...life's journey Leo Mack University of Maryland University College UCSP 615 Poverty is a temporary stop on life's journey I believe, that poverty is temporary stop on life’s perilous journey and not your final destination. Many of us were dealt a bad hand, the day we were born in poverty. This, I believe was not punishment for sins committed by my forefathers, but instead was the harsh reality of my world at birth. I was born in a little village in the Caribbean island of Jamaica, and was raised by my mother with six siblings. Life as I remember it was very difficult for her as a single parent to provide for us, but she never gave up and did whatever she had to do to see us through. The harshness of life was not apparent to me because our situation was not unique, many of my friends and neighbors were in similar position. My perspective on life changed when I entered high school and realized that my norms were totally different from a lot of other children. I had two pairs of uniforms that I wore interchangeably each week, for some of us that was normal for others that was repulsive. Buying lunch was never a luxury I could afford, so I brought whatever was available from home, others would buy their lunches from the school cafeteria and off campus. I often ask myself why was I born in such poverty, and the only conclusion I could come to, was the lack of money and education in my family. My mother was a factory worker and my father, who was absent for most of my life was...

...Spiritual Discernment in Counseling In my life I have been faced with many unique and wonderful situations. Each of these events have shaped me into the person I am today, and consequently have influenced my career path as well. In this paper, I will explore my personal position, my past and present influences, and the practical application of all of this in order to identify my calling. I assert that, more importantly, the struggles and challenges I have encountered have made an even bigger impact on the person I have become and allowed me the clarity to focus in on my life’s purpose. Personal Position When considering the major approaches in Spiritual Discernment, I find myself drawn to two. I strongly believe that we are all on a journey and that we are unable to stray far from our destined path. This is the essence of the Bulls-Eye Approach. God is in control. He has a plan for our lives. We have the power to make choices that can lead us astray, but only so far. God will always guide us back to the path we are meant to walk. However, I also find myself considering the Wisdom Approach when looking at my life’s path. I do not believe that God’s gentle guidance always comes in the form of signs. I believe that the Holy Spirit guides us through His wisdom, and that if we are self-aware, we will know what is right. God will guide us through the influence of our strengths, talents, and abilities. He also provides us with the influential counsel that have our best interest...

...“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” ― Ernest Hemingway. The journey that has lead me to where I am, and who I am today is significant. Although, the journey that will take place in the next four years will be just as important. Who I am has been shaped by the culture I’ve been brought up in, my goals have been shaped by the people that surround me, and how I will benefit from Florida State University’s community stems from my desire to be independent and involved with the people and events there. I was born and raised most of my life in Saudi Arabia. It’s a different life there. I went to a private school whose name translates to “Islamic Education Schools” and came from a strict Islamic family. I was taught to be the best Muslim I can be; to memorize the Quran, pray more than five times a day, to fast (abstain from food from sunrise to sunset) when preferred, and so...

...Friendships are a big part of careers, through the whole story Edgar Prado tells his friendship between him and his horse Barbaro. My Guy Barbaro, by Edgar Prado, was about a young, aspiring race horse named Barbaro. From the start of his first race, America knew he was something special. Then their careers took a turn both of them wouldn’t want. During one of their races Barbaro severely injures his back right leg. Survival is a lens that goes with this book because both of their careers have their thicks and thins, their ups and downs but it all can come with greatness attached with it. The jockey / author, Edgar Prado develops the theme that greatness can come easy, but greatness can come hard as well, by using setting, symbolism, and conflict. To begin Edgar Prado uses setting to develop the theme of the story. Setting is where and when the story takes place. For example on page 11 Edgar says, “They had gotten into a spat over a horse Michael trained named Kicken Kris. I won a race on him at Belmont in June 2004, convincing Michael to run him in the Arlington Million, a big summertime race in Chicago.” This quote supports the thesis because his agent and trainer got into a feud with each other. So Edgar has to figure out a way to settle this feud between his trainer and...

...My Career in Nursing and What Lead Me Here Lacey R. Doland Excelsior College Abstract Starting a journey as a developing professional is a long, hard road. Especially in the medical field. I have learned that every nurse no matter the credential behind their name has a story on how they got to where they are today. I have a story of my own and I will continue my story until the very end of my career. I have many areas of nursing that I want to cover during my career so my story will more than likely become a novel. My Career in Nursing and What Lead Me Here There are many motivations that pushed me to choose to pursue a degree in the world of nursing, and deciding to continue my education at Excelsior College. However, only a few experiences from my early adulthood helped me to open my eyes to a brighter future. A Few Things about Me During the early years of my life I was never really a happy person. I was mad at the world and pretty much hated everyone. I think most teenagers are the same way but my life circumstances made me think in a much more negative aspect. I had not one bit of motivation to be anything let alone pursue a career. I made the decision to quit school at an early age and I didn’t really think that I could do anything with myself. I also had no one to tell me or show me any different way. I also did not come from a really great family background. No one in my immediate family was any type of professional and most had dead end jobs. My Life before...

...Women and Journeys As John Gartner once said, there are only two plots in all of literature, either the main character goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town. Women have however never been the one going on a journey or a stranger that comes to town. Though women have longed to explore the world, they have always been denied participation in public life. “Women and Journeys” by Mary Morris discusses this problem. Mary Morris describes the differences in acceptability and possibility of travelling for the different genders. Historically it has always been the men who went out explore the world, while women stayed at home. This division continued up through time. Women were limited in order to keep them at home. In the western world women were to wear corsets. Significantly the bindings in the corsets were called “stays”. The corsets kept women from going far and from going fast, since corsets are very tightly bound together. In the eastern world women’s feet were broken repeatedly, in order to bend the toes under the bottom of the feet. This made it completely impossible for women to walk, since it was extremely hurtful. Eventually the women’s feet were caught with gangrene, which caused death. So not only were women psychologically restricted from going anywhere, there were literally restricted physically as well As a cause of the conditions women only got to experience the part where a stranger comes to town. As the feminist Elaine Showalter said it: ”Emotions rushed...

I was as expected constantly struggling with the daunting task of providing clothes, food, transportation and a roof over my head. As the years went by I was further...

...“What is your opinion about it?” mother asked for my answers after elaborating an accounting phenomenon. In the beginning, I would seek for suitable answers quickly, but in many instances, I cannot provide satisfactory answers in that it was beyond my comprehension at that time. Then, my mother, a senior auditor, expounded it clearly with in-depth accounting expertise. It can be said without exaggeration that mother is my idol. Through case-based learning, I got a general understanding of accounting and came to apprehend accounting plays indispensable and significant roles in corporations’ development. Offering actual accounting statements with effective verification systems could cut down corporations’ expenditures and prevent deceptive accounting behaviors in accounting market. Under such osmosis, I gradually cultivated basic perceptions of accounting and triggered me to dig more in accounting.
