in order to be able to communicate in the target language. Regarding meaningful interactions, I am a firm believer that for language learning to take place, learners need to be exposed to the target language in a meaningful way. I think that a way to make language instruction meaningful is by taking into consideration students' individual differences. By having a clear idea of who my students are, I am capable of making informed pedagogical decisions, such as establishing appropriate learning goals and objectives, and selecting suitable content, teaching approaches and materials. Further, when it comes to making language instruction more authentic, I believe that integrating skills is crucial. Given that most real-world communicative situations require people to combine the use of skills, it seems logical to me to want to replicate...

...A Beautiful Place I think we all have a beautiful place in our mind. I have a wonderful place that made me happy a lot of times, many years ago. But sometimes I think that I am the only person who likes this place and I'm asking myself if this place will be as beautiful as I thought when I will go back to visit it again. Perhaps I made it beautiful in my mind. This place is meaningful to me because it is part of the county I loved, is part of the county where I grew up and is part of my childhood. This place is in the country in an old region named Appalachia, a small piece of the Appalachian Mountains, in a town named Pikeville. Pikeville is a polluted town because of the coal industry. People live in apartment or condominium buildings because of its little space available. I grew up in one of the many buildings in Pikeville admiring from my bedroom window the beauty of the mountains, always exploring with my eyes the forest or the meadows, looking for a clean and quiet place. And, I found one on a hill in the back of the town. It is about 100 feet square, it has seven old trees, wild flowers and a lot of bugs and ants during summer time. I used to go there to sit down on a rock and watch the town and my trees. There was a very old tree, a maple tree, with a huge trunk. The others were smaller, three in the back, three on my left side and the old maple tree on my right. There were flowers, many kinds, white, yellow, purple and blue. It...

...It was the summer before my eighth grade year, and the last place I wanted to be was at my church’s vacation bible school. I was scheduled to make confirmation in the coming fall. One of the requirements was to volunteer, and I asked myself: “Why do I have to volunteer? How is this going to help me with confirmation? Isn’t this just a waste of time?” But, I did it because I had too. So, I spent a week of that summer acting as a crew leader for a group of kindergarten students at the summer program. Guess what? It was one of the best weeks of my summer and truly impacted my future direction. I never expected volunteer work could be so meaningful. I knew I wanted to continue on helping others. The next summer I returned and volunteered...

...Synthesis *Disclaimer: the views represented in the synthesis essay may not necessarily represent my personal opinions (I won’t write this disclaimer on the AP test). To live a meaningful life is awfully vague, for it can mean a life of happiness, of financial superiority, and of success. But the reason behind why the definition remains vague is clear: we become too obsessed with external factors and often forget ourselves--our character and our individuality. Thus, the prospect of a meaningful life continues to run away from us as we grow jealous of others who have more resources than we. To live a truly meaningful life that embraces both controllable and uncontrollable factors, we must resist trying to please others by avoiding the tendency...

...forgiveness on my list for Morrie. I think death, and aging are things that I would have a hard time with because nobody likes to think about death, but getting older is also something most people try to avoid. I want to know what it’s like to know you are going to die soon. I also want to how to accept, and face aging because it seems like it is something we all fear. That brings up my next question for him, why do we fear aging? Marriage and family is the next area I would ask Morrie about. Morrie always talks about how important marriage is, but I want to know why he feels so strongly about this, and maybe some advice on how to have a long, happy marriage like his. Our society has drastically changed from Morrie’s generation where family was everything. Now it seems like family gets pushed to the side due to all of our busy lives. I would want Morrie to give his thoughts on why our society has moved in this direction, and how we let this happen. My final topics for Morrie are society, and forgiveness. Morrie doesn’t buy into our society, and I think it would be good to learn why because it seems like everyone else does. Why do we give in to society would be another question on my list. Morrie seems to be very forgiving, and what I want from Morrie is to learn him art of forgiving, but most importantly how to not hold grudges. Overall my list is just a shortened up version of Mitch’s. Fear, and how to have a meaningful life are the only things I would keep off of my list even though...

...I have learned a lot in my first year of college, academically and socially. More importantly though, I learned a lot about myself. To be more specific, I learned what values are important to me. In my first year of college I lacked, personal and intimate relationships and learning environments, a space to practice and grow into my religion, and the exposure to a student population with diversity. It was in recognizing that I was missing these things that I realized Loyola University would be a great fit for a student such as myself. Personal and meaningful relationships are very important to me. I grew up in a very close family of eight children, raised by parents who stressed the importance of having a tight familial bond. I graduated from a high school of only 36 girls, where I learned not only the benefits and importance of a small group of trusted friends and companions but the academic advantages as well. But my college experience thus far has not supplied me with the personal and meaningful relationships I so eagerly wish to have. I want to go to a school that values a small environment for it’s educational, developmental, and social benefits. A school that pushes its students to engage with each other in meaningful and powerful ways in and out of the class room. I believe that attending Loyola may supply me with this opportunity....

...Business Communication plays a very important role in my daily life and in business. Business communication can be defined as promoting or representing a service or product relaying information within a business or in my case a household/family. There are three communication trends that can be used on a daily basis at work deal with personal contact, establishing clarity and giving meaningful feedback. At the present time I am a stay at home mom and student and business communication can be associated with a number of things such as I have to keep my household running and peacefully. An example of such would be that I am on the phone making sure that bills get paid or I am on the internet or emailing for school both are promoting my education and representing my happy home. It is believed that if there is no communication there will be issues within a home or a business. Also I have to make reports of all activities in the household and what bills were paid monthly. If business communication does not take place then my home will be in total chaos as well as any business that uses business communication. In day to day business managers have to communicate with employees and their superiors about goals and targets. Business communications consist of but limited to telephone conferencing, email, web based, video conferencing, power point presentations. Business communications very much help me to manage everything I need to in my day to day life for example I make a list or a plan...

