...For students, summer is a time to recollect and enjoy free time amongst friends and family. One does not have to worry about waking up early, tests to be studied for, and stressful occurrences throughout the school year. Summer is the best season because people can do desirable things he or she typically does not have time for; I, for one, enjoy not going to school, traveling across the world, swimming, and going to different band camps. Do not get me wrong, school can be enjoyable, but it can be tremendously stressful. One thing I have learned it that school does not stop even when the worst situations happen in life. If a life has been taken in one’s family or if you have a difficult home life, school does not stop. Thankfully though, summer gives me the opportunity to recollect, find my inner peace, and to simply exit the life of stress and responsibilities temporarily....

...This past summer I was able to volunteer at my high school band camp. At this band camp, I was able to work with brass players and the guard. I mainly helped with improving technique and fix errors in the show's drill. I decided to help out at this band camp for many reasons. The main two reasons I did this was because it was the high school I graduated from and it will better me as a musician. Only a few months ago I was considered a senior at the high school. I shared many memories with these students. I also dedicated five years to this program. I have gain a lot of knowledge over the years about marching band. It was important to me to share what I learned and what I knew to my peers. It is important to me to see this program excel, and...

...modern marching bands are most commonly associated with performing during American football games. Many American universities had bands before the twentieth century typically associated with military ROTC programs. In 1907, breaking from traditional rank and file marching, the first pictorial formation on a football field was produced as a "Block P" created by Paul Spotts Emrick, director of the Purdue All-American Marching Band. Spotts had seen a flock of birds fly in a "V" formation and decided that a band could replicate the action in the form of show formations on a field. The first halftime show at an American football game was performed by the University of Illinois Marching Illini also in 1907 at a game...

...I have been involved with instrumental music for most of my life. I started with private piano lessons in second grade and when third grade came around I joined my elementary school band, picking up the trombone because to my third grade mind it looked easy. This was not the case, especially since my third grade arms couldn’t quite reach as far as they needed to. So after one school year and a marching band camp called the Orange County Lutheran Youth Band where third grade me valiantly marched while playing a trombone through two parades, I switched over to percussion. After practices twice a week and another three weeks of summer band camp, this time carrying the not so small bass drum, I was permanently integrated into the world of percussion. From fourth to eighth grade I improved my skills on instruments such as snare drum, timpani, and glockenspiel, while simultaneously involved in sports such as basketball,...

...When I was an 8th grader, I was blessed to be apart of the high school marching band. I remember back then, band camp used to be all day and we’d stay and eat lunch at the school instead of leaving and coming back. After lunch, Mr. Fisher would play videos of these professional marching bands. They were part of an organization called Drum Corps International. It’s like the NFL for marching band kids. The first show we watched was “Spartacus,” performed by Phantom Regiment. At the end of the show, the drum major is slayed and the rest of the show continues without the drum major. This was a big deal within the marching community. I didn't know it at the time, but by watching that one show, my life would forever be changed. Fast forward to Sophomore year and I made the decision I was going to march the following summer. Granted, my parents hadn’t necessarily said yes to me leaving for 3 months and living on a bus for the entire summer, but they did say I could leave for a weekend and see what it was all about. The first corps I auditioned for was Legends. They’re an open class corps based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Auditions went well; I made friends, got a callback, was able to keep up with all the audition pieces, but something just didn’t feel right. They didn’t feel like home....

...“Detail Atten-hut!” “Creek!” This is something I’ve been shouting for three years now. Marching band is the one place where I can freely shout as loud as I can. I have to. If you are not loud enough, practice will not end until you are. The marching band has been something so incredibly important to my life, I can’t imagine what it will be like when I’m done with college. What am I going to do with myself when I don’t have friends to go see? When I don’t have a horrid and hot two and a half hour practice to attend? Or when I don’t have to wake up and almost cry because my summer is over and a two-week long band boot camp is beginning in an hour? And why the heck am I so upset about not having to undergo this pain again? It is because of the one thing I get hyped about after the practices and soreness is over. The friendships and the love and fun. Even though the season is the same every year, with the same competitions and high schools and the same twenty or so competitors at each one, the people you...

...Band Camp All throughout High School, I had such a hard time fitting into the puzzle everyone calls popularity… I was always a friend group hopper, trying to fit into each crowd. I soon came to realize that everyone I thought was popular was just a fake personality trying to fit in with everyone else. Eventually, I gave up and started sitting on the cold floor in the corner of the cafeteria and wondering what could I have done to fit in with my Jim Carrey like personality. The darker side of Jim Carrey started to come over me and I started to mask my emotions from everyone and began to not care about high school anymore. The friends, grades, and strive to achieve diminished like when you put a cover over a candle. On January 28th,...

...My future professional goals are to attend college, then to start my own business of music education. When I open my music business I will offer private lessons in every instrument that I know or learn, group workshops, ensembles, and concerts to give all of my students the opportunity to learn, work together, and perform while enjoying the experience. I would also be content as an instrumental music teacher in a school; however, I prefer to open my own business. With the help of this scholarship, I believe that I can reach my professional goals. I must pay for college all on my own. My parents paid their own ways through college and they expect me to do the same. I also want to take control of my own finances so that I can effectively manage my own budget and be sure that I am spending my money responsibly. Additionally, as a future local small business owner, I want to learn how to raise money. The government and colleges do not believe that I have financial need because my dad has a good job as an...

