...PERSUASIVE SPEECH Topic: Vegetarianism [INTRODUCTION] Attention getter: I’d like to start off my speech with the words of George Bernard Shaw: "Animals are my friends and I don't eat my friends." Purpose and Thesis: As you may have guessed, today I’ll try to persuade you all to consider thinking about being vegetarian. Enumerated Preview: Vegetarianism used to be an unusual lifestyle choice. Today it is becoming more common and accepted by mainstream society. While there are many reasons for choosing a vegetarian diet, I’ll tell you the most important ones. Throughout the course of this presentation, we will see the personal health advantages of becoming a vegetarian, our ability to prevent animal cruelty, and the benefits to the environment and the world. Impact of the Topic and Speech: I hope that my speech will give you some thoughts to think and questions to ask. So if you have any, you may ask them after my talk. Transition: First, let’s examine the health benefits of becoming a vegetarian [BODY] I. Becoming a vegetarian has substantial health benefits. HEART DISEASE RISK Vegetarians have a lower chance of developing heart disease than meat-eaters, according to a study published in the journal "Public Health Nutrition." This large-scale study was undertaken by researchers of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in Oxford, England, and studied a total of 76,172 women and men living in the United Kingdom, United States and Germany. Overall, vegetarians were...

...Meat vs Vegetarian: the War of Strong Opinions The question whether the views of people with strong but scientifically unsupported opinions should be given prominence equal to those with compelling scientific evidence in the decades-long battle of ‘conclusive evidence’ between the Meat and the Veg camp, seems to have surfaced again in the debate. On one hand, there is always a moral choice camp for whom vegetarianism and veganism are choices of non-violence towards animals. PETA is the biggest advocate for moral vegetarianism and much alike other followers of this principle, is not too much concerned with the ultimate healthiness of the food choice, as long as it does not involve killings. “Soy sausages and “Fib Ribs to Tofurky jerky and mock lobster” that PETA is citing as its meat alternatives, do not sound too ingredient-friendly. On the other hand, people choosing vegetarian or meat diet for its health-related advantages are faced with dire straits of scientific burden of proof because health is a long-term domain of high science. ‘Compelling scientific evidence’ appears to be a strong word sequence with almost magical powers, practically an idiom, but, of course, it has to be handled carefully. In many examples of bad or ‘yellow’ journalism, the phrase “British [American, sometimes on gets Chinese for exoticism] scientists have discovered” often validates, or at least serves as modality qualifier for the stories with unchecked or altogether invented facts.’...

...farms. Thesis Statement: The government should ban factory farms and require the meat industry to raise animals in their natural environments. The process of preparing the project: I start with information finding in week 3 by referring to youtube suggested by the lecturer. Then I choose a topic: Factory Farming. I prepare the script for the speech by referring to a few website that I got from google search. I narrow down the main ideas that I want to include in my topic: 1) disadvantages/ danger of factory farming; 2) suggestion to replace factory farming; 3) action that need to be done. Apart from that, I prepare the material supporting my presentation that include the visual for factory harming so that audience can give full attention to the topic, arouse their interest to know more and continue listening to my speech. The Script guideline: I. Attention: Close your eyes and step into the world of an individual. You are born into a world where nights and days are never constant (attention getter). You are fed three to five times a day, but no one is there to nurture you. Not even the numerous others crammed into your living space. You grow frantic, scared, and sickly. Now open your eyes, to reality. What I have just described is one of America’s worst ghettos. You know this individual who is trapped in this environment. He is your breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is the meat you eat. Today’s farms not only abuse their animals they also produce harmful diseases...

...of Animals Summary: Of all the agricultural land in the US, 87% is used to raise animals for food. These animals are fed more than 80 percent of the corn and 95 percent of the oats the US produces. Meat animals of the world alone consume food equal to caloric needs of 9 billion people- more than the entire human population on earth. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat. A vegetarian food will make ten times as many humans happier than a non-vegetarian one, not counting the happiness gained by animals. Meat eating results in a lot of wastage of food that would otherwise have fed many more people. Ethical Issues Analysis I believe in the ethical treatment for all animals are an ethical obligation by all humans. We have come to an era that we believe that all humans should be treated equally and fairly. Well, what about our other living, breathing counterparts? They deserve to live their life as they choose in quality and in the pursuit of happiness. Just as Europeans came and took over Northern America's land and resources on the Indians. We have also taken over the land and resources from all of the animals. The moral point of view in the killing of animals for food as an indulgence which is not a necessity for our diet is killing another living being. Eating large amount of meat without any vegetarian choice causes constipation, obesity and cancer. The consequences of not eating meat would be healthy...

