...difficult concept to grapple with at any age – yet my mother contracted cancer when I was 10, forcing me to confront this much younger than I would have wished. I will never forget my powerlessness in knowing that rather than a cure, we could only trust in an inexact process of destroying swathes of cells in the hope of killing all cancerous ones as well. Thankfully, she recovered, and with this good news I never wanted to feel so powerless again, striving for empowerment through understanding more about her recovery and the mechanisms behind the drugs and treatments that saved her life. As I delved more into it, I realised that cancer 'ran in the family', with former patients including my grandparents, mother, aunts and uncles, as if something was being passed down. My suspicions proved true as I stumbled upon heredity and genetics, amazed by genes, DNA and that people were akin to computers in how they can be coded in just 4 letters: ATCG . Although cancer cannot be caused by one gene or inheritance alone, people with inherited faulty genes have higher chances of developing cancer and I realized it was simply in my family’s ‘code’. This kindled an interest in science, especially in biology and chemistry, that has since developed into a passion of mine , which is why I want to pursue biochemistry formally at university....

...combination of passion, hard work, dedication and success. Obtaining the stature to be viewed as literate in an area is a process, there are no short cuts to get you to that level, and no substitutions for the work you have to put in. An area I believe that I am literate in is soccer. In my 18 years alive, I have put in countless hours, shed tears of both anguish and joy, persevered through the toughest times, and have been recognized for my achievements. In the process to obtaining literacy, passion is the driving force that ignites a reason to become literate in an area. Without a purpose, there is no reason to obtain any goal, let alone to become proficient and literate. Hard work and dedication are the forces that...

...is willing to have my help. The passion I have for helping persons started when I was at a young age. In fact, as far as I remember I always felt responsible for helping people that were around me. When I was a child I was responsible for my younger brother and my older brother in a way. As I grew up I started to think over my life on how I could attempt to find some purpose in my life. Now I understand that it was the formation of my identity to help other people to dominate in the development of my personality. I should say that I really started with the passion of helping others when I was able to help out at my church after I gotten out of school where there was an after school program called C.H.A.M.P.S. I tutored the children who was a part of the after school program. My responsibility to help the children made me have this uplifting feeling because I perfectly understood that I have some knowledge that I can share with other them. At the same time, I know that many children do not have an opportunity to get a good education but they are gifted so helping out at C.H.A.M.P.S. gave them a better opportunity. Consequently, I could help them. This is actually why I started tutoring them and this became my passion. At the same time, this passion brought me great satisfaction because I felt that my help is really useful and that those children really need me. It was a really great experience because it brings in new emotions in my life and made my life really purposeful....

...Section 050 Speech Title: This I Believe: Passion over Pay in the Career Field Introduction: Attention Getter: I believe in choosing a job based on my true passion. “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” The above quote is credited to Confucius, the well-known Chinese legend. I believe many of you would have come across the above quote at one time or the other. Many career coaches often cite this quote at will during career counseling to drive home the view that a person’s career decisions should be based on passion and not pay. Like what he said, I believed that if we were passionate enough about doing what we love, the money would come rolling in. Thesis: Choosing a job based on your passion is important because true passion is more valuable than money and no obstacle will stop you from achieving success. Preview/Transition: For example, I believe Main Point/Example #1: Which is better, love or money? Love is the key to happiness. People say having money is what life is about. I don’t believe that. The true happiness is going after what you love. When I was in high school, I always hoped I could get an honored job such as a talented doctor, a famous lawyer or a skillful engineer, so I could make a lot of money and got rich. However, I grew up and became more mature. Now I believe that true passion is more valuable than money. ..."I think I am/am not an entrepreneur. I am a ... entrepreneur because...” 15/9/201 Introduction In this assignment, I will explain as to why I think I am a lifestyle entrepreneur and the reasons as to why I think I am classified as this type of entrepreneur. I will discuss what a lifestyle entrepreneur is as well as the major motivations that form an integral part of the lifestyle entrepreneur’s choice to follow the specified path. The following motivations of autonomy, family and leisure time, passion and intrinsic reward and satisfaction as well as life quality will be discussed at different stages of my assignment. I will also show how some of these motivations integrate together to form a basis for the lifestyle entrepreneur. What is a lifestyle entrepreneur? As noted by Henderson (2002:49), to support a desired lifestyle or provide a family income is reasons as to why a lifestyle entrepreneur will start a new venture. These entrepreneurs also seek independence and control over their own schedule. Whilst Mottiar (2007:67) argues that a lifestyle entrepreneur is concerned with maintaining income at a level sufficient enough to provide them and their family with adequate funds to allow them to enjoy their chosen lifestyle. As can been seen in the above, lifestyle entrepreneurs aim to make as much money as they require to live and maintain the lifestyle of their choice (Janssen-Selvadurai, 2010:187). Important components to the lifestyle entrepreneur that act as motivating...

