Border Crime

...Piersall Vincent Portillo Proposal for an Inquiry Paper 4/13/11 Border Crime Background: The blanket topic of border crime has always held a great amount of interest for me. I have done a few other papers on the topics of immigration, and the Mexican drug cartels. Through those papers I have learned a great deal, however I have only ever researched the problems along the Mexican-American border. Through this paper I have started branching my research out to include criminal activities along the other border as the Canadian-American border and the oceanic borders. In addition to already having done some research on one part of this topic, there is another reason that caused me to be interested in this topic as well. This reason was the main event that was the spark that lit the flame of curiosity in me, and it occurred on one of the many trips down into Baja Mexico that my father and I take almost every year. This particular incident took place around two to three years ago in some small Mexican down about some odd two hundred miles down into Baja. Back then I had no real interest in the problems that occurred along our borders any more than what I would see from time to time in the newspapers or on TV. I didn’t really realize that there was a real problem with the Mexican Cartels; I like many Americans was blind to what was going on outside of my own little bubble in my own little town. However after this trip I realized that there were problems in Mexico. My realization...

...shows how I have progressed has a college reader and writer. Before this class I had trouble even understanding how to write a thesis and now I think I can definitely write a college level thesis. I have progressed to know how to incorporate my evidence into my concise and focused thesis statement. For example in the self assessment essay my thesis was, “Due to transferring to many schools over my first two years of college, I feel like I have had the opportunity to build up many habits of mind from Framework for Success in Post-Secondary Writing, especially in flexibility, openness and persistence but still can develop in metacognition and creativity in order to become a more successful college writer.” This showed that I could adapt a thesis to the assignment and it was focused and used my sources. At this point in the semester, a strength I have is the ability to connect source evidence with my thesis. I am able to develop my focused thesis around source-based evidence. For example in the college learning essay I was able to use my interview with my friend who was an elementary teacher to help develop my thesis about how teaching has changed due to technology. I also think another strength I have is organizing my paper in a proper order. In the three essays in this portfolio I organized the essays with a focused thesis, introduction, body paragraphs and an organized conclusion. A challenge I have is using signal phrases to introduce my source-based evidence. I have worked...

Paper on Plagarism

...issues that evolve around plagiarism. Plagiarism as we see it today is clearly an issue of concern as far as why people do it and what can be done to avoid it. Plagiarism is not just an issue but clearly a serious and ongoing problem in the world today that needs to be put under control. According to Evering & Moorman, 2012, “Most public and private schools, colleges, and universities have academic integrity or honor codes and consequences for plagiarism, but few professors and teachers explicitly address what plagiarism means or provide examples of individual contexts and degrees of unauthorized copying”. Plagiarism is considered a serious issue that needs to be re-exam as far as Evering & Moorman are concern because it is said that not many students understand what plagiarism is let along trying to prevent it. Although several schools have honor codes about plagiarism and the penalties you can get, it’s still not a discussion with students about what it is and how to avoid it. The article states that “students are seldom engaged in instruction or discussion about what plagiarism is, why it is a problem, and how it can be avoided” (Evering & Moorman, 2012). Plagiarism continue to be an issue because it is not universally recognized, therefore not everyone see plagiarism as plagiarism. Furthermore, plagiarism is based on property and ownership, meaning the ideas, and words are created by the person who has the rights to ownership (Evering & Moorman, 2012). With...

Childhood Obesity

...Childhood Obesity: Who Do We Blame? Malinda Richardson ENG122 English Competition II Instructor: Daniel Burrello June 4, 2012 Childhood Obesity: Who is to blame? The topic I have chosen for my research paper is Childhood obesity. I chose this topic to become more knowledgeable and able to give my niece some answers to help with her two children. In the last couple of years her daughters have put on a lot of weight, so I want to help and this paper will teach me as I research information. The proper nutrition is needed to maintain healthy weight, especially children. Parents of today have busy, hectic schedules; there is not much time for a healthy meal. The majority of working families’ eat fast food, or buffets. Because of gaming systems and technology, children do not get the proper exercise to help with weight gain. I am hoping I can help my great nieces with their weight before they become one of the made fun of children. I plan on staying on tract with my research and refining childhood obesity down to parents, nutrition and exercise. Everyone wants to blame something or someone, so I am looking to see if parents, nutrition and exercise can have a negative impact on obesity. If parents are not educated enough about the nutritional value of food, how can they teach their children? I will question each and find the best credible information to answer any questions. What I plan to argue whether parents can be blamed for their children’s weight problem. I will also argue...

Islamic Subculture Paper

...The religious subculture I chose to do this paper on is Islam. Islam is one of the largest religions in the world. It is a monotheistic faith based on revelations received by the prophet Muhammad in the 7th-century Saudi Arabia (www.religionfacts.com). Their beliefs about God, the universe, and humanity is the main concern to Muslims. There are over 1 billion Islam followers and they’re known as Muslims. I chose to research about the religion Islam because I am very interested in learning way more about their history. Also I think some of the things they bring to the world are great. I also chose this topic because I know at the end of my research I will learn something different and that will help with my understanding of the religion. This religious subculture came to be a part of American society between 1878 and 1924 when Muslim immigrants from the Middle East arrived in large numbers, settling, in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa and even the Dakotas. They were seeking greater economic opportunity and worked as manual laborers. They are also part of American society because they strive to become more active in American political process and to educate their neighbors about their religion and history....