Though sifting through schools was indeed overwhelming, I was pleased to find some places that really felt like an environment I would thrive in. From location, to courses offered and the teachers instructing them, there were a few schools that really felt like solid options. Of those options, University of San Diego (UCSD) seemed to be the best fit for me. When comparing possible schools I evaluated courses, transfer admissions, cost, professor interests and research. The University of Santa Cruz is definitely a top choice too as it has an in-depth marine biology program, taught by professors with great credentials and intriguing research...

...mean to you? How do you think studying in (PLACES), or one of (COLLEGE)'s global sites would change you as a person and equip you to build cross-cultural relationships at (COLLEGE) and beyond. I was born in South HOMETOWN, not a particularly dominant or influential nation in the world. Unlike its petulant cousin to the north, South HOMETOWN has not garnered much attention from the world. It does not possess plentiful resources, finances or land mass. On a personal level I was once much like my country—insignificant and unnoticeable. I didn't play sports or embark on any adventures or challenges. I lived a boring life. If I were a flavor, I'd be vanilla. At the age __, things changed. A strong desire birthed within me to do something meaningful with my life. Dreams of attending university and plotting a career path dominated my thoughts. Looking around at my situation, I quickly realized that HOMETOWN was not the suitable place to achieve that dream. I was a frog in a well. I began to search for what I felt would be the ideal setting to study and to fulfill my goals. My quest soon culminated with (College). Here was an institution that had all the elements I was looking for as an international student preparing to make a global impact. ...translation, swimming hard and fast, without an awareness of the orientation and destination. Nevertheless, after four times of Baptism in this course, now I feel refreshed and able to stand in a higher place, to get a bird view of the sea, being oriented and determined. Yes, that is what this course means to me—new ideas, new perspectives of view about translation and a much broader horizontal. To be more specific, I list below three points of significance or gifts that this course bestows me with. 1. Being meaningful is the meaning of our life. Long ago, I set my mind to become a translator so as to introduce more Chinese traditional culture to western world. I feel obligated and cheerful for this dream because I always hold the faith that my dream or goal should not be totally personal. I mean it should be constructive to the society and helpful to other people. It must be meaningful. However, from time to time, I was distracted by my petty desires and fears— those worldly concerns, trapping myself into a dilemma, sometimes being self-interested and money-oriented and sometimes struggling to uphold what I have been pursuing. But after the exposure to your philosophy of translation and your obligations and faith, I became determined again. Our life and dream must be meaningful. We must make a difference in the lifetime. If we just translate something for the sake of translation, just for the market, just for earning money and even for cheating others, we may find it painful...

...“Only your LSAT score determines what law school you get into,” the former pre-law advisor told me, implying that one four-hour test down the road would determine my law school prospects — and in turn, my income — for years to come. At the same time, throughout our college experiences, many of us have a similar mindset of taking classes that offer “easy As” — giving the best grades for the least amount of work. And likewise, when many of us were in high school and aspired to join the Honors program, getting a 1400 was at the top of our bucket lists to secure a coveted scholarship. But despite the hype, the mathematical metrics of an exam score or GPA offer little correlation or relevance to the workplace. No lawyer was asked to solve LSAT...

...why is it meaningful to you? Kids now days might deem a place without internet, games consoles and cable as a nightmare, hell, a place of agony, I deem it as a place of serenity, comfort and wholeness. I call that place Las Cruses, New Mexico. Immediately after crossing into New Mexico County I feel welcomed, as if it’s been waiting for me to come back since I left. There is a New Mexico welcome center awaiting me just two miles away from entering the county, outside the actual building there is a sculpture of a road runner standing 35 ft. tall made of shoes. All kinds of shoes sneakers, heels, flats all kinds of sizes, yes it stinks a bit but it holds a small part of a lot of New Mexico residents including me, if you look closely you’ll see a little white shoe that belonged to a little bubbly Alma. If it wasn’t the welcoming essence of the city it was the hundreds of types of cacti that inundated the rural part of town that awed me or maybe it was the miles of pecan trees that surrounded the suburban part of town I felt as if I was one with nature, as if I couldn’t get closer. Every adobe style house had its own personality they were all classic colorful and sheik and not one failed to have an Aztec sun outside of it. Even when the sun went down I had something to look forward to, I could spend the whole night looking up at the clear, clean sky that accommodated billions of stars I felt as I was able to climb onto a ladder and grab a star. I spent most of my time outside...

...Q 16) What do you think of the view that the most meaningful relationships in Birdsong are those between men? One may argue that the view that the most meaningful relationships in Birdsong are those between men is true to some extent. In the novel Faulks presents a number of meaningful relationships between men that are key to helping the characters maintain a purpose throughout the war within the novel. Stephen forms a relationship with Weir that wouldn’t have been of the same nature had they not been involved in a combat situation, but the element of war helps them to understand one another, creating a meaningful relationship between the men. Stephen and Weir place an element of trust in one another ‘I want you to do the runes, tell me my fortune.’ Weir relies on Stephen in this instance to convince him that he will survive and make it through the war. Evidently Stephen fixes the cards but without the use of the fortune telling Weir would surely lack confidence and almost certainly expect death. The strength of the relationship, however, is such that both characters can rely on each other through the hardships of war. The relationship between Jack Firebrace and Stephen underground also supports the view that the most meaningful relationships in Birdsong are those between men. Jack’s character is first introduced ‘lying forty five feet underground’. This presents an ominous, dangerous mood. Faulks also implements a sense of foreshadowing here as Jack’s introduction reflects...