...10/22/15 Families over the years have been evolving because of the need for money and other necessities. Now in days it is common to see a women with a job compared to how it was back then. It is also becoming more common for the kids and the fathers in households to be cleaning also, instead of it usually being the mom. However, in English class when we took a gender roles survey, it indicated that 11 out of 15 people’s families were more traditional than modern. Having taken the survey myself, it was clear that my family is more traditional than modern because time. My dad, brother, and I are still the ones who do all the yard work while my mom and my sisters stay inside the house and do all the house cleaning. (Fig.1 shows that the majority of the class had more traditional families than modern families) Primarily, my family is more traditional because the cleaning is done by the woman during barbeques while my dad, brother, and I are outside grilling. For example, most of the time when it comes to cleaning up the house the women are the ones who do most of the cleaning on the inside. They also make sure that the house is cleaned well and go back after cleaning it to make sure they didn’t miss anything that was supposed to be cleaned. In addition, the men are the ones in charge of doing all the yard work outside and are also in charge of starting the grill when it is time to cook. My dad, brother, and I are the ones that who are also in also in charge of watching...

...understand our faith and do not wish to look past our faults. Beyond any of this, it’s our job to live in harmony with nature and learn from it. By reading and understanding the word of God, it’s clear that He expects us to be caretakers of his creation. In addition, He expects us to appreciate and protect all animals and the environment. To fulfill this mission doesn’t require perfection, but an honest heart and effort will get the job done. As a Christian, in an attempt to preserve or restore our environment, we should do the following: plant and eat from trees, eat less or no meats, and dispose of human wastes more properly. Planting and Eating from trees. In the bible Leviticus 19:23, New Living Translation, reads “When you enter the land and plant fruit trees, leave the fruit unharvested for the first three years and consider it forbidden. Do not eat it”. This is a very direct scripture. From my understanding, God’s telling us to labor in our gardens and once our fruits or vegetables have matured, then we may take from them. As an example, the Weekend Gardner Monthly Web Magazine for March 2012 (http://weekendgardener.net) gives us great tips on harvesting apples, pears, tomatoes, etc. By reading this article, I learned that a great indication of an...

...“Steers 80% Choice” and “Hog Primal Butt” prices are the items I tracked from February through April, 2017. Every price was recorded on the first Monday for the last ten weeks. Prices were found on the USDA National Daily Hog and Pork Summary (https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/lsddhps.pdf ) and the 5 Area Daily Weighted Average Direct Slaughter Cattle (https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/lm_ct100.txt). Part way through this project, I realize that I did not pick a live animal and a meat product that is related. I chose the Hog Primal Butt because it a better roast that can be cooked slow and low, which can turn out very flavorful. The best pulled pork is made from the Boston Butt because of its fat content which contributes to flavor. It is marbled with fat and also contains a lot of connective tissues. The Primal Butt is also a meat product that is very inexpensive, leaving it affordable for families to buy. Steers 80% Choice is a Live FOB Basis. These are steers that are ranking in the highest category of Choice. I chose these items because my family has been in the hog business for almost 20 years. Annually, we finish out around 3,000 head of hogs a year. My family is in a...

References…………………………………………………………..pg 5 Executive Summary Maria's kosher products are an independently owned company. The central core of our business is the production of kosher meats and humus. Our company's major target market is the southern Jewish and Arabic community. Our focus is on making bulk and individual sales within the market, and the utilization of direct marketing where we go to consumers’ homes and jobs, it provides immediate attention to the consumer this should bring in sales from 2.5 percent to about 20 percent. Our company would utilize this because most men and women work outside their homes and majority of the time are not available throughout the day. We can use this to our advantage by sponsoring parties at the workplace or even at their homes. These types of sales save time and also ensure a great relationship and trust with your customers. I would have a good chance of reaching that market by showing how versatile our product is and by attracting a new customer base. We will ensure that our product is efficient and economical. Our production team must take into account a series of processes including purchasing, receiving, quality control, shipping, research and development, maintenance...