The Impact Of Astronomical Components In Ancient Greece

...The Emotional Impact of Astronomical Components in Ancient Greece The topic of interest I am proposing is the Astronomical impact on the emotions and characters of ancient Greece. As a student in High School I was always fascinated by the ambiguity of Astronomy. I constantly researched the stars, planets, and matter within space that could give me a better understanding of how space and time itself have formed. Now, as a college student, I have once again taken interest in Astronomical issues. I will use my previous research in the field of Ancient Astronomy to bridge the gap between emotion and the intellect of the stars. With my previous research on the topic I know a great deal about Ancient Astronomy overall. I know the basic...

...turned in by students; I disagree. There is great potential in accessing the millions of megabytes of data available on the World Wide Web, potential that should not be overlooked. It is incumbent on the educators today to guide their students in the best way to harness the material they find on the internet. “Most of the data my students Net is like trash fish,” says Judith Levine in her article I Surf, Therefore I Am, “and it is hard for them to tell a dead one-legged crab from a healthy sea bass.”(Levine, p.223) I hear her frustration with students who feel that using the information on the computer is the way to an easy passing grade. However, I also can see where a little guidance from her will go a long way toward helping these students sort through and discover the pieces of information that will help them. Students look to their teachers to guide them. Many schools and teachers have not realized that there is a variety of ways students can access information over the internet. According to a study conducted by the American Institutes for research, “Students report that there is a substantial disconnect between how they use the Internet for school and how they use the Internet during the school day and under teacher direction.” (Levine and Arafeh, p. ii) There is no doubt that the students encountered by Ms. Levine and her contemporaries will continue to turn in sub-standard work without guidance from them on what is a quality piece of research and what is a “dog”...

Literacy Narrative: Biomedical Engineering Class

... As a child, I always wanted to become a doctor. “What kind of doctor” was the question I asked myself? I was about to start my senior year of high school, but still asked myself the same question. However, senior year in my Biomedical Engineering class I was told each week I had to research an article that was somehow related to the class. I had to read the research/article thoroughly, write a three to four page research paper and present my findings in front of the class. At first I wasn’t so eager about the assignment, because not only I hate writing but also reading. However by doing these research papers helped me shape my career aspiration and also helped prepare me for college level research papers. The first article I read that grabbed my attention was “Thoughts Control Robotic Hands”. The article talked about how a group of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have implanted an array of electrodes into the motor cortex of a patient’s brain enabling...

Families

...Response Paper # 2 Many families who are living in the United States today have come here because they wanted to be in a country where they can have a safer and stable life. Through all the good and bad that many cultures have faced, as they have come into the United States, they have seen better improvement in their positionality. My family went through a major cultural change when they moved to Los Angeles in 1989. The main reason why they moved to Los Angeles was the fact that the Soviet Union was in control of Armenia, which made their lives even harder by not having a say in many things and no independence. They were living in a household with about eight people and it was just so hard to find any kind of stable job to maintain a family. Many of my father’s cousins were moving to Los Angeles at the time and they would all tell him that it was the place of opportunities and that living in the United States would make life easier. My family moved to Hollywood, Ca in 1989 because during this time all of our family members were living in this city and we all wanted to live near each other, thus Hollywood became our segregated cultural space. I am so privileged that my family decided to move to California many years ago because I have many cousins in Armenia who are living a hard life in Armenia, since there is no work. On Armenian channel, I always see many poor people who live in broken down homes and when I look back at the life I am living today, I couldn’t be any more...

Vietnam War Research Project

...Vietnam War Research Paper and Project Your Mission: You are to choose a topic of interest on the Vietnam War. There are many topics for you to choose from and I have provided a list for you if you need help. You must get the topic approved by me! Second: Once you have your topic try to narrow it down. You don’t want to have such a broad topic that you are swimming with information. To help you with this you must have a clear and concise thesis that either shows the importance of your topic or takes a stand on your topic. For example if my topic was the cause of the war my thesis would be: The essential cause of the Vietnam War was the instability of government relations between the North and South Vietnamese. Third: You are to write a 5-7 page research paper focused around your thesis statement and providing evidence to back up your thesis statement. You are to use MLA format and follow the guidelines for formatting your paper. Attached is a rubric that will assess your paper. You are to ATTACH the rubric to your final paper for evaluation Fourth: You will teach the class what you have learned about your topic. Your presentation will be evaluated according to a separate rubric that you will receive before you begin planning your lesson. You have an obligation to your classmates to be attentive. Sales/Marketing Director

...the work I have done in this class. At the beginning of this course, I felt I was pretty set in my beliefs. I have read what I needed to read to support my own ideas. By taking this class I am able to read information on views which are conflicting to mine and not be biased. I was able to read posts from classmates which were contradictory to my own and see the points they were trying to make. One example of where I feel my critical reading skills were improving was in reading the posts in Unit 6 which the discussion was about affirmative action. I have long had certain beliefs about this subject which were not for it at all. In reading in the text, I found the two words, reverse discrimination, which I felt would justify my stance. I have pretty much viewed this subject with blinders on since I first heard about it. After reading the posts by classmates and paying attention to what they had to say about it; my views shifted away from being biased towards affirmative action. I was able to read what they had posted and get a better understanding about the pros for affirmative action. Even though the group consensus for Unit 6 Case Study Issue B- Contemporary Discrimination was that Katie Sampson has the right to have the regents hear her proposal to have racial gender indicators eliminated from the admission policy; I was able to get a different point of view from those in our group who supported affirmative action. From carefully reading their postings, I could see...