...minutes in length. I became a part of band and choir when I was in middle school and was the first chair flute player through all three middle school years, despite challenges from all the other players. I received an award from my band director for my musical talents. I became a part of a middle school show choir in my eighth-grade year called “Cougar First Edition.” We sang and danced for different events around town and rehearsed for three hours once a week. I auditioned for the Varsity Singers as an incoming freshman and made it in with only five other freshmen. Varsity Singers is a competitive show choir that puts in a minimum two three-hour rehearsals weekly. Practices on the weekends could be anywhere from 6-12 hours straight. Weeks right before competitions or performances were often filled with five rehearsals per week for two weeks, taking place every day after school...

...During my high school career, I have had the opportunity to participate in numerous community service and leadership activities. I am currently a member of my school’s National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. Through these organization, I have worked in various projects, which include blood drives, fundraisers, and sporting events. Often times, I was required to assist in the organization in some of these events along with other students. The NHS and NTHS have enabled me to give back directly to my community. Along with being a member of my school’s NHS and NTHS chapters, I also perform in various church bands throughout the year. During the Christmas and Easter seasons, I perform for three churches: the Sebewaing...

...Dear Eagle Scout Board: I began my scouting experience in the Cub scouts, joining Pack 1305 of Canonsburg Pa. While being active in cub scouts (attending most of the meetings and participating in outings), I played several sports; basketball, lacrosse, and football As a Cub Scout, I earned the Arrow of Light award, and I crossed over into Troop 1373 with my best friends. My first campout was to Camp Annawanna, and since then, few campouts have stood out to me as much as that one. The experience confirmed my love for scouting, and I worked hard at campouts and meetings to advance through the scouting ranks. I became a Den Chief for a Pack located not that far from me. I loved the job and the lessons that I was able to teach the younger Cub Scouts, and amazingly, the things I was able to learn from them. As a Scout in Troop 1373, I went to both Camp Annawanna and Heritage Reservation for both Summer camp, and Troop campout. There, also, I worked hard to advance through the Scout ranks and earned merit badges. I have held numerous leadership positions in other organizations while in scouting. At church, I am a team leader for Vacation Bible School for the Photography team, as well as Tech Team leader for our youth group, and numerous other positions. During my school career I have held many positions of leadership in the band, Guidance Department, Sporting events, Clubs, Sports team, and Administration. I have also held through the summer such as Cashier at McDonalds, Crew...

...Olivier Messianen was placed in a concentration camp during WWII. I have always had strong feeling towards the holocaust. The injustice that the Jewish people and countless others had to endure breaks my heart. I listened to Quartet for the End of Time and I mourned for the pain that the Jewish, the Polish, the Gypsies, the homosexuals, the disabled and many others endured. Paulnack comes up with the conclusion that “art is part of survival; art is part of the human spirit, an unquenchable expression of who we are.” I agree 100% with this statement. The people in these camps found console in music, art and in literature as well. I find that I also look to music my darkest moments as well as my happiest moments. Music helps people find a purpose in their life, it gives them initiative to continue. Listening to a certain song or piece can bring back a flood of memories, good and bad. One song can make your remember that summer night with your friends. Another can bring back the memory of a heartbreak. I also listened to Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. I watched the movie a long time ago and I vaguely remember the scene in which this piece was performed. However, the emotions that it gave me where very much the same. Maybe...

...Impacts Life There are a millions of songs, millions of different singers and bands. Based off of each situation, each mood and each day, we choose music. In my life, since I was brought up around country music. Each song had a deeper meaning and since I was 7 years old it helped me make decisions, finish a paper, calm down and fall asleep. A person’s personality and life is based off of many things, from money to their parents to the activities they are in and those they build relationships with. Along with the major factors that shape each person, we have the tinier ones such as the people in our lives, the school we go to, the area we live in and events that occur throughout peoples’ lives. In the old times, people’s lives were based off work but now it is based off of succeeding in their “dream” and encouraging each other. My entire life I have always been told to find a dream and follow it but during the difficult times, people stop saying it. They don’t say anything, so at a very early age we were all introduced to music, the one thing that calms us mentally and physically. Music has become a part of my everyday life. A few songs that have helped me or I’ve always listened to are: God’s Not Dead; Temporary Home; Miles and States; Courageous; I miss you; There Will be a Day; God’s Great Dance Floor; You’ve Got a Friend in Me. Each one of these songs has impacted who I am, what I do, events in my life and decisions I’ve made. Beginning with I miss you by Miley Cyrus. The song...

Without these experiences, good and bad, I would not have been able to grow into the person that I am today. It is through these life lessons that I have learned very important principles for everything from everyday life to personal more situations. I have also been able to have the privilege to be involved in many extracurricular activities that have also strengthened my knowledge. Through these activities I have able to acquire many different important life skills, in everything from public speaking to music comprehension. As a high school senior, I have been required to, in a sense, look back on my high school career as a whole. This process has been very...

..."Set!" As I heard my conducting drum major call out, I quickly stood to attention and took a knee. With my back ever so straight, I held my clarinet a couple of inches from my face, as it was standard procedure. Everyone was quiet and focused. As we waited for our cue on when to begin, we were already mentally counting and calculating where we needed to go and when. We all had our focus points to help us out. Mine was a saxophone player who was directly across from me.as I waited for our conducting drum major to start us off, I made notice of my surroundings. I didn't actually move my body to look around let alone my eyes but with peripherals as we were trained to do. With my peripherals, I noticed the three flute players and the four fellow...