...There’s something indescribably gorgeous about how fleeting life is. When I die, I want everyone I love to attend my funeral wearing the brightest and most colorful items in their closet. My cousin Audrey will be wearing her Pocahontas Indian princess outfit of Halloween 1995. My friend Cindy will run around in her furry bear suit and pirate hat. I want my send off to commemorate who I am by retaining every vivid ounce of energy that rushes through my body every time I laugh so hard I can’t breathe. I don’t want to be mourned; I want my end to be a celebration of the life I lived. Passion is what my life is about. As a little girl, every night I was tucked into bed and read a story. Nurtured by a daily dose of literature, I was fascinated with the idea of beautiful princesses and magical creatures and longed for my own Prince Charming to take me away to “happily ever after.” I could not understand what made one book more compelling than another, but I knew that when I read it, I felt it. I didn’t bother myself with the complexities of why I felt the way I did, but now I realize words can be beautiful: from provoking emotions to evoking memories, passionate words can float right off the page, into one’s heart and soul. Words can open people’s eyes by changing their perspective of the world as they know it. I learned about the idea of love from fairy tale romances. I’ve been a hopeless romantic ever since I can remember. When I read The Great Gatsby during the summer before...

...Why Paper #2 In my level 5 story, through recollection of my past experiences, whether it was from my past thoughts of swimming, long drive home, or church experiences, the positive emotions I felt were peace, humility, love, anticipatory, positivity and honor. These emotions are foundational to who I am as a person and shape who I am. These emotions I hold at different levels of who I am. Firstly, within the confines of my passions, I would say that at the base root is love. I love to love others and I love life. That’s the foundation of why I do what I do for anything. I also think that my other passion is peace. I seek peace with others and desire harmony and strength with others and through others. It’s foundational to me and also the reasons why I do what I do. I really desire both peace and love for myself and others because I believe that is why we are created for what we do. Similarly to in “Start With Why”, when it is discussed that people and companies can copy you and do what you do but they cannot emulate what you do exactly because they do not have the reasons why. This is the same in my life where people want to try to seek similar things as me but they aren’t going to do it exactly the way that I do it. For that reason I have been through different experiences and have a passion that is specific to me and who I am. That is not to say that I am better than anyone else, but to suggest that we all go through different experiences. Next are my values and these are...

...Until recently, my experience with books has been lukewarm at best. Reading has always been something I’ve enjoyed, yet it was never something I prioritized. Consequently, I only read what was required for school. This essentially was my relationship with books until my sophomore year of high school when I was influenced by many of my older peers. I witnessed them having the most interesting conversations about various works of literature and science. I was enamored by what they had to say, strove to follow their example. Furthermore, I was privileged enough to have a TAC graduate as one of my instructors, exposing me to a variety of great books that fueled my interest. He also brought the Socratic Method into the classroom which continued...

...I always remember people asking me “what do you want to be when you grow up” and I always said the same thing. A teacher. Then I found my love for special education children, and from there I haven’t stopped loving them. I believe I found my passion thanks to my grandmother, she has worked with special education children for a number of years. I started volunteering at special olympics with her when I was about 11 years old and automatically had a connection with these children. I still try and volunteer with these kids as much as I can and participate in Circle of Friends here at AHS. As my grandma always says “it takes a special heart to work with special people, and you are that special person.” From then on I have found my love and passion...

...the Flammable Skirt” Says About Passion Passion, a force, just like gravity, that cannot be seen but is there and has a huge impact on how we act. However, unlike gravity, it does not weigh us down. Actually, it does quit the opposite, metaphorically speaking. One can argue that passion and the overwhelming emotions that is provokes is what played a major role in the advancements humans have made throughout history. And if someone were to take a look at all of those who have become successful in their endeavors, they would find that what all of these people have in common is the driving force that is passion that somehow allows people to set out on a path to achieve their goals and face all the obstacles along the way. An instance of passion can be seen in Aimee Bender’s “The Girl in the Flammable Skirt,” a short story about a teenage girl’s strained relationship with her sick father. At quick glance the story is basically a collection of random, loosely connected events that also consists of ridiculous characters which might leave some to question its direction and the message it is trying to convey the readers. But if someone were to take a closer look at the story and take note of the symbolism Bender is using then they would be able to see how the story deals with passion and what it has to say about it. And despite the seemingly occurrences that take place in it, the story shows the effect of passion has on people and communicates that passion is a force that drives us and...