...Positive Effects of Vegetarianism Vegetarianism is becoming ever more popular around the world. People are choosing vegetarian diets over other diets in hope of living a healthier lifestyle. Matthew B. Ruby defines vegetarianism as, “The practice of abstaining from eating meat.” According to recent polls, Ruby indicates, “approximately 8% of Canadians, 9% of Germans, 40% in India, and 3% of the United States identify themselves as vegetarians.” Vegetarians can be separated into four distinct groups. The first is lacto-ovo vegetarians, also known as partial vegetarians. They exclude red meat, fish, and poultry from their diets, but still eat dairy products and eggs. The second is lacto vegetarians which exclude red meat, fish, poultry, and eggs but still include dairy products. The third group is pescetarians. This group avoids red meat and poultry, but eats fish. The last group is vegans and they have the strictest diet as they avoid eating all animal products including red meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. There are several reasons why people become vegetarian. Amita Handa expresses that people become vegetarians because “social reasons, political and religious beliefs, and financial problems.” Another notable reason people switch from nonvegetarian is because of their frustration with the cruel and unusual treatment of animals. Vegetarianism is mostly linked with positive effects on physical health as evidenced by lower body mass index, lower blood pressure, and...

...Mexican Grill An honors thesis presented to the Department of Accounting, University at Albany, State University of New York in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation from The Honors College. Cara N. Veneziano Research Advisor: Raymond K. Van Ness, Ph.D. May, 2013 Abstract The purpose of this study is to assess the consequences of offering healthy menus versus providing historically popular fast foods. Healthier foods are better for society and being able to understand how serving healthier menus will impact the financial performance of a company is crucial. I focus my attention on Chipotle Mexican Grill since it has been making a concerted effort to provide healthier foods. I have selected McDonald’s Corporation as a benchmark comparison. My specific investigative question is: Does a healthier menu translate into greater profits. My study begins with a comparison of Chipotle and McDonald’s meal options and ingredients in order to assess the overall health of their menus. This comparison revealed that Chipotle clearly had a healthier menu. Succeeding the menu comparisons, a financial analysis was performed on Chipotle and McDonald’s. The results of this study found that Chipotle, the healthier company, performed better in terms of Share Price, Stock Volatility, and Liquidity. The findings indicate that McDonald’s, the unhealthier firm, performed better in the areas of market capitalization, Return on Equity, Return on Assets, Return...

...had the exact same qualities as the black breed (Thorpe). They started to use the Red Angus for breeding the cows to be more stable. The Red Angus continues to crossbreed with other cows to make hybrids. A few examples are Balancer Red Angus mixed with Gelbvieh, LimFlex, Red Angus plus Limousin, and SimAngus Red Angus mixed with Simmental (Thorpe). No one will be surprised when the Red Angus will be one of the top best cattle breed for beef. It is remarkable how something infamous can be given a second chance for redemption (Thorpe). This also shows that never give up even though there might not be a chance you keep on fighting (Thorpe). It turns out the Red Angus is a very calm breed, very easy to manage, maintain and raise (Thorpe). As years went by the problem for the Red Angus disappeared. In 1994 the breed officially became one of the most familiar breeds for beef (Thorpe). Facts about Cows There is about 100 million cattle in the U.S. Cows have two main purposes, they are for milk and beef. The cows that are used for milking, their bodies are shaped differently than beef cows. In a herd of cows, they all look the same, there is actually quite a difference (Pukite). Beef cows have a rectangular shaped body and have more muscle and are more broad. Milk cows have more of a wedge-shaped body and are fatter (Pukite). Environment is also important for cows. Beef cows tend to graze in wide open range land; dairy cows that produce milk are fenced-in closer together (Pukite). Cows...

...beginning part of my career in the Navy we were taught that when it comes to our yearly evaluations that are superiors would take care of. Then as time passed and I noticed that if I was going to advance further in the Navy something would have to change. The learning and insight that Chief Petty Officer Burgwin taught me about the process was truly impactful. His actions allowed me to reexamine what I was doing before I checked onboard the US Pearl Harbor and what I needed to change to succeed. In the US Navy, the advancement process is made up of three parts; Your score on the advancement exam, how many awards you receive, and finally your evaluation score. We receive an evaluation based on different traits that the Navy feels we...
